When it comes to the Tesla Model 3, it doesn’t get any better than the Model 3 Performance. The question is, how much difference do you get in performance between the new and old editions?
When you look at the stats, you might find this an odd drag race. Because even though these are two different editions of the same car, their stats are seemingly identical! They’re both powered by dual electric motors, and they both produce 457hp & 660Nm.
Not only that, but they both weigh 1844kg, and they both cost just over £56,000 when new!

I recommend switching sides for drag race and doing two runs or three, especially during rainy/damp days. The level of dampness could differ between the two sides and can really affect results especially if the two cars are about neck and neck, like this one.

It's all about reaction time, nothing else. When you watch the start sequences in slow motion, the old model always took off a little earlier than the new model. You should have swapped the drivers of the cars for a real comarison.
But still interesting to see how close they both are

@Do One I have the especially reliable 2015, and there isn't meaningful winter where I live on the Central California coast. I have heard they are unreliable in actual winter weather though

In 2019 the model 3 performance was £52k, through 2020 it was roughly 55-56, After march 2021 they were £59k due to EV grant removal. We kept a track of prices for company car leases on the LR. And kept an eye on the prices for SR+ and performance for information on the trend of cost.

Performance should be the same. The advantage with the new car is with efficiency and a few upgrades. For instance, the new Model 3 comes with a heat pump that warms up the battery and the cabin quicker than the old car. The new car also comes with a power trunk, heated steering wheel and redesigned center console....all for the same price as the old car. I would buy the new one in a heartbeat...and of course, swap the tires out ;)
Mostly true but the performance isn't the same! The weight of the wheels will affect it as well as tyres. The heat pump is much more efficient but is actually slower to heat up than the resistive type in the old car

The coolest thing about this is how stable and secure the Teslas are behaving. If you look at drag races with various Supercars, getting them to keep going straight is often a big challenge. The Model 3 Performance seems so easy to handle that Matt is doing it with one hand while looking out of the side window...😇

What was the total battery usage after all these races (new vs. old)?
WOT uses about 1500wh/mi compared to about 300wh/mi at highway speeds. So drag races uses about 5x’s the power. Probably similar to gas cars.

P zeros are better on dry roads and PS4s a much better in damp conditions so yeah, that's why the old one won the drag..
No they're not. The Michelins are better in the wet and dry. I've tried both and the PS4s I have on my current car are better in all conditions compared to P Zeros.

A bit about the tyres because that was the main factor here;
The new Pirelli’s are the same size, BUT have a completely different profile. The tread in contact with the road is 2cm narrower than on the Michelin’s, per tyres! So that’s 8cm less contact...
This does the performance on a cold damp runway no good as you can see...
Reason? More aerodynamic and with less road rolling resistance, more economical in theory... 💁♂️
I’d rather the Michelin grip myself!
As for high speed performance difference... well there seems to be a slight advantage to the older 75kwh pack, in these temperatures, at the moment. The new battery pack I think they are still learning and tweaking the software. I think cold weather performance in particular is still being enhanced. As always, an over the air software update will probably change it one day... 💁♂️

The differences in acceleration are so small, that the driver's reaction at the start and different tires play the biggest role.

Matt or Carwow, do Carwow quarter mile times include the 1 foot NHRA rollout? Or do you always have a second person (camera man) in the cars that are raced? The Tesla Model 3 Performance seems to always run the quarter in 11.7-11.8. I own a Model 3 Performance and have been able to run the quarter in 11.4 to 11.5 (with rollout) by myself, and only run 11.7s (with rollout) if another adult person is in the car with me. I realize this race was on damp pavement, but other races with the Model 3 P have been run on dry pavement and the times are always pretty much the same.

I think the reason why new model 3 is slightly slower is because of the tires. The new model 3s have all season tires while the older ones had summer tires.
