I'm not saying this scene is long, but I am saying George left for India in the middle of it and still caught the end.
@@Rigel7WasAlreadyUsed 😂
George went to India after the movie Help. He discovered the sitar in the restaurant scene of the movie.
I'm not saying it's long, but Keith Richards was only 80 years old at the beginning of it.
😂
I always considered Paul’s bit in the opening where he’s sitting with his grandfather in disguise to be his solo scene. That cut scene felt like an eternity and made my brain melt.
Being able to meet Victor and watching AHDN at Abbey Road!?!? That alone is the story of a lifetime, lucky you!
It's no wonder the scene was cut. As a professional film editor I would have recommended to the director that the scene be cut too. It seemed that the scene was meant to bring about a bit of the Liverpudlian accent and humor, but as we all know, Paul wasn't the greatest of actors. He's a musical genius, but he's no thespian. Love that you got to hang with Victor Spinetti. What an amazing experience and story.
Agreed, John. I wonder if it had been left in, would it have helped or hindered Ms Blair's career?
@@Parlogram Hmm, that's a good question.
Even if Paul gave a stellar performance, the film is much better without the scene, it seems like a dud.
I don't like the reason why they said it isn't proper for a Beatle to be left alone with a girl. John was basically left alone with a girl with his monolog scene as they were coming off stage where she stated your him, then look like him, then you don't look like him at all. Crazy excuses. I can see that it wasn't played out well to scrap it.
I did like the references to the group and how fulfilling it was to be a part of it, that would have been a pretty cool inclusion as a thought on its own without attaching a serious or reflecting tone to it.
What's odd about this dialogue is how serious a lot of it sounds. This was a light-hearted , low budget movie about the adventures of a pop group, wasn't it?
Yes. Maybe they would have tried to play it as lighthearted banter, but the dialogue doesn’t come across like that.
Yeah, thank god they cut it out. There really isn't anything of note in this entire conversation, no humour, wit or anything really. It just rambles and overstays its welcome making you lose interest and get bored midway through it, whereas there isn't a single moment in the released film like that. A Hard Day's Night is a near perfect film with how unrelentingly witty, fast paced and tight it is. Not a single wasted moment in it.
"fast paced" -- are you referring to Ringo's drunken walk scene?
1) I read a book a while back written by an American Beatles fan. She was the one who formed the Victor Spinetti Fan Club. She met him several times and she's the one who received the fuzzy sweater as a gift.
2) I just finished watching the 1964 Miss Marple movie _Murder Most Foul_ . A young actress with straight hair caught my attention. Turns out she played the secretary in the George Harrison scene in _A Hard Day's Night_ .
Miss Marple was so damn HOT!
The young actress in both HDN and Murder Most Foul was Alison Seebohm.
@@beatler11Miss Marple is HOT ? I think you’re confusing the Agatha Christie books character with the blonde secretary in a HDN …
It sends chills down my spine to have been lucky to have been a part of that movie, to actually have seen the young amazing Beatles in real life and been part of their circle even for a short few months of filming.
Great to know!! What was your role/task in the movie?
@westfield90 What did you do, exactly?
Big, if true!
Tell us more!
Let's here more!!!!!😀
I really enjoyed your story of buying Victor Spinetti's script, Andrew! It was very gracious of you not to go ahead with the sale and return the script to Victor, who comes across as a very kind and generous man. I think that Paul's scene, if it had been included, would have really slowed down the pace of the film and seemed too long in my opinion. John and George's solo scenes were very humorous.
I too was able to meet and talk with Victor at BEATLEFEST in Los Angeles CA. He was very kind and loved talking to everyone. Plus he does a great impersonation of John Lennon. Very good episode this week.... Thank you for sharing everything with all of us. Stay Gold!
Fine work, Andrew! That five-year rule was terribly short-sighted. History...lost forever!
Through the recreation of the Paul's scene, you can kind of imagine how the actual scene would have gone. It had some really charming bits. This wonderful recreation makes you wish that footage of celluloid still existed.
