Unfortunately I don't have any contact with this beautiful creature any more. I was just looking after him for a week. I had to give him back at a key time in his development, and I had to move away, so I only had the chance to spend a couple more hours with him about a month later. It would have been so rewarding to teach and learn with him even further. I really miss him!
On the 23rd our boy will be old enough to come home. He is Shepherd/white Sib. Husky cross. Right now he still looks a little like a mini polar bear! Lol! I hope to get his tricks going as well as this as soon as he settles in. Im sorry you didnt get to spend more time with that little handsome boy. He is adorable.
It's really not difficult. These dogs are intelligent and need to be challenged, physically and mentally. It is really important to not rush it. Patience and a calm, assertive (Cesar knows best) manner is the key. Start slowly and don't expect too much too soon. 20 minutes is long enough before the dog (and you!) get frustrated. My first 20 minutes with him was just me trying to get him to take a treat only when I allowed it. He rushed forward every time and snapped it up before I was able to even get to a verbal or visual command! The next session was about 4 hours later and he got it straight away. Never lose your calm and never show signs of disappointment or frustration in your tone or body language. Make sure that you teach in stages, lock in each "trick" before trying a new one. It's not about the tricks anyway, it's about developing a good communication and understanding with you and your dog. If you look at my other video of us, it doesn't look so impressive, but when you know that when I first met him, he would circle me, panting, jump up and paw me, and then wolf it down in 2 gulps, you can see the change is drastic. It took me 4 days to get to this stage. He isn't even my dog, I was looking after him for a week as his owner was away on business. It was one of the most special times of my life. I was really sad when I had to give him back! I really miss him and wonder how he developed in the year since I have been away from him.
If you can, video the very beginning when it's all going wrong! It's the one thing I should have done to really show the progress and potential of these amazing dogs. Oh, and your looks adorable! Good luck!
Karl Wright Hold the treat in your closed fist and hold it near her nose. Simply lower your hand to the floor and she will follow. You can give her a push down on the shoulders if she stays standing, or even slowly and carefully, pull her front paws forward. Of course this should be done in an extremely gentle manner, don't ever force anything and make sure the dog is enjoying the experience. Don't forget, the dog has no idea what 'sit', 'stay', 'down' or any other command means until it learns to associate it with the action you require. Also, always use a visual cue with the word. A couple of days after I did this video, he could do all these tricks without me saying a word, just by watching my hand movement. I always praise vocally and with touch, though. It is important to always reward success (even accidental!) so the dog sees it as a game. I envy you, it is such a rewarding and fun time as your dog is developing. Have fun.
They are so good! He looks exactly like mine at the same age.
A beautiful good boy.

Also, this is NOT how a service dog is trained to alert one to their seizures.
