      Most of the comment is pro or against this as risky etc.. But the middle exist, have a part time job where you can build your experience and have free time to climb, plus if she is 18 it does not mean she will live forever like that! maybe a year, 2 or 3 and get bored or have enough of fun and look for a job.. my advice to do it after uni.

      starbucks is destroying the world. I pick up trash in my spare time and non-biodegradable plastic starbucks cups and green straws are the majority of the garbage on the streets and in parks. A constant line of cars, with engines left running, at their drive-thru...it's an environmental disaster. This was even happening after the economy crashed in 2008. People were crying they were poor...yet, there they were, still lined up at the fucking drive-thru to pay 10+ bucks for a stupid coffee drink. Idiots.

    I lived in my jeep for a month this summer, traveling the country, and Ranae's Element is set up practically the exact same way as my Jeep was. Seeing this really makes me miss living on the road! I love how she lives life her way, and she'll be able to survive through anything. Unlike the judgmental people in these comments.

      My Jeep isn't paid off yet, so I needed to get back to work. I've never worked "gigs" or short term jobs like the girl in this video, but needing to make enough money for living/fuel plus making enough to cover my payment/car insurance isn't easy. Once the Jeeps paid off I'd love to be back on the road.

Covered gas, basic target bill, insurance and even room rent for about 20 months b4 that deal ended, then the car was very usable, 2001 Honda C-RV, available for purchase, too btw...
      Craigslist has lots of opportunities for work, but check out their ref's if you're unsure... Go Live, sell your payment vehicle and purchase one you Can actually afford.

      Yeah, is not that simple...this kind of live (with all the pros and cons) is only available in certain countrys (USA is one of a few) in wich the economic "wellness" of certain "zones" allow, the abundance you need to find "perfect" food in a dumpster, kinda living on Disney there...go more closer to the Mexican border and try to live like this...people are doing horrible jobs there just for survive!, they are not "greedy"...being greedy is for lucky people.
      So the point is: in order to live like this YOU NEED that most people work her fucking ass day to day, to generate abundance, is like...hitch-hiking: if there wasn't a guy working his ass off to keep his truck running...then you go nowhere.

    On Dumpster diving, this is my opinion. I used to be in the food industry, I dropped out of Culinary school, most of the "food rules" we have are extremely conservative which makes sense for liability reasons. I've found over the past couple years that in my experience as long as my body doesn't reject the food it's most likely safe to eat. I assume it's the same thing as listening to my intuition and that in the beginning it's hard to tell what your reaction to the food is, but the more aware I've become of how I am, the more reliable my judgement is. Would love to hear your opinion
    Edit: I couldn't figure out how to fit it into the edit but Ranae lives on 70-100% Dumpster food depending on what city she is in. She never sacrifices health for free food. If she isn't finding Veggies she will purchase them.

      there is nothing wrong with it as long as you're not a dick about it. i've often gotten stuff from local shops or supermarkets which they would have thrown in the trash due to my jobs. i admit i've only taken veggies and fruits, which i can identify easily if they are still good or not, but if you are willing to spend more attention to it, i am pretty sure, you can use a lot of the other stuff just aswell
      .

    Wow, I am shocked to read those comments from you americans! How can most of you find it disgusting to eat food which is perfectly fine (mostly thrown away because of an extremly short best before-law, so the food is ggod but stores HAVE to throw it away) which would otherwise be wasted? In Germany it's quite a big movement and a great way of making a statement against food-waste. This has nothing to to with not being ABLE to pay for food!

    • @mommahil4323
      @mommahil4323 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      sickerOr I was shocked at the responses too - in the uk the problem is being addressed by major supermarkets allowing this stuff to be used in community kitchens and to teach people how to make the best out of what's available. Even more amazing is the fact that the aside of dumpster diving seems to have completely overtaken the main subject! Thanks for some good ideas and a beautifully presented video.

    • @NjniaVanDerWald
      @NjniaVanDerWald 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      actually in germany it has become quite a problem that supermarkets started to "hide" the rotten garbadge between the edible stuff to save on garbadge fees. and the community kitchens aren't allowed to be picky about the donated stuff, so in the end they themself had to spend the garbadgefee, which at some places lead to them paying more for the stuff than they would if they bought it.
      Luckily at least in my vicinity they had adressed the problem and most supermarkets followed.

    My grandfather used to stumper dive. I used to go with him. I used to eat the food until I found worms in my candy bar I no longer eat nestle crunch because of it and I won't eat from the dumpster either but I did have did growing in containers and a community garden until I get my land. When I get ready to do my tiny house and camper van I'm going to own land first because I refuse to be riding around without somewhere to have permanent residents to park my stuff and grow food. She can visit Community Gardens and get free food from there in different cities rather then dumpster diving.

    Hey Ranae, first i thought the video was fake until i have followed some expressions you wrote down to your site. I'm happy, it feels so good that you belong to mainly to the 5%ers they realize that you only have to walk in the footprints you'll walking along in life, what ever it takes...you're responsible to feel free to find your luck in life which the most will miss. You represent an own class of woman. Stay that way i admire these traits, i don't know you (sadly) but i get the feeling of good karma, you and your sister will rock your way...you'll made it. The world is full of haters but you cope with it. It's amazing that you're so young but you know your lifepattern. Someday, when you hit Germany on your journey, feel free letting me know we will heading for the alpes I'll give you a tour if wanted. You're blessed n gifted....so long good journey.