I have to believe they were just trying to spare Paul's blushes when they told him the scene had been dropped due to the lack of pace. There is quite a lot of dialogue and I cannot imagine Paul's performance sounded convincing against that of the professional Isla Blair.
Poor Paul, nobody could've made this scene work. I guess the screenwriter was going for a scene where he could flirt, but it's nowhere near funny enough
Wow, the AI performance is pretty impressive! The way it can interpret context and adjust tone and cadence to match is remarkable. Thanks for creating!
When I was in film school back in the late 1900’s (1984) one of our assignments was to direct and then edit a scene from a movie using theater dept. students. THIS is the scene I did! I still have the original VHS copy someplace. I was also always fascinated by the scene and why it got cut. I figured it was because Paul sort of already had enough plot with his Grandfather. I found the scene in that old “A Hard Day’s Night” script paperback with the red cover.
Wow. Great
Load your scene into youtube plz
Great hearing about your time with Victor. I met Victor Spinetti at the Sydney Opera House in 1990. He was doing his one person show ‘A Very Private Diary’ (amazing performance). We chatted afterwards for quite some time. He was very friendly, candid and regaled my partner and I with many a Beatle story. A great night!
Thanks for sharing your story. Never heard a bad word said about him.
Scene cut for all the reasons mentioned, but too bad it was destroyed. It would be great bonus for updated BluRay release. Awesome that you spent time with Victor Spinetti.
Great video…I can see why this scene was cut…one correction…Paul was actually not a bad actor…the train scene with his grandfather is priceless…all seemed quite comfortable in front of the camera
Fantastic story of your Spinetti encounter! I had the honor of meeting him at a very early Beatlefest in the USA. He signed something for me (this was before they started charging a fee) and was very warm and friendly. “Nice to meet you Ed” whilst shaking my hand. Spinetti seemed like a genuine person and your story more than underscores that! Cheers! Ed
That's nice to hear, Ed.
You’ve certainly had a rather charmed Beatles life Andrew. Thanks for sharing your experience with Victoria and the cut scene with Paul. Your knowledge and expertise is greatly appreciated.
amazing story! i remember Victor as the Army Sergeant in Magical Mystery Tour, great report as usual Andrew, well done (-:
Victor was an amazing talent. Great stories this episode. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I can see why the scene was cut, but what a shame for Isla Blair not to have had this interaction with Paul in the final film (though she has had LOADS of credits over the years). I can't help speculating that parts of this scene could have been saved if they were intercut in an amusing way with another scene... but that wasn't the way A Hard's Days Night worked. Anyway, that was another very informative video, and how amazing to have those personal memories of Victor Spinetti!
Another great video! Hard to believe such a poorly written scene came from that great script…I mean wow, that was wood
Given the dialogue, no wonder the scene was cut.
Such a bummer that the footage no longer exists.
That was one hell of a script! No wonder it took two days of filming. I'm wondering if the entire dialogue was used for the film, or if they edited it down a bit prior to filming. Either way, I can understand them not using it. It was a bit too detached from the rest of the film. I greatly appreciate you recreating the scene to give us this insight. As always, great upload!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello. I also think the scene is a little lethargic. But it is a pity that the material was lost. It could well have been in a collection of deleted scenes as extra content for a Blue Ray, precisely for an anniversary. It was an excellent video Mr. Andrew, as always I really enjoyed it. Greetings from Mexico.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Andrew, 😂 glad that was cut, bit cringy. Would like to have met Victor seems like a decent guy. I ded meet and had a good chat with Norman Rossington back in the mid 90s. Lovely man and generous with his time.
Norm's best buddy was Albert Finney. They're both in the excellent film, "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning".
Norman always seemed like a nice chap.
Brilliant again Andrew! I personally thought George's scene in the film was the best bit! I suppose the script writers thought they could play on John's cynicism, Paul's intelligence and Ringo's humorous character, but were at a loss as to what 'stereotype' to put on George. This left him to be himself and be more natural in the film. No wonder he formed Handmade Films years later. Fascinating video you made.
