Funny enough, it's actually pretty viable on Maddening. Mercie has one of the highest Res growths out of all the students and the Fortress Knight class certification makes her relatively tanky on the physical side (because of its minimum Def on promotion). This makes it very hard for enemies to kill her, especially since she's likely going to get doubled often.
She can actually survive a Death Knight crit the first time you meet him if she qualifies for the class. Obviously, not two crits lol, nobody survives that, barring Miracle shenanigans.
Personally though, I prefer to class her as Sniper because of her budding talent. Magic (specifically Black) is pretty trash on Maddening (lack of Combat Arts, low uses, no additional effects, tome weight hurts on more powerful spells), so giving her Hunter's Volley with a Magic Bow is a better solution, especially since Mercie in her base class is a unit that gets worse as you get better at the game. She lacks any utility in White magic (no Rescue/Warp plays, not even Silence or Ward for niche uses) and healing becomes less impactful as you learn all the thresholds and strats for maps.

@@LAZERAK47V2magic is by no means trash enemies have lower res then defense on average. It’s way better to be a magic class then great knight anyway since you don’t ever get at risk of taking lethal damage because of gambits. The only value of defense and res is the attacks you get on counter attack late game and realistically you shouldn’t be eating a counter attack a lot of the time. Between gambits byleth having windsweep brave weapons combat arts effective chipping with attacks outside enemy range like a mage with a range+ staff or a bow unit you usually don’t even need to worry about that. Maybe edlegard could but even then you just would prefer to reach enough avoid that everything can’t hit you. Defense is the worst stat in 3 houses late game you just don’t get hit a master class that specializes in it is by far the weakest even mortal savants and holy knight are better if really awkward. The only times you are taking damage is getting chipped by a relic to enter vantage range or using blessing on someone to get their vengeances maxed out and you don’t want that damage healed. Mercedes is just bad at using magic because of her poor faith and reason list and her stats which don’t exactly help much either but even as the worst unit in the game she’s still usable
In my very first playthrough I didn’t know what to do with Flayn because I didn’t need another healer, so I decided to go full meme and make her an armour knight. She ended up as one of my best units. If you get her the axe that pulls off her magic stat, she hits/crits like a madman. And with her naturally high res growth and her class’s high def growth, she’s a perfect all around tank.
I used a random generator to decide classes on my recent Azure Moon run & Ingrid/Flayn are my Fortress Knight front line right now til Dedue comes back. 😆
Flayn is a walking bunker with all that Resistance & Defense. 💪 Ingrid is not as extreme but still sturdy.
I tend to play my rpgs very sentimentally, so I made Alois a mage purely because he was so enthusiastic about magic in his supports.

A little bit ago I did a different version of this challenge. While also limiting class options, I only allowed characters to use weapon types they were weak in (excluding authority). This made characters with no weaknesses completely useless, so Byleth’s only utility was the convoy. Really fun run to do, glad to see something similar.

@@robotdude2206 She was, but she still ended up kinda worthless. Hunters Volley Sylvain and Wyvern Lord Yuri were the goats of the run. Wyvern Rider Dimitri was also really strong. It was a really fun run.
A fun challenge video. I think that you are right about difficulty scaling but why wouldn’t you want a super challenging final boss. This reminds me of the final section of radiant dawn where all the enemies are roided
Oh god yea thats right RD will be fun when I get to it yayyyy. I just feel like three houses messed up in their scaling cuz pre timeskip is a cake walk and post timeskip is cracked so if you arent prepared you can get messed over pretty easily.
I had this idea and was curious if anyone already did it. It looks really fun, so I’m definitely going to do it on my next playthrough.
Yea I'd highly recommend this kind of run. Really made me put my thinking cap on each chapter. With the units that dont have a weakness maybe make them into a generally weaker class like a bishop or something?
I have played all the routes and i have always found this routes final boss to be the most pain in the ass of them all😂😂😂

