I could see my dad limbering up when my son LOUDLY whispered to his pals "You better take your hat off before the flag gets here or my grandpa will thump you in the back of the head. It hurts too." I didn't know it was possible for an old man to look both proud and a little disappointed at the same time, but both boys quickly removed their "cover".

We were at a parade that kicked off our county fair. My son and a couple of his friends, about 13 y/o were sitting on the curb in front of us. As always, the first to pass was a military band with flag corp in front. When the flag approached, everyone stood, all the men and my son took off their hats. I could see my dad limbering up when my son LOUDLY whispered to his pals "You better take your hat off before the flag gets here or my grandpa will thump you in the back of the head. It hurts too." I didn't know it was possible for an old man to look both proud and a little disappointed at the same time, but both boys quickly removed their "cover".