Agreed. George was very good in AHDN. Better than Ringo even. He had what seemed to us outsiders as a genuine Liverpudlian manner and sense of humor.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great video, Andrew. I actually acted (very briefly) with Victor Spinetti in one of his one man shows a few years before he died. He signed his book for me too. I saw 'Hard Day's Night' on release. My Mum took us with several of our friends, bless her. I bought that magazine that features in your film in '64 too. I wrote an essay on the film at the Open Univrtsity. I was aware of the scene as it has been published. It's nice to have it read.
I'm sure it was a great show! Thanks for sharing your memories.
@@Parlogram It was. Victor is greatly missed.
Thanks for going through the trouble recreating Paul's solo scene but I lost interest about halfway through it. But I love the story about you meeting Victor Spinetti.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another winner, Andrew. I'd love to see you investigate why some of the songs in the movie run so slow, and why it can't seem to be fixed.
Victor was great in Hard Days Night and Help! Glad you got to meet him He sounds like a nice man
What an unexpected treat (although it's absolutely no surprise that the scene was cut)! Thanks!
I'm currently 34, and I'm pretty sure my parents took me to a screening of A Hard Day's Night in an actual cinema at some point during the late 90s or very early 2000s. Though I wish I remembered the experience better, I'm glad I had it at all. I was always more a fan of Help! as a film.
I came across a soft cover book of the Hard Day's Night script in my local library in the U.S. It was from 1977 and published by HudsonFineBooks. The book consists of the script to the movie along with stills from the movie that follow the script. I remember at lunch time in high school me and a few people would get together and read the parts from the movie. It took a couple of days to go through the book, because our lunch was only an hour, and half of that was eating.
Very cool story about meeting Victor Spinetti. Very nice idea to recreate the lost McCartney scene. I always wondered why Paul never had a solo spot like the others but this makes it very apparent. Thanks very much for sharing this Andrew!
Oh my goodness, no wonder that scene was cut. It’s really bad.
Years ago in high school I made a comic recreating this piece of lost media and sent it to my teacher who unfortunately wasn't nice to me at all but that's lost too.
The scene definitely would have ruined the pacing so I can understand why they left it out.
I think it's the writing of the scene that's at fault.
Hi Andrew, thanks for the video and for jogging my memory, on the evening of April 2nd 2005, I attended a screening of A Hard Day’s Night at Abbey Road Studio 1. Victor Spinnetti was a guest speaker as was Neil Innes. Victor sat in front of me and on leaving he forgot his overcoat. I found myself calling his name and running after him. He was so grateful and proceeded to tell me stories of going round to John Lennon’s house at Kenwood (he said John was his favourite). A lovely kind man. Best wishes, Paul.
Great story! I'm glad you got to interact with Victor.
Still need to watch 'A Hard Days Night' myself. I actually thought this scene was interesting especially when she asked him about himself and the band and if they are happy. And I like what Paul said about sharing your gift rather then keeping it to yourself. If they polished the scene up a little bit I think I could have been a really great part of the movie.
Also that's a really an amazing story on how you met Victor! It was very kind of you to give it back and for him inviting you out.
This very personal story is my favorite thing to have watched on the channel so far. Thank you Andrew!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It is easy to understand why it was cut out of the movie. It is dull and bland. A total sleeper.
But thank you for sharing Paul's unknown solo movie performance.
Always nice to find out about things I never knew existed. Beatles info seems infinite. Thank You!
a fab, gear, fave rave, top of the poppermost story. jaw dropping you spent time with Victor Spinetti. such a lovely story and sad he's gone. people like that are unique. it's a big loss that Pauls scene has been lost. just for the irreplaceable historical document, not for the dire log. hehe
What a wonderful story. What a great thrill to meet the man himself. He also starred in ‘how I won the war’. I think. You were very lucky. Well done.
