    Definitely prefer ETFs for lack of fees and active management

      Are ETF's not passively managed or at the least the majority? That's why they get lower fees while mutual funds are actively managed. Also does it concern you at all that ETF's don't actually hold the underlying stocks? Cheers.

    *GREAT VIDEO BRANDON* | My preference is DEFINITELY to utilize ETF’s that track the market such as the S&P500 as well as utilize individual dividend stocks. I plan on talking about more investing topics on my own channel in the near future. This was a great video Brandon! Keep up the good work! 😎👍🏻

    Thank you for such an informative video! I talked with my financial planner today and he pretty much said something similar when I asked him about which I should choose between the two. Given my circumstances he recommended that I invest into mutual funds for now. Keep up the good work! I look forward to learning more about investing through your channel!

    Brandon... There are 'passive' and 'actively managed' examples for both ETFs and Mutual Funds. When ETFs first came out, they were all passive, but actively managed ETFs started in 2008 and now easily found. The largest actively managed ETF is MINT (PIMCO Enhanced Short Maturity Active Exchange-Traded Fund).
    Conversely, there's plenty of passive mutual funds as well. VFIAX (Vanguard 500 Index Fund) is the largest if I'm not mistaken.
    Maybe I understood something in your video, but I don't think so.

    • @beaviswealth
      @beaviswealth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are very correct, Scott! The industry is evolving like crazy... smartBeta, passive+ management, you name it (everyone’s got their own hybrid versions nowadays Haha). This vid was meant to differentiate for beginners how the products were set out to be to help them understand. But ya.. times are changing!

    Sure, if you could find a mutual fund that outpaces the S&P 500 ETF then yeah the mutual fund would be a better choice. The problem with that is only about 4% of mutual funds can out pays the S&P in a year however most of them over a 10 year span do worse. So your odds of finding a good mutual fund that would give you a better returns is to little to none. Low cost ETF That follows the S&P 500 all the way!!!🎉🎉🎉

  • @jorgegabrielsiqueira

    Nice video! I would say that if you are new, just starting at investments world, it is a good idea to start with mutual funds until you learn the basics to start managing more proactively your portfolio. When you feel more confident, you can transition to ETFs. When you feel more confortable again, you can transition to stocks.
    And you don't necessarily need to sell to transition, you can keep all of them, in a way that make sense for you.

    Brandon, thanks for all of your helpful videos, I have learned so much from you and look forward to your new posts! If you have the chance, can you talk about the practice of 'Norbert's Gambit', particularly through Questrade... is it worth it for Canadians who are interested in buying U.S. ETFs or Stocks but want to reduce the built-in exchange fee? Is it worth paying Questrade's markup, or should I just buy with Canadian Cash and pay for the conversion? Should beginners like myself even bother with the whole DLR.TO "journal-over" headache?? Thanks again.

    hey friends! quick question from a beginner - if you sell your stocks, ETFs, etc from your RRSP, does that affect your contribution room or anything? or is it only if you withdraw it from the RRSP account into your chequing account?
    also, sorry if this has been answered before in other videos - I've been looking around everywhere but I cant find the answer ☹

    I dont know much about Canada but 50% of US mutual funds have outperformed S&P500 in the last 10 years.
    Not outperforming the benchmark doesn't mean they're not profitable. An MTF not outperforming the benchmark can still be more profitable than some ETF.
    That chart of 80% didnt compare ETFs performance for same period(poor). Those were covid times and mainly affecting Canadian small companies MTFs(agreesive/risky type).
    Good investment return doesn't gel well with the paasive and cheap approach. Those who make good return are paying for broker advice that helps them select MTFs that beat the benchmark 100% of the time(these include US and international MTFs).
    The correct way to invest in MTFs:
    1) Pay for selecting performing MTFs.
    2) Pay MER for those MTFs
    Most people do it backwards:
    2) Pay MER for MTFs
    1) Not paying for selecting the right MTFs

    • @beaviswealth
      @beaviswealth  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi SailedShip. Totally agree with your second/third sentences. Can't agree with your '80%' comment, because this video was posted back in 2019, before Covid was even a thing. I'm not aware of any MTF that beats the benchmark 100% of the time, but if you've got one or two, that's awesome research. Keep it up. - Marc
