i was a rootes fitter in the 90s the most coming fault. with rootes cars where the petrol tanks was the paint in the tank would peal off and block the fuel lines

Thanks Robert, that's interesting to know. Hopefully the new one will last a while without any issues! Thanks for watching

That is absolutely right, and this was a very elusive and frustrating problem for many. The paint on the interior of the tank would flake as you say. It then obstructed at the bend in the take up pipe in the tank which caused intermittent fuel starvation. This gave absolutely mad and random fault symptoms. Sometimes lean mixture, so hot running. Unpredictable instances of fuel starvation led to roadside assumptions of electrical faults. Evidence of fuel blockage in line, led to many going for unrequired carb rebuilds. In fact, the solution was a quick high pressure air line back down the fuel supply (remove the petrol cap first or you blow the tank) and then fit a filter around the fuel take up, as I believe was fitted as original, certainly on later models. I dread to think how many wasted hours by the roadside were caused by this silly design error! Shame as these are lovely cars, and I have one so I should know!
