My grandpa was a tall man, all hands and feet. He was an orphan and grew up in Worcester about 50 miles from Montagu, South Africa. As a kid I spent quite a few years there, so I know the area quite well. I can't recall why grandpa said he made that trip on his bicycle, but he did tell us about this one time he tried to return from Montagu with two watermelons - one of which he tied to the luggage basket at the back, and the other one somehow wrapped in a blanket and balanced on the bicycle frame in front of him. But just where this video of David Kramer starts, right there at this makeshift tunnel carved out of raw stone, is where things went wrong. The watermelon in the front slipped out of it's sling, and grandpa lost his balance and went down a little ravine. He lost both fruit, but he managed to save himself and the bike, and made it back to Worcester despite all his cuts and bruises. The thing however is that grandpa Koos and his cousin Gawie later on married two sisters. And uncle Gawie also had a funny story about a bicycle trip. Apparently in his youth he was a delivery boy for the local butcher. But then he met my grandma's sister and nothing could stop him. There was this long weekend coming up and he had to see this girl again. She unfortunately lived quite far away and his only form of transportation was the delivery bike belonging to the butcher. He was young and in love, and nothing could stop him. But the roads were bad and he had one flat after another. Finally he ran out of patches and solution, so out of desperation he had to cut the inner tube in two and tie the ends with his shoe laces. That only lasted so long, so what now? Out of desperation he approached a farmer who agreed to lend him his donkey. After he returned they could sort things out. And so he made it to his sweetheart. Well, he lost his job but he did get the girl. They got married and loved each other until the very end. And so did my grandpa and grandma. ❤️❤️❤️