I finally got around to watching that film.. yeah it’s terrible lol
Great story about Victor. How wonderful it must have been to strike up a friendship with him. As far as the cut scene, just based on the dialogue, I think it was a prudent move to withdraw that scene from the film.
Amazing story about you and the wonderful Victor Spinetti!! Great episode Andrew, one of your best, such exclusive and fresh content, thank you
Thnak you, David. Glad you enjoyed it.
A hard days night is still one of the greatest films ever and I’m glad Richard Lester decided to cut scenes that would’ve slow down the film to keep it more entertaining very humorousq
You outdid yourself with this one. 👍🏻
Thanks Matt!
What a wonderful treat to hear. Bravo!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Andrew, an inspiring video! I have enjoyed the A Hard Day's Night celebrations!!!! 🎉 I saw John's hand writen lyrics a few years ago in the British Library, which you mentioned in the last video. Very exciting!!! Cheers 😊
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
There’s something so soothing about your voice! I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for your hard work. I never thought about Paul needing a solo as he had the plot with his grandfather.
Thank you so much!
A wonderful video. I'm not sad that Paul's scene was left out of the final cut, since, it is far too wordy.
Yeah! Thanks!
I like George's "the lads and I turn down the volume and say rude things to her"
A clever idea for a video. Nice to hear the dialog - will be even better when we can hear a good Paul AI (and a Liverpudlian accent) doing this in the future.
It’s rather nice to finally have this recreation of that scene, and to know where it would have fit within the context of the film. But yeah, not only have Paul’s acting skills always been questionable, the scene seems to me to be quite a bit longer than the others’ solo bits and it completely would’ve halted the momentum of the film.
As an aside, I always find it rather amusing when you have someone at the level of Paul’s rare brilliance actually not being fantastic at something, in his case, acting. For decades now I’ve seen him in a variety of contexts in skits whether on Saturday Night Live or appearing with Jimmy Fallon and there’s something in his character where he feels he needs to “ham” everything up and it’s just too much.
I’m sure you’re well familiar, but if you look up this fellow Stevie Riks on TH-cam, especially the clip where he has Paul making a cup of tea, it’s hysterically funny. “Doooooooooooo!!!” 😂
The irony is that he should be good at skits, since he's known to be good at voices and impressions -- you do catch a glimpse of this talent when he's flirting with Pattie in AHDN and when he's reading the newspaper in Get Back. But it seems that as soon as you turn a camera on him, he just becomes so self-conscious and starts to ham it up.
What a thrill to discover this rarity, but I'm happy they left it out of the movie. I agree with Lester about its pace, and I don't think Paul exhibited the natural abilities that this scene would require. One of the best parts about A Hard Day's Night is how the exaggerated dialogue in the solo scenes helped to personify the authentic personalities of The Beatles, primarily with John's quick and acerbic yet childlike wit and George's unsentimental perusal. I love this film so much.
That was a pretty good recreation. The voices were just about right, and I was glad to have heard it.
You never cease to amaze. 👍
Freaking fascinating Andrew, truly superb effort and outstanding results. I didn't know about the Paul solo scene and never wondered about it either, granted I only saw the movie for the first time a few month ago. The scene comes alive with the accompanying photos and spirited voice acting, I could almost imagine it clearly playing. Thank you so much for this sir, I'll be replaying this video dozens of times I'm sure.
That was so much fun. Thanks. However, I can see why the scene was left out. A Hard Day's Night, is a well paced movie and just the right amount of running time. That scene was unnecessary but maybe I'd feel that way if it had been included and another scene removed. Then maybe that scene would now seem superfluous and justifiably left out.
There was “A Hard Day’s Night” Special Edition DVD released circa 2002 in the USA with the missing McCartney Scene in the Extras Disc.
I started watching their movies during lockdown but I got the blu rays. I will be re-watching this during the week. Thank you for sharing an excellent Beatles story.
