  • Spring and Fall are two of the best times of the year to catch giant smallmouth bass. In this detailed video host Colin McKeown discusses the key fly patterns, presentations and fly lines to use for success in early season (after ice-out) smallmouth bass fishing. Colin is fishing public waters around Birch Lake Resort which is just over an hour from the US border in Algoma Country. To learn more, go to: birchlakeresor...

I always learn so much watching Colin. Last spring my lake here in NS has a bass over 24' new to a big spruce tree that fell in. I always wonder where she goes in the summer My secret lake in Hammonds Plains!

What type of fly line are you using to get that fly so close to the bottom? Floating or sinking?

Max, I used a combination of lines to get the flies down to where the bass were. My number one line was an intermediate (1.5 to 2" IPS) to get smelt and streamer patterns down in the water column or even near bottom (4-8 feet). I also used a sink tip line (3-5 IPS) with a 15 foot sinktip, that seemed to help. Since doing that show, discovered a very versatile line for this time of year often referred to as a "ghost tip". It is essentially an intermediate sinktip attached to a floating line. Was perfect for shallow water bass and fish up to 8 feet deep. Several companies make this type of line, let me know if you need recommendations. Have fun catching big smallmouth!
