Mao's last dancer: Alondra de la Parra cooks dumplings with Li Cunxin

Li Cunxin, born in 1961 in Qingdao, China, is known as Mao's last dancer because he was discovered as a ballet dancer during the Cultural Revolution launched by Mao Zedong (1893 - 1976). Li Cunxin's autobiography and also a biopic by Hollywood director Bruce Beresford is called "Mao's last dancer."
Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra meets Li Cunxin during his production of the ballet "Romeo and Juliet" by Sergei Prokofiev at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane. They cook dumplings and talk about Li Cunxin's life.
Li Cunxin grew up as the sixth of seven sons of a poor farming family in eastern China. During the Cultural Revolution in China, he was discovered by chance by talent scouts for the Beijing Dance Academy, where he lived and trained in strict discipline for seven years.
At the age of 18, as part of the political rapprochement between the United States and the People's Republic of China, he was invited to the USA by the artistic director of the Houston Ballet, Ben Stevenson. Li remained in Houston and danced for the Houston Ballet for 14 years. He then worked as a stockbroker until he was appointed Artistic Director of the Queensland Ballet in 2012.
