Sounds like a great plan. What reading order are you doing for Vorkosigan? There are several out there and all seem to be hotly debated.

      THE WARRIOR’S APPRENTICE
      THE VOR GAME
      CETAGANDA
      BROTHERS IN ARMS
      BORDERS OF INFINITY
      MIRROR DANCE
      MEMORY
      KOMARR
      A CIVIL CAMPAIGN
      FALLING FREE
      ETHAN OF ATHOS
      WINTERFAIR GIFTS (SHORT STORY)
      DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY
      CAPTAIN VORPATRIL’S ALLIANCE
      THE FLOWERS OF VASHNOI (NOVELLA)
      CRYOBURN

R Scott Bakker and Ada Palmer, my 2 favorite authors. Always get nervous when people give Bakker a chance cause most times they end up not liking it very much but you don't have to agree with everything an author is saying, sometimes you can just appreciate the good writing :)

    • @jakebishop7822
      @jakebishop7822  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think that's what i'm hoping for. I do think often writers view of humanity leaks into people's enjoyment of the characters, and story just based on feeling more or less real, so I would say it would surprise me if Bakker was an all time favorite, but also I have heard such good things in terms of quality that my expectations are still quite high.
I have no such reservations about Palmer.

For Crime and Punishment, make sure you've got the Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky translation. The old translation that was the main English one for like 100 years is really hard to read for no reason. The book is really intense sometimes, I'm glad I read it.

JRR Tolkien worked on his big 3 Silmarillion tales (children of Huron, Beren and luthien, and the fall of gondolin) up until the year he died. He never finished a complete narrative that he was 100% happy with. Each one of those 3 tales has numerous versions that he wrote and rewrote. The silmarillion has one version of each tale. The Children of Hurin has all of his versions of the tale chopped up and made into a much longer version of the story. It’s amazing!!! Very bleak and depressing but very very good

You will be reading some bangers: JS&MN, Terra Ignota, Children of Hurin,... I hope you will have a great reading year ! There are a couple of versions of the Children of Hurin story as Tolkien kept rewriting it. Both the one in the Silmarillion and in the Unfinished Tales are shorter but incomplete versions. There is as standalone edition of the story: The Children of Hurin which is the most complete version and in my opinion the best version. It's after the Silmarillion my favourite Tolkien book

    • @jakebishop7822
      @jakebishop7822  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      He has 2 Italy books.
Tigana, which is very loosely based on italy on a peninsula that is culturally similar. I would describe it as a fantasy epic about a revolution against a tyrant sorcerer who used magic to erase the memory of one of the nations.
The other is A Brightness Long Ago that is much more historical, based on a setting that is very close to just an alt history Italy with different names to give him more creative freedom. It is centered around the conflict between 2 mercenary captains, but they while being main driver of plot, are not the protagonists, who are people around them.
It also holds the distinction of being my favorite stand alone novel

The Children of Húrin was published as a separate book in 2007, that’s the one you’ll want to read as it can be followed from start to end with no intervention or footnotes from the editor or flipping between different books. (Another wall of text as I watch the video)
I keep meaning to finally read the Illiad and The Odyssey, I have the good Robert Fagles translations, but I just never get around to it.
There is a story early on in my copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales that is hilarious and incredibly dark. It is a bout a young man too dumb to feel fear. So far in the story multiple people have tried to terrify him with horrific things and he just doesn't notice. It is really funny. It scared the crap out of my daughter so I had to stop reading it. I need to go back and finish it.
I want to read The Count of Monte Cristo again. I read it in junior high for some reason and I have forgotten most of it.
Children of Dune is good but God Emperor is my favorite novel in the series.
I loved Hyperion and I need to read the next book.
I still have not finished The Expanse series. Book 7 chapped my ass so bad that I had no desire to finish the series. I did not enjoy it. The first 6 are amazing though.
I'm starting Shards of Honor this weekend.
I have a first edition first printing of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell that stares at me from the top of my bookcase. I need to finally get around to reading it. I agree. The book is lorge and I don't want to do it.
I want to read Dying of the Light and The Armageddon Rag this year. GRRM writes real good.
Thanks to you I bought The Grace of Kings. I will try and read that pretty soon.
I would be very worried about anyone who takes on a personality from Blood Meridian lol. It is my favorite western of all time but man it can be rough. That is nice hardcover you have there.
The Dragon's Path is the only Abraham I have read. Orbit had a deal where you bought The Dragon's Path and Leviathan Wakes as a single ebook back in 2011. I was trying to justify my new Kindle at the time and I wanted something new to read so I picked them. It was early in the ebook times and seems strange now but it was a good deal and I enjoyed them.
I need to read it again.
I flexed on Jimmy in his comments when I told him about my Hardcover first printing first edition of The Darkness that Comes Before. I picked it up for $12 last year. I need to get around to reading it. I read the description and it seems like it has everything I want in a fantasy novel.
Your list of stuff to read is my list haha. Fire Upon the Deep is almost at the top of the queue for me. Let me know if you get to it before I do. I will read it with you.
Really? haha Too Like the Lightning is downloaded on my phone right now.
All Quiet on the Western Front is great. I read it as a teenager and then again a year or two ago. I highly recommend Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger. It is All Quiet but an actual memoir. It is fantastic and he was a war hero in Germany and when Hitler came to power the Nazi party wanted to use him as a spokesperson and he told them to pound sand. Junger was awesome.
The Road is beautiful but I will never read it again. Now that I have a child it would break me.
I have the Illustrated Gormenghast trilogy. I'm waiting for others in Jimmy's discord to start it then I will give it a go.
I do not like Catch-22 at all. Let me know if you read it so I can excoriate it and you can let me know if my issues with it make sense.
    The Rithmatist is fun.
Promise of Blood is fine... I read the trilogy and it was entertaining but just okay.
I would make a video like this but I would end up reading none of them.

Empire of Black and Gold is better than Guns of the Dawn

If you don’t read and love the red rising, the rest of it, then you truly know nothing. And we have a very similar taste. To not appreciate red rising is simply not possible, I actually don’t have the words to express to you just how wrong you are.

You don't have words to express how wrong this hypothetical future Jake is? Or am I already too wrong to be expressed for my plans of reading the rest on 2025?

@@jakebishop7822 no, no, you are wrong at the moment, for your lack of appreciation of sheer perfection, that is the red rising 😳 and if you continue on this wrong path, you will be wrong in the future well ☹️ but that will not be possible, after all, you do love, Guy Gavriel Kay

@@YaFeya13 hhhh, how can a series be perfection if it lies to me about an emotion a character is feeling in first person present.
      Seems dubious

@@jakebishop7822 see, Jake, this is what I honestly do not understand. I am much older than you and quiet, shall I say, jaded?
I don’t remember the last time I shed a tear while reading, actually, I do and it’s been a long time, and then a few times while reading the red rising. Please please, please, continue reading, these next books are much darker and much more. “Adult”? It’s what happens after the revolution, if you know what I mean. See, I am driving and speaking into the phone, so I know my rambling will not make sense but if you’re willing to trust a complete stranger, who is this enthusiastic, please do. There is just no way you will be sorry, in my humble opinion these books are the best serious I’ve ever read, and I have read a lot

@@YaFeya13 I am definitely going to continue the series, don't worry. I just don't want to do the Five Warrior Angels situation where I read books 1 and 2 and then the next book comes out more than a year later and I am hesitant to start the last book because I have forgotten stuff.
I am really hyped for Iron Gold, Dark Age, and Lightbringer though
