What he was getting at re "amateurs" is that many SF writers -- young and old -- get so excited about Hollywood -- about "just being noticed" -- that they let themselves be taken advantage of. They don't demand the amount of money they deserve, or they let themselvs sign a weak contract -- that is the very definition of "amateur." You see?
Actually, the opposite seems true. Our dominant social order is still ruled by corrupt, wealthy white men who fear the popular will and seek to entrench power. I feel like Harlan's writings, his speeches, and his publishings are just as, if not more, relevant today as they were back in the 60's and 70's. Yes, it is possible and encouraged nowadays to push the envelope and be outrageous, but to do that with intellect and a deep insightful reflection upon modern society seems just as radical today as it was here when Harlan was speaking. I feel that if we could get modern school kids to read "Again Dangerous Visions or "Strange Wine", they would be just as blown away by the power and perception therein, if not more so, as past readers were.
No, he's "ranting" about expecting to be paid for services rendered as a professional writer. How is that "all about money?" Harlan Ellison has been writing since the 1950's and one of his personal -- and admirable -- endeavors has been to see that creative people are paid for their work. Look into the history of SF writers and TV/Movies, and you'll see how they've been ripped off, their work "borrowed," numerous times. That's the background and context to his "rant."
This sounds extremely spurious, that's not the way Harlan works. You might have heard something about the vast problems with The Last Dangerous Visions, where as it looks like it will never see print, some writers want their story back -- but that's an entirely different issue.
Interesting that atheists, who reject the idea of sin, are insistent we atone for their interpretive "sins" of the past. I suppose this is to deflect responsibility or acknowledgement of their personal sins, or the involvement of people of their own ilk. Harlan was always preoccupied with the evil white man stealing the black man's heritage (which is about as meaningless phrase as can be uttered) while embracing the party and people who propagated it: Democrats, liberals, Arabs/Muslims. It's difficult and hypocritical to hold the moral high ground when your foundation of such is as fluid and shallow as a one-inch slab of concrete which never dries and which you glide from one end to the next, pushed by the winds of the day's New York Times editorial.
Christians never had a monopoly on morality. You're just proving why you've become irrelevant with the same tired, old, cliche sophistry that has already been debunked a million times over a hundred years ago.
Who lot of projection and strawman arguments here. Things truly never changed, you guys pick one talking head whether it be buckley or peterson and repeat him verbatim.
RIP Young Harlan Ellison you would've loved AO3
He drops Ursula K. le Guin. He's got good taste!
Back to work writers!!
Great to see this in 16:9 format, too. It doesn't look cropped.
Watching this again for probably the last time.
Yeah, he's a little pompous, but ground breaking, philosophically well informed, morally well intentioned, and a hell of a lot of fun to read.
agreed

"almost every chick in Las Angeles is into astrology" The more things change the more they stay the same.
the intervier it was putted later.. :)
Its fascinating to see how much of what Ellison is talking about seems so radical then is now pretty much part of the dominate social order now.

few people can talk for about 8 hours straight in a single stream of consciousness like Harlan could...Christ.
It must be exhausting to have his mind 😂
The older guy in the tan jacket asking Harlan questions has a natural Steven Hawking voice.
he still hasn't released the 3rd Dangerous Visions
and he never will

And you are basing this statement on what precisely?

Did he moonlight as Phil Specter?
@Evan Hodge Do you have a full-time gig as a feminine napkin?
