I met Jay in person while working as a standby firefighter on a set in 1958 near Saugus, He was a very pleasant person and also a very good actor. RIP Jay Silverheels!
Same for me. He was...in my opinion....an absolutely integral part of the success of The Lone Ranger, but was probably not paid accordingly. Just as an aside: Did you hear about the time The Lone Ranger and Tonto were surrounded by hostile Indians and it really looked like the end for them? The Lone Ranger turned to Tonto and said, "What should we do now Tonto?" and Tonto replied, "Who's WE, white man?"
A friend of mine saw Jay at a restaurant in California. My friend said hi to him. And Jay asked him how he was doing. And he said getting ready to go to Nam. And Jay asked him to set down and talk with him and his wife. That a great man.
WHAT THE SHAME IS.THEY NEVER LET HIS TALENT FULLY GROW AS A ACTOR.SHORT CHEATED HIM ON MONEY.HE WAS A VERY TALENTED PERSON.HE WOULD OF DONE REALLY GOOD FOR THE NATIVE AMERICANS.
Forgot one other role he played in Battle Star Galactica 1980 miniseries, when they decided to start a colony on earth… he played a Hispanic farmer who was looked down upon by a wealthy landowner.
Ed Ames played the Indian "Mingo" on the Daniel Boone show. Another fine program of that era. Ed is still with us as of this date. A great singer also .
Thanks for this information about Jay Silverheels. As a kid I watched The Lone Ranger and Tonto was my favorite character. I liked the quality of his voice. It's nice to know a bit about the man behind the character. It sounds like he had a oretty good life. 😎👍
My maternal grandmother was a Seneca who grew up on a reservation in Upstate NY. We were very proud watching the Lone Ranger on t.v. and Tonto was our favorite character on that show. Tonto was a unfortunate name however and I won’t mention what it means in Spanish.
I read somewhere that when he got his Hollywood star that he cried. I found that endearing since I have a pretty strong dislike for people that have no sense of gratitude.
We cannot measure our past actions using modern yardsticks. We have to assure that justice and equality are in our future. God bless you Jay. As a kid you were more my idle than the Lone Ranger because I related to you. RIP.

The narration of this video presentation can put the viewer to sleep. There is a noticeable vocal hesitation and a lack of vocal inflection emanating from the narrator's voice. There should have been more practice put into reading the script before "attaching it" to the video itself. Also, I am curious as to why there wasn't a reference made in how the Lone Ranger and Tonto became friends. In this video there was a short reference to the Lone Ranger being the lone survivor of a massacre of (Texas) Rangers, but what was Tonto's role in how their relationship formed/evolved? Lastly, this whole idea of an individual's "sad ending" is a misleading and ludicrous comment. Everyone passes. Jay Silverheels had a full life. Of course it's sad when we learn of somebody's passing, but why do these types of TH-cam videos always state the OBVIOUS?! It is a "cheap come-on!" There is no need to constantly incorporate the word "sad" into biographical sketches. It's redundant, and it's reality!
HE WAS A GREAT ACTOR BUT NEVER TAKEN OUT TO PUSH HIM TO HIS FULLEST POTENTIAL... HE COULD HAVE BEEN EVEN GREATER ... AS FOR THE VOICE DOING THE VOICE OVER ON THIS VIDEO... IT IS SLOW, BORING, AND TO MONOTONE ! LACK OF ENTHUSIASM... I HAVE HEAR VOICE EXPLAINING COLONOSCOPIES THAT HAD MORE EXCITEMENT...
This video serves as a well-deserved tribute to the professional career and life of Jay Silverheels. Unfortunately, you extract that nugget of information to...imply the narrator/Hollywood was "racist" as the noun is construed today? As one poster earlier noted, "We cannot measure our past actions using modern yardsticks." I ponder how you live without finding fault and a sinister motive by everyone to denigrate their (culture, ethnicity, etc.) Do you evaluate every aspect of culture in the absence of "context." He was so handsome & I loved his voice.
He was a great actor and human being

Thank you for that comment l I really appreciate it. I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am.
What an injustice. He didn't earn much money in all his years in Hollywood.
Nope..the small hats just used him and disposed of him, like they do everybody else.
Yet he was good,
LOVED THIS MAN!

You're here, so that makes you an accessory. I'm calling the cops.

Tonto is Spanish for "fool".
