    Buy larger than you think you need, it's better to have the option to filter MORE water if needed. In this video she cautions against buying too large because the top reservoir should be filled at least once a day, and if you're not using all the water the filters can be exposed to air too long. The easy solutions around that: All Berkey's use the same size black filter, about 9" tall, so no matter how large Berkey you buy, you don't have to fill it to the brim, just to the top of the filter. I am just 1 person using the IMPERIAL 4.5 Gallon, and if I only fill to the top of the Black Filter it's 3 gallons/ 384oz. The BIG BERKEY filled to the top is 2.5 Gallon because its a smaller circumference. Another step to prevent the filters from drying out before you use the water, is just empty enough water from the bottom reservoir and pour it in the top again to keep the filters primed. Hope that makes sense.

      @@sewgatormomm Glad it helped! An update after 4 months: I LOVE this filter, and I am SO glad I got a larger size. I fill it up every other day and have the system down-pat, it is working flawlessly. I am the only one using it and the size is perfect for me. A friend who got the 'Big Berkey' wishes he got the next size up. . . It also looks amazing in my kitchen. Everyone who tastes the water from this filter is shocked. It makes water delicious.

      @@maha77 Also keep in mind if you plan to use the fluoride filters that go in the bottom portion will displace some space down there giving you less water so another reason for me to get one size bigger than anticipated.

I mean with what’s happening today with the whole SHFT food shortage.. ect ect.. I should stick to water bottle than.. unless I can find a lake close enough to fill it daily..

      I bought one years ago. and I LOVE it. I don't fill up the reservoir once a day or two, I tend to fill up as I go: When I take out 2 cups (or whatever) I directly put in 2 cups. otherwise I forget and then I am out! ha ha. Also I have extra filters (the fluoride/arsenic), which takes up space in the bottom chamber (the reservoir) so it cuts down on how much can be kept in there.
      So I fill up and check how full the bottom chamber is and try to remember how much it took and afterwards, I just refill as I go. For me it is easier, although it would be nice to purchase the outside gauge which tells you how full the chamber is. I bought the travel berkey since I lived overseas a lot and the chambers do nest inside each other making it easy to travel with. Anyway good luck with it.

    A great update to the design would be a 1/2" sleeve attached to the top chamber that overlapped the bottom chamber when assembled. If you use a Berkey with contaminated water outside, there is a good chance you may spill a little when filling the top chamber. As this runs down the outside of the unit the unfiltered water collects in the upward facing joint between the top and bottom creating the distinct possibility that whatever bad stuff is in the unfiltered water could seep in and contaminate your "clean" water. The sleeve would direct any spills over the joint eliminating this problem. Currently, I recommend covering the joint with painter's tape in the field. It blocks the ingress of unfiltered water and easily peels off without leaving any residue.

    This buying option is like buying the size of engine. Your only regret is getting the 4 cylinder. Pick the one you think you need, then choose the next one up. That should be the right decision. I bought the Imperial even though I'm single, because I have dogs and I will drink more water now. The price difference is negligible to bother with a smaller model.

      Eric Williams As a single, I bought the big Berkey and wish I'd bought larger. At least the next size up. Because you'll want to make ice cubes, in addition to cooking and drinking. Plus I agree - it's a good idea to wash foods in the clean water too, especially salad greens. But I love my Berkey! I recommend a stand, a meniscus, and fluoride filters too.

    All you have to do is bottle your water. Put some in the fridge and have some bottled ready for emergencies and just to use. Plastic water jugs like you buy water in at the grocery store work great. Sizing question issue solved. I didn’t get this one tho. I have the AlexaPure, only one filter required, good for up to 5000 gallons. Cheaper too. Check the comparisons of the two models. You’ll see. You can’t go wrong with any of the top 3 but AlexaPure is the best deal for the money and price of replacement filters.

    Why would moving damage the filter? Did you smash it or drop it? Otherwise that does not make sense. It seems not very good that the company does NOT include red dye nor the blue rubber faucet attachment in order to more easily fill the top vessel. So expensive that the quality stainless filter should just be part of the system. Sorry but that's the way we see it. They are very, very expensive also the company if they really cared about he water quality should have silver inside the filters so this will keep the bacteria down. I know this to be true with my research and study. I feel if we don't say it these companies just get more greedy and less caring about the health of their customers. We should all ask these questions. Also you NEED to buy the glass see through measure that goes on the outside so you can see how much water is left. These extras should be part of the unit, You know it.

    Hello, If I incorporate the fluoride filters in the Berky, will that displace the water area in the bottom container? Also are the fluoride filters made of plastic? That might not be agreeable if folks don't want their plastic filters sitting in the filtered water.

    • @narlycharley
      @narlycharley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are made of #5 plastic, yes. The plastic that the inert water is sitting in is minuscule compared to where your tap water goes/what it touches before it gets to your tap.

      Yes. All stainless steel Berkeys use the same filters. However, due to increasingly frequent quality control issues with Black Berkey elements since August 2021, for which Berkey took no responsibility, we have stopped buying/selling Berkey products. We now sell Coldstream FTO+ ceramic gravity filters, a superior product made in the UK that fits in Berkey systems, to our Berkey customers who need replacement filters for their Berkey. Too bad that the stands that Berkey are selling are so insanely overpriced. $38 for a little bit of wielded wire stainless steel? no thanks, I already paid enough for the two stainless steel "barrels" where the filters get screwed into in order to turn them from $20 worth of stainless steel canisters into a filtration system!
    Nice system, but I think that charging a customer who already invested several hundreds into the filtration system almost $40 for a little stand is greedy