    I learned to dumpster dive by a "housesless" man in Santa Cruz, about 1992, my home of 42 years, before moving to Minnesota 15 years ago, and I count it among some of the best skills ever, after raw foods for reversing cancer, herbalism, massage, yoga. Our lives are hijacked by the fear of puritanical reality of having our "hair done," our nails painted, and smelling fresh like fragranced dryer sheets. I often do not shower for months because if you live and eat "clean" you can sponge bathe quite easily and save your skin, glands and body the suffering of being repeatedly exposed to chlorine and fluoride. I love observing young people (I'm 56 now) engaging in real life! Way to go, positive! Reduce, and live! Too many people have lugs of stuff, that will become a burden on the people closest to them. Find clothing, food, dog food, and everything else! Only thing is that in California now, dumpsters are locked often, and you could be cited due to the ever increasing laws to keep to the linear reality.

The salad is sometimes questionable but the packages of dressing and croutons means I can just buy the lettuce for a lot cheaper then buying the salad kits.

    I'm aware of the mindset behind dumpster diving, but I don't get why so many rock climbers are doing it. I am a rock climber myself, but I don't take my food out of dumpsters and I probably never will. Think about where your insanely expensive climbing equipment comes from. I know that for example Arc'teryx is manufacturing their equipment in Canada, but even they buy their materials from 3rd world countries, kinda supporting the troubles in such places. It get's even worse with companies such as Petzl and Black Diamond. Don't get me wrong, I own products of all of the named companies, but I am fully aware that rock climbing isn't as "green" as everyone thinks it is. Just growing long hair and living in a van doesn't make you eco-friendly. So dumpster diving for food is (in my opinion) just a thing because people feel guilty for owning such expensive and in most cases far from eco-friendly gear. I wouldn't be surprised if most of such dumpster-diver-climbers own a down jacket for example. (kind of a hypocrisy) We have a big dumpster-dive-movement in Switzerland, but what I really hate is that most of those "ecos" leave dumpsters and trashcans behind like a pack of dogs or foxes would. Trash everywhere, that's why most reataurants and companies over here need to lock their dumpsters. It's sad that we have to protect our trash better than our goods. (I work in the food industry as well) I'm not against it...but please at least clean up your mess. And don't shove it down my throat If you are a rock climber...You might do something good to the environment with your minimalistic lifestyle, but you make up for it with the next rope you buy...think about it.

    I love your vids, Dylan... and I love that despite improving significantly in quality and gaining a huge amount of subs, you seem just the same as in the South America vlogs. Keep up the good work. If you're ever coming to Japan, let me know. There is a place for you to crash here and certainly some dumpsters to dive lol. I rarely meet Americans travelling abroad, but when I do they are always awesome people and have a good story to tell.

    Awesome. My only worry would be if something is spoiled. It looked like she was able to get salads & sandwiches. they usually require refrigeration. This would be great if she was able to time the dive as soon as they were thrown out. But again like she said, you can pretty much look at something and see if it’s gone bad so....dive on😀

    I worked behind a Trader Joe's for a while and they would bring dozens of grocery carts full of packaged food weekly, I would get all sorts of perfectly fine food not to mention beautiful bouquets of flowers I would bring to the cemetery. I would encourage you to consider how much food you end up throwing away too!

    Why waste it! If we could give all our good " throw away food" to homeless people before we binned it. People wouldnt be hungry. And we would look like heros helping those who needed it. But People with narrow minds think its disgusting. The reality is throw away better food than most countries get to ever see. Just cause its in a bag sealed doesnt mean its bad. Jesus wake up people and remember how lucky we are!

    I know from first had experience that most food thrown out is actually still good and is only thrown away because either it is within a month of expiration or because the package fell on the floor and we had to throw it away because of liability reasons. We didn't want someone finding out a package was on the floor and then claim it got them sick.

    The amount of waste that a lot of companies produce is awful. My grandfather and I ran a food bank in Colorado for many years, and we would go around to places like Starbucks and grocery stores to collect this food. Everything was going good until Starbucks corporate office found out and forced the management to throw away the food rather than donate it. At one store they were even told they had to smash the food to make sure it would not be taken from the dumpster.

    Must be nice to be so wealthy you can choose to dumpster dive. LOL. Climbing lifestyle means you're a dirt-bag? WTH Toilet paper is cause you're going to get the spurts eating food gone bad that has been in a hot trash bin that still looks good. Thanks for opening with that scene. I used to work at Starbucks and they would give away a ton of food to me because or else it’d be thrown away and my boss didn’t like that but then he retired and the new manager stopped that. I’m pretty sure that’s the standard so majority of the food IS GOOD I promise.

    Wow what a cool person. Van life is hard when its rainny/poor condtions, and dumpster diving is highly stigmatised by idiots (see comments section of this youtube video) but is a great way to stay on budget when on the road and for all the random, cool scores. 100% worth it for the freedom, adventure, and being able to follow you passion. Keep up the good work!
