This is the repair that Z owners have nightmares about doing. Thankfully, I never needed to do it. Kudos to you for taking it on.

I have an 88 I got recently and my heater core seems to be bypassed and the inlets in the firewall look boogered up with silicone. This looks like quite the job but seeing it more in detail I’m hoping the heater core is fine and can maybe get away with replacing the parts going through the firewall; but seems I’ll have to do the large majority down here. Winters rolling in faster than I have available wrench time. Fun. Video was very insightful - thanks for making this. There isn’t too much (in-depth) z31 content I’ve found so far.

Can’t thank you enough for this video. I have a 1984 300ZX Anniversary Edition with a bad heater core. Thankfully, I purchased the replacement part years ago. But, after seeing your video I realize the monumental task of replacing it. I found a garage that is willing to take it on, but I hope they will take their time, because it appears a lot of things could go wrong in removing the old infrastructure & part. Maybe I should attempt this myself to insure it is handled with care. Unless you would like to do another one? ... lol😆

I’m sorry for the late response, but I do appreciate your comment. I hope you have gotten yours sorted out. I would take it on for you, but it looks like there’s a couple thousand miles between us!

Did this a couple of years ago I took a lot of pictures. I would recommend labeling the electrical connectors

Ha! Not doing that. Nope. Hell nah. Fuck no. My heater core stays as it is. Thank you for the vid! 😂

how long did this project take you? about a day?

Had I been able to work on it non stop, it could have been done in a day. I spent some time in a the afternoons between work and kids extracurriculars, so it drug on. I would set a couple of days back just to be safe.

thank you so much for this!!! i had been looking for a tutorial about 6 months ago and couldnt find a good one to save my life. i cant drive my z because any coolant i put in just leaks out from the heater core and im simply not mechanically inclined enough yet to figure out a replacement myself. does the 2+2 or auto trans matter for this repair because i have a 2+0 5 speed?

Thanks for checking the video out, I’m glad I could help! The 5 speed 2 seater makes no difference. Good luck and be patient with it!

Have ya tried to bypass the heater core by attaching the 2 heater hoses going to and from the heater?

Could always bypass it if need be. You just won't have heat in the cabin

Where did you get that replacement?

The owner had purchased it before hand. I’m not entirely sure.

So really what the point of this video is, dissuading people from buying a 300ZX with a bad core. Like the one I see now on Facebook in Massachusetts that is exactly like my ex-wife's car. A low mileage beauty in gold with T-Tops. She wants, $18,000!
