MY HORSE GETS KICKED

  • Hello everyone!!
    I was first planning on putting another video out but then this week a big step for me happened! After gelding Antares I was really hoping for him to be in the group and today was the first real try after a lot of small steps!
    Don't worry we took our time and the horses know each other for months and have been really close so its not just unprepared.
    Hope you like it and let me know how your horse is in the paddock with other horses!!

    Matt and Jesse: "oh okay, that's good"

      Also territorial aggression between the white gelding and Chase. Introducing the two on neutral ground such as the arena arena, perhaps.

    • @1houndgal
      @1houndgal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would also considering doing it opposite to what was done. Let chase stay in the paddock he is in, and bring the white gelding in.
      And I think not enough time has passed since the gelding, so let the male hormone decrease more by waiting longer.

    I worked a lot with off range wild horses, herd behaviors and social behaviors are one of the biggest differences. There was always tension between the mustangs and domestic horses as they both tried to figure out the new herd dynamics. It's nice to see quite, calm and composed horsemanship. I commend your ability to read a situation and react in a passive but affective way. I was impressed with your decision to place the mare into the mix. Most folks would have separated the boys and try to force them to behave, but by adding the mare you allowed and aided the gelding into asserting and correcting the ex-stud bad behavior. Horsemanship at it's best.

      imjennylyn 12 - thanks for this additional explanation. I’m just learning horse behavior. Right off I could tell Matt and Jesse are excessively caring on these guys. Not sure why. I have several cousins who owned horses. I was confused at their incessant conversations on horses.

    Well done guys, you treat your horses with a lot of respect and know exactly what you are doing. All animals show dominance it is how they can all be together and know where their place is. You don't complain about cattle doing the same thing or wild horses or any wild animal doing what is natural. Letting horses be natural is much better than interfering with nature. I love watching Matt and Jesse, you couldn't get two nicer people interacting with their horses and generally enjoying their life. Please ease up on them.

    Good you are so careful introducing them and taking time ahead to get them used to each other over the fence. I keep my horses in individual paddocks, but next to each other so they can touch noses. I want to minimize any potential turnout injuries, so this has worked well for me. I think by now you have it all worked out. I have seen Antares in turnout and he looks so happy with Macho. I can't remember where Gaio is now, maybe in with Chase or at the other stable?

  • @misssmarteepants3465
    @misssmarteepants3465 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    That actually wasn’t too bad. I had a feeling when you introduced the mare the two boys were going to go at it a bit to stake their claim, lol. I crack up when geldings do this because it’s like ok, you got the girl, now what? 😂😂😂
    If you watch closely, Giovanni is warning Antares from the beginning...he turns his hindquarters, stretches his neck and puts his head out, slight ear pin and then he kicked. He warned him but he didn’t want to listen.
    People get so afraid to let horses sort it out, most of the time they do fairly quickly (although they will still keep testing each other to confirm their hierarchy). This is how horses communicate with each other. 90% of their communication is nonverbal.
    As for my horses, first time I put my two mates together they barely even acknowledged each other, lol. No kicking involved, just an outstretched neck and pinned ears and the other mare yielded. When I added a gelding 🙄 Drama!!!

    Guys, Giovanni is proud cut. He is herding the mare and kicking the rival and squealing. Not a good pairing to put a recently cut stud in with a proud cut one.
    Put your horse with Chase. But in general, horses are very much about the social pecking order so you generally just have to let them work things out. You will get a bite or a kick, it will heal and things will settle down. They will find their own order soon enough.

    If you don’t let the horses fight it out, they’ll never pick the hiarchy. They *need* to sort out their pecking order and that’s how it works. Horses don’t take a poll. Horses don’t vote. No, they elbow their way to the top. A horse is either the lead horse or he isn’t. So these guys need to give each other a good run for their money to establish the totem poll.

      USS Enterprise NCC-1701D einige versuchen bei solchen Dingen einzugreifen und das möglichst harmonisch zu machen, was absolut absurd ist. Tiere müssen das unter sich aus machen. Da hat der Mensch nichts zu suchen. Wer damit nicht umgehen kann, dass sich Pferde auch mal treten oder beißen hat es einfach nicht verstanden.

    That went pretty well, good job guys. I love you both, you are both great horseman and have great videos. One trick I have learned from one of my old time horse mentors is... If you have an aggressive/dominant horse like a former stallion you want to introduce to new horses, move them into the other animals paddock, it takes away any attempt for them to try to be territorial. They are also slightly more reserved being in another animal's domain (they can smell the sent of them there), so they give them a basic initial respect. Also, it I have found it in my experience, if you want to introduce one horse to an already established group with an established pecking order there seems to be less drama if you put the new horse in with the established group at the same time, because if done individually by adding members one at a time the pecking order is going to be reestablished ever time another individual is added creating more drama. Just some of my observations over the years that I have found works for me. Keep the great videos coming, and best of luck to you both in all that you are doing.

      Sigh...we tried that at a rescue where I worked and we became the exception that proves the rule. A late gelded appy was ruler of the herd until we rescued a 17 hand thoroughbred gelding who wanted to be boss. The two were fine over the fence for weeks. We added the thoroughbred to the entire herd and the two dominant geldings fought so ferociously that a pony who didn't get out of the way quick enough ended up with a shattered upper leg bone from a kick that meant to kill. He had to be put down on the spot. The two dominant geldings NEVER worked it out. Once while I was on the appy and two friends were trail riding with me, one on the other gelding and the other on a mare, the two buttheads decided to fight just as we were all galloping in a wide open area! If you've never been on the back of a horse while it's fighting another horse then you are lucky! I got a hoof in the head that tore out a chunk of skin and hair. I kept my seat and the horses eventually calmed down but we kept them totally apart after that.

      @@tangosmombell9901 With my two geldings (see comment above), I ultimately had to reconfigure my two groups to let those two be mostly apart from each other. Sad for me because they had at one time been buddies, i.e. when the Paso had been a two year old stallion and the other a gelding. Something definitely went sour between them and never truly healed.

      @@RamonaELawson We were pretty sure that the late gelded appy was actually proud cut. He never lost his stallion crest and would get very excited whenever the mares were in heat. We made a mistake riding the two of them with a mare that was showing signs of being in heat. The other gelding was a hot thoroughbred, and so huge that he had probably been the dominant horse his entire life. The appy was exceptionally smart and often sneaky. Most of the volunteers were afraid of him and he KNEW IT. He was my best buddy after we figured out who was boss, and of course who gave him great scritches and treats. I could ride him bareback with a halter and lead rope when everyone else had major difficulties with saddle and bridle. He liked to sit like a dog so the rider fell off, and he would purposely ride under trees to knock off his rider. There was a reason he was given to the rescue. The thoroughbred, on the other hand, was a dear under saddle, with patience and manners. He was surrendered due to mild laminitis. We used the horses to give therapy riding lessons to handicapped children. The appy was smart enough to behave when the kids were on him, but adults BEWARE! I loved that mean old horse.
