    I had Pete Parada, drummer for The Offspring, come to the studio to help me figure out how many calories we burn when playing the drums. Pete is the current touring drummer for the punk band The Offspring. About a year ago I had a fit-bit type of watch that keeps track of your physical activity in steps, movements, miles, etc.
    One day at band practice I decided to bring it in and where it throughout the entire practice for fun, and by the end of the 3-hour session it told me I “played drums” for 10.9 miles.
    I love the Offspring, great video man, keep it up.

    Playing drums 120 min. 6 nights a week for 10 yrs in a metal band is probably the most brutal workout ! What calories ?

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NICK MENZA I would have to agree with you man. That's a brutal schedule and style to shed every night. What was your average song bpm for the set?

    • @NickMenzaofficial
      @NickMenzaofficial 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nothing below 120bpm yeah . I'm remembering how effortless it was at 23. Now at 5l lol . Getting old really sux ! Heavy drumming is like playing football. There is a small window in your life where your body can take it.. . Drumming is a sport !

      ***** would you ever consider doing other percussion instruments tutorial? preferably bells. if not maybe zoom in on the snare drum specifically and do lessons based only upon that like in a drum line. love the vids, you deserve more likes and subs than u have!

    So awesome that had pete in a video! He's one of favorite drummers too, I just love how intense he gets behind the kit and also how simple of a layout he has. He's such an underrated drummer to everyone, I wish more people would give him props for his work.

    when i was eighteen i weighed around 220 pounds. Then me and my friends started an extreme metal band and since we were a bunch of burnouts we had nothing else to do so we practiced three nights a week for three hours a night or so. Within a year i had dropped 50 pounds.

    BPM don't matter. It's not the same as a heart rate, it's just a song tempo. I can either play 150 BPM using mostly wrist and double-stroke rolls without moving my body at all, or I can fix my body and swing my arms around like a mad man with single-strokes. You can play a tempo at half-time on the hat/ride, or double with two hands.
    This calculation is flawed simply for the fact that you are relying on song tempo to calculate calories.

    This is such a bizarre coincidence not only because of this. I was actually watching one of the lasts songs The offspring was performing at a show, It seemed that this guy was really tired. So I wondered "Damn, this dude looks tired af", So I googled "burn caloried drumming" or something like that and this was the first video I found.

  • @AdrianTheDrummer
    @AdrianTheDrummer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Stephen, how did you calculate his heart rate during performances? Did you just use the bpm of the songs? Thats the impression I am under but that cant be accurate...

    @7:00 Pete mentions arms tightening up. I believe that's due to lactic acid buildup. Would compression sleeves help prevent that buildup?

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Juha Ruotsalainen No, compression sleeves wouldn't help. Doing a light warm up with some light stretching would flush any left over lactic acid out of the muscles and loosen them back up.

    • @feax
      @feax 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would light massage with your fingers over a soft cloth loosen up the muscle?

    In that case, how many calories does one burn while practicing?

    • @highestsettings
      @highestsettings 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harrison Myers Depends on how much effort and time you put into it really doesn't it?
      If you're playing the same things as you would whilst playing a gig, with as much energy and enthusiasm for the same amount of time. Then you'd burn exactly the same amount of calories.

    • @miang58
      @miang58 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harrison Myers It varies if you do heavy fast drumming then you burn quite a bit. It's like jogging, like they say you can go different speeds

    • @TylerHNothing
      @TylerHNothing 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harrison Myers if i play a really intense 30 minute gig, comparing it to what my calories burned are during a workout, I'd say I could burn 200-400 calories based on how I felt after and how much sweat is all over my body. I've played a show for an hour and a half between two bands, and I'd say I burned maybe 700-1000, I was absolutely leveled, sweat coated, and exhausted. If I work out on an elliptical machine, it'll say I burn 1000 in an hr on average going 7 mph and I'll do this every other day, and when I play the drums I'm playing really intense music and I like to put in the body language and get into it but it's not as intense as my 7 mph running. This kinda lines up with what they're saying in the video

  • @einarabelc5

    Is that why drummers end with heart problems? Sorry if it sounds alarming. I've seen and heard a couple of stories.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This would actually fight AGAINST heart problems. The heart is a muscle...so the more we work it (get our heart rate high) the bigger that muscle gets. You will find your resting heart rate goes down the more cardio (or high intensity drumming) you do. This is due to the heart becoming more efficient from being in better shape.
      Now, if you are out of shape, ever weight, have an extremely unhealthy diet, history of heart disease in your family, have a high fat/high sugar diet, smoke, or partake in other recreational drugs...then yes, amping your heart rate up would lead to complications. But for the normal healthy individual, getting your heart rate up on a regular basis is a great thing.

  • @brian96597
    @brian96597 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Eh, soccer players couldn't sit down and play a 2 hour set much like drummers couldn't run up and down a field for two periods. Even if cardio is good the muscle groups used between the two are different.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely...never intended to say they weren't different. But just because the muscle groups are different doesn't mean the calorie burn is different. A calorie is a calorie and they burn the same way. That was the point we were trying to make.

    • @brian96597
      @brian96597 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But would the burn rates be the same since the muscle groups running sports engage are larger muscles?

  • @JMIKE_JMIKE_
    @JMIKE_JMIKE_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m sorry drumming is not a good way to lose weight just like running you need to burn fat and you need to target the areas that have the fat and build muscle thus working out drumming just can’t do that. Sports such as baseball basketball soccer football hokey those are athletes they need to workout drummers don’t so no I don’t agree that your friend is in better shape than soccer players because cardio burns fat but your not building muscle so you’ll just look like them cross country runners super thin most drummers are and a lot are fat even heavy metal drummers. It’s kinda funny how drummers think there in shape if your going to be drumming you don’t need to do cardio but you still need to build muscle so the gym is the best place to get fit drumming just isnt I don’t care how rigorous the drumming is it’s just not something you should be looking to do to be fit.