I found it quite charming. I saw the movie when it was first released. Much of it couldn’t be heard over the girls screams! That scene with Paul may have not been up to scratch but it reflected the daft dry humour of the film and I found myself drawn into the scene as I listened! Nice bit of nostalgia. Thank you
Wow, amazing story, man!
Love your channel! Keep 'em coming!
A few months after A Hard Day's Night was released, I bought a copy of the paperback book which was part of the promo for the movie. It cost an acceptable 2 shillings and sixpence and the writing credit went to John Burke, "based on the original screenplay by Alun Owen." Burke wrote dozens of books (I don't exaggerate - I have 26) in the '60s that were mostly based on film and TV scripts as well as some excellent horror and thriller originals. Burke's "novel" runs for 114 pages of text with 8 pages of photos. The Paul-Isla Blair scene deleted from the film appears in the book across pages 89 to 95 and is very close to the script that Andrew has used for his excellent programme. I've always thought that the scene could have worked if rewritten to remove some of Owen's (I presume) parables and diversions such as the treacle toffee story and not have to rely on Paul to carry it. So it is obvious to see why it was cut. Isla Blair may only have been 19 at the time of shooting, but she would have completely dominated the scene and left Paul demonstrating his lack of acting ability. However, it would have been fascinating to see what they did actually film over those two days in April '64. Sadly, we shall never have that privilege.
Something I would also like to point out regarding the deleted Sam Ahab scene in Help!. Frankie Howerd, who played Sam, would go on to play the antagonist Mr. Mustard (named after the Abbey Road song) in the 1978 musical jukebox film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which featured Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees as the protagonists. Two Beatles associates were involved in the film: George Martin, credited as the film's musical director, and Billy Preston, who played Sgt. Pepper. Sgt. Pepper is Howerd's last film in his acting career before his passing 14 years later in 1992.
Andrew . I spent an afternoon, and dinner with Walter Shenson when they had the rerelease of a Hard Days Night in San Francisco in 1999 - I can’t believe that was 25 yrs ago. That shook me, I had to look up the date - I’ve got some photos I took of him in the Castro Theatre , and took the film - B&W to an hour photoshop in the same block. I learned much about his feelings about each Beatle as an actor. If I knew how to reach you privately I would tell you what he said with discretion a must . He signed every pix in an entire roll of film, as well as my first edition “ I ME MINE “ leather cover in slipcase signed by George . If I can figure out how to write you where it would not go public,I will.
You can email me at: andrew@parlogramauctions.com
I’m not surprised it was cut. As written, it seems to bring the film to a dead stop, and the Liverpudlian(?) dialog would have been way over the heads of an international audience.
I used to have the novel of "A Hard Day's Night" which had this scene in it. I remember reading a review of some sort which said that this scene had been cut, in part, due to "Paul's hammy and self-conscious acting!"
Somehow you've managed to make this episode both Fab AND Gear, seemingly without breaking a sweat.
I am in awe: thank you!!😁
Glad you enjoyed it!
In 2007 I got to meet Victor at the Mirage HOtel at the Beatlefest. Got my photo with him. We , a group of us,all met for cocktails later that night. Such an honor to meet someone who was close friend to them. He had some very funny Heather Mills crap.....
BTW, I watch your videos almost daily. They are well done and enjoyable.
Victor was full of funny stories!
Nice job Andrew ! It would have been nice if the scene was preserved for posterity and included as a bonus scene in a Blu Ray remaster but alas there was no crystal ball into the future of remasters, etc and they didn’t deem it worth saving. Such is life.
I can see why they cut it. Far too long and dry. Would have dragged the flow down.
I would love to have seen this in the movie!
This is the BBC,- the Best Beatles Channel on TH-cam.
No contest
Thank you so much!
Even as a hardcore early Beatles fan (hamburg to candlestick park days) i never understood the point of john's solo scene all the dialogue felt so senseless, i still would like the Paul's scene in, A Hard Day's Night wasn't suppossed to be a Masterpiece of a film itself either way.
