Thats good and quite complete. However it is theory and reality is far away from it. For many reasons that do not necessarily have to do with knowledge (eg budget)

Ice-9 My experience is that reality is what you make it. There are many things that you can accomplish from a processes and precision maintenance perspective that don't require extensive budgets or a budget at all in some cases. Consider what you can accomplish within your span of control. PM/PdM activiites can be improved. Maintenance planning and scheduling activities can be improved. We often get wrapped around the axle thinking about what we can't do from a restrictions standpoint compared to the opportunities that are right in front of us. Respectfully, Jeff Shiver

Hi Jeff. My experience is that if it is to fail, it will fail. Thats the reality in maintenance and a prerequisite in your plan towards delivering results. The more you get into detail with your PM, the more the labor hours you spent walking around inpecting while the just cleaned glowing main gear on your central drive fails suddenly due to an internally developed fatigue crack. If you dont have the budget for the spares, then you can calculate the losses yourself (at home).

True, you cannot prevent all failures. By the same token, you can't stock every spare part. The goal of maintenance is to reduce, prevent, or eliminate the failures, more specifically the mitigating the consequences of failure. We have to decide on the mitigating the risk. You can't prevent an incandescent light from failing. The PF curve would be very short with no time to intervene, so inspection is not a reality. You could replace it before 2k hours based on an expected life. Or you can add redundancy to mitigate the consequences of failure. Or we can choose to let it fail and fix it afterwards. All choices that define maintenance strategies. As part of mitigating the consequences, we must decide the likelihood of failure, effects, and consequences. From that, we can decide to invest in spares.