I’m currently doing a Blue Lions New Game Hard Classic challenge run, where I’m only allowed to use weapons, combat arts, abilities, and classes that are each character’s bane and only training students in their bane as well. So I am only using Byleth has an unequipped bait to trigger enemies to attack, since Byleth doesn’t have any banes. This means that awesome units like Leonie, Ingrid, and Ferdinand are off limits. And all non-native magic users like Dedue were also like Byleth in the beginning, just there to get hit until they could get enough training to get spells like heal, nosferatu…The first map, I just swapped weapons between the three house leads from the get go to match their banes. The second map was very difficult and I had to restart it like 5 times (since no one had any weapon/magic proficiency that I could use, since no one had enough training/experience in their bane and I kept encountering low level crit that destroyed most of my students). I’m hoping to see if I can complete the run, since Byleth is functionally remaining at level 1, since they don’t initiate any combat. If you have any recommendations on how to defeat death knight, I’d love to hear it. I haven’t figured it out yet.
mmmmm its kinda hard but the only thing i can think of is grinding mercedes lance skill enough to get that knightletter or whatever its called to demount the horse, hit him with as many gambits as you can while using the strongest attacks you have which should hopefully work but the first part is the most important. Idk if itll work with this run though but hey its an idea
I'm gonna do this challenge in my own copy of three houses on all routes. Not with Anna tho, I don't have the dlc

Bro underrated i started fe3h in february for my birthday since ive wanted to play it for a while and i cant put down the switch for 2 seconds this is pure talent- you should do a solo run id like to see this

@@meteorkaiser Once i finish all 4 routes i want to do a route just like this one but i also wanna try a lysithea solo or byleth solo even though i will utterly fail (for lysithea solo) and a no recruit run, and an annoy edelgard run (Only use characters with crests) When i started the game i didnt know anything about any of the routes, my sister picked verdant wind, my dad did azure moon and i picked black eagles but i ended up picking silver snow (i regret it)
so now im hogging the switch and my sister is stuck at the end of verdant wind while im ahead of her on my third game on azure moon
@@neptune1881 Damn thats not bad in a relatively short amount of time. I got the game on relase day but I havent played it as much as I thought I would. I love the game but the gba titles will always be better for me. I cant relate to you on the sharing of the switch part cuz my family wants nothing to do with games.

Personally prefer Sniper over Bow Knight due to the Class Skill having massive range and damage.

Honestly I'm suprised that I was able to clear it myself in the end tbh. I was very close to throwing in the towel, but I stopped playing for three days and when I came back i cleared it first try so that seemed to do the trick. Thanks as always for the feedback! Sylain best boy!
I did this earlier this week and my mercy KNEW she was gonna be a fortress knight so she got strength and defense on 7/9 levels before promoting to armor knight, and only got more from there.
Yeah it's funny considering although Sylvain's only real deficiency is bows, his stats still revolve around stats that an archer would still enjoy. As a Sniper, he's still potent, and his dark garb makes him look cool as heck.
One challenge i plan to do again soon is the "RNG decides my builds" challenge, or what you might call a hardcore Pokemon Nuzlocke, but for Fire Emblem...
The main idea is pretty simple: For every character you get, they can ONLY ever be trained in a maximum of two skills, decided by an RNG as soon as you get them. So if you get say Lance and Faith on Claude, that's the only two skills you can activly train them in during class and activities. If one of the skills is particularly useless, you are allowed to focus on just one of the two, but you can't trade the discarded one for another, only discard it outright.
Byleth must be focused on just Faith throughout the game to avoid letting them carry the squad on offense.
Additional rules i use include: Only one weapon on a character per mission (if RNG gave you a weapon skill like Swords or Axes, it MUST be a weapon from that skill), and magic users can't have weapons at all. I MUST use the characters who are the lowest level, regardles of their helpfulness in the actual mission. Hero's Relics are banned. Divine Pulses are banned. NO savescumming (you live and die with every choice you make!), and the house you must lead is also decided by RNG. For extra fun, i also flip a coin when i have a choice in dialogue! Combat and missions are free from there, but like in a pokemon Nuzlocke, a full partywipe means that you MUST start the challenge over from the beginning!
Obviously, this isn't really a challenge for Maddening, but on Hard/Classic, this is one of the most stressful but rewarding challenges i have finished, and it took me 82 attempts to finally beat it, and i only had three characters left by the end (which sadly didn't include my chosen waifu... RIP Mercedes!)