What a charmed life you're living, Andrew! How totally cool to hang out with Victor Spinetti! Amazing!!!
What a great story about Victor! Though sad about his later years. He always struck me as a kind soul. I can see why that scene was cut. Between the length of it and what probably was a wooden performance from Paul it’s hard to imagine it in the movie. But then again if we had just read the script of the finished movie before having seen it numerous times we might think the same of other scenes. Still it would have been nice to have a shorter scene of some sort with Paul without a lot of dialog. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
He should have kept that scene and re-used it in Give My Regards To Broadstreet. It's just as good as any scene in that film😁
I agree with Richard Lester on this one the scene being dropped from the film ringo and George had solo parts which balanced the film perfectly as john said writing im happy just to dance with you for George to sing in the film so George could have a piece of the action
I never thought about the fact that there was no Paul solo scene. Sometimes you can be oblivious to the obvious.
As always Andrew you never disappoint great episode. I’ve met Victor a few times a great person 😊
Fab!!
Loved hearing this (acting was really Fab Gear too.. well a BIT grotty).
Barty
I Loved Your Take On Paul’s Lost Scene.. it’s Such A Shame Its Lost.
I'm amazed they kept the film out-takes and trims as long as 5 years. You would have thought by 1969 they might have appreciated they had a certain value and kept at least some of them.
You live through the lyrics of London Town WITH THE VICTOR SPINETTI, WHICH ACTED ON THE MUSIC VIDEO as the actor on the music video.
Loads of fun!! The American film critic Roger Ebert would have loved this! A Hard Day’s Night was one of his absolute faves and I got to talk with him about fairly often. We’d throw out a line of dialogue and see how far we could go. It was hilarious. He’d probably dig the whole AI thing as near the end of his life, that’s basically how he communicated. Oops! Talk about sliding way off topic! How awesome is it that something we’ve loved so dearly and watched and rewatched so attentively for 60 years and we can still be learning more about it! Definitely agree with this scene not being in the film but it would have been great to have a solo paul scene in the film. Maybe that would have saved us from Broad Street??? 😄
Love your channel for the content and your enthusiasm. Outstanding work!
Thank you, Sir!
Thanks as always Andrew, for your excellent videos! I really look forward to them each week.
The 'A Hard Day's Night' celebrations were great! It was fascinating hearing of your amazing meeting with Victor Spinetti, and I really enjoyed Paul's deleted scene. Even the Ai voices weren't too bad to be honest!
It's a shame the scene wasn't left in, but I wonder if it was a little bit too long? I also wonder what Paul thought about it, considering he was the only Beatle without one!
I'm really looking forward to the 'Help!' one's too.
Keep up the great videos Andrew! 👍
All the best, Jase 😁
Cheers Jase! Glad you enjoyed it. 👍

thanks again Andrew!!!
Great stuff, FAB even !. Thanks for this one🤩👌.
Glad you enjoyed it!
My first viewing was at the Pix Theater in 1964 where I met my first girl friend who had constructed herself as a Pattie Boyd doppleganger. She still bears a resemblance, but we parted ways ages ago.
Another fun one, Andrew! I admit not knowing much about Victor Spinetti but he sounds like a really interesting man.
And yeah, the Paul scene … like George’s solo one, it takes too long to get rolling and I could see how Paul might not get the right tone. Unlike John’s amazing solo scene, my favorite non-musical moment in AHDN.
Victor Spinetti! I could listen to him for hours. Meanwhile, Paul's solo scene felt like hours. (But it's still a shame that it doesn't survive as outtake footage.)
Thank you for this enlightening video Andrew. Is the first time this cut dialog was read publicly? I am surprised that so many photographs from that scene still exist. Given the audience you have developed, that includes people in The Beatles organization, and at Abbey Roað, I wouldn't be surprised if someone had a grainy B&W copy of this scene on film or video stashed away, and might send you a copy.
