I seen him win that race at Daytona. Big Block Chevy in a Ford Pinto body car. I believe the Modifieds were turning faster laps than the cup cars did. I least it sure felt like they did. Richie Evans was truly the best ever in Modifieds. That is a huge claim because there were a lot of great drivers in that class. Thank you for this video.
I was at Middletown NY for a dirt race and Roger phelps stopped me in the pits and told me Richie Evans was killed , my heart stopped as loved watching him race when I was a kid and always kept track of him , how he was doing , the man was awesome!
Richie Evans was the greatest NASCAR modified driver of all time without even the slightest bit of doubt. I used to watch Richie at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta,NY way back when it was a NASCAR sanctioned track. Richie grew up only about 90 minutes from me so he was always my favorite driver in the NASCAR Modified Division. Jumpin Jack Johnson was always my favorite dirt track racer
As a Southern boy.... was disheartening for the North drivers to always come down here to Martinsville and Wilkesboro and run off with the trophies. Richie was one of the best. When they said Evans was going into the Hall.... I didn't think 'Who is that'.... I thought....THERE is a deserving Champion. RIP Richie from Rome.
Greg Brown I'm from Rome. You ask who he is around here maybe 5% of people know. I went down south told them I was from Rome the automatically said where Richie lived. Made me feel good and sad at the same time that the home town people don't know but southerners loved him.
Listen to his family and one of his pit crew guys reminisce about that day, they all say Richie was acting strange, not in so many words, but they were hinting Richie Evans committed suicide.