@@meteorkaiser Just be prepared to get your ass kicked... It took me nearly 20 tries to even get past the time skip!
The one thing that consistently screws you over in this challenge is the extreme lack of good advanced classes available to you, and i had times where some units just couldn't go beyond Beginner classes for the entire game... Depending on your luck, this challenge can take you literal months to complete with the full set of rules, and i don't even think it's possible on Maddening, but feel free to try if you really hate yourself...
A challenge that is slightly easier to start with is the "mono-skill challenge", where you have to try and beat the game with everyone using the same two skills throughout the game, so you once again let RNG choose two skills, but now EVERY unit must focus on those two skills.
I got screwed on my last attempt at this one, as i got Flying and Faith, so i got no weapon bonusses on anyone, and half my units couldn't even do damage for a few battles, but because they were the lowest level (obviously), i HAD to bring them, so it became a race to try not to get encircled, and pray to the creator above that my units who actually had Faith spells could kill everything before they ran out of charges... It was hell!
I'm trying this. Honestly looks like a fun break from the easy challenge runs I do. This is going to be difficult but I love the idea a lot

Funniest thing is dedues weakest class is armor knight. The man's guaranteed defense growths... So there's zero reason to class him as an armor knight. (600 hours of maddening gameplay.... Priest Dimitri is honestly a lot of fun growth wise)
Felix is not the best example since his bane in Reason becomes a boon but I love this kind of thing.
His canon class is Mortal Savant (Sword/Reason), he is literally made for that class.

Part of it was me completely forgetting about locktouch and the other part was just wanting to give myself a small extra challenge. But mainly im just a dummy who forgot about his skill oops

Lol I literally just did this exact thing with Crimson Flower! Everyone had to use their weakness, like Constance and Mercedes had Axe, Lysenthia used Lance, Ingrid has Faith, etc. It ended up not being difficult on Hard Mode, Classic, with the second to the last battle taking only 5 tries and the last one taking 2 damage. On NG BTW

Unironically Mercie as a great knight isn't completely troll because of her high res and the base defense of the great knight class, she can tank against some of the magic bosses decently well because of her res, I'm not saying it's good but it's definitely fun.

I did this playthrough last year with maximum recruits and it was super fun! Assassin Mercedes and Warrior Marianne were my stand outs!
I did similar, but I’ll be honest- I really liked Marianne for no real reason so Wyvern lord Mari carried my first ever run, but recently gauntlets lysithea has been carrying every map I’ve played. Would recommend trying out if you want

When I do my runs in this game generally I don't recruit from other houses. It's just personal preference at that point but it makes the runs slightly harder as it gives me less options to work with
A golden deer run could also be fun

@@meteorkaiser Just thought I'd let you know, I managed to beat the Red Canyon map on maddening. It wasn't simple by any means, but by starting with the Black Eagles, getting enough luck, and the tactical sacrifice of Ferdinand von Aegir, it was doable. That said, I'm not sure how the rest of the run will go.
@@thenailsageofgeo4975 yea ive given red canyon a few shots on maddening and i can never seem to get though without sacrificing someone but i supposed that might have to be the game plan there.
@@meteorkaiser It helps that each house has someone with no weaknesses. Since it felt strange to use someone like that (ie Ferdinand) in this type of run, I found it to be a fair tradeoff.

The characters you listed don’t use dark magic but instead use black magic, which are two different things in this game

I think I decided on doing three houses after making a couple of decisions. First was I really wanted to replay it anyway so I thought I would make a video out of it. The second reason was probably ease of creation, since I didnt have to mess around with an emulator. Dont worry I have more stuff planned soon. I think figuring out something for 4 and 5 will be hard but I am sure ill think of something.

@@meteorkaiser I would suggest something like only foot unit; only units with a specific starting weapon type (like only units using Axes at base); forced promotion at LV10; cavalry only; 1st chapter units only; only item healing challenge; only units with a type of hair colour + Lord; only 1-2 and 2 range units + Lord.

You could also try iron weapons only, no forged weapons, pre-promoted only + lord, low-tier units only etc...
