#JJK271 I have waited for a while now to talk about modern shonen manga and anime. Keep this in I mind my video is more of a discussion with storytelling and writing.
Shonen jumps biggest problem is their ridiculous weekly schedule these new gen mangaka can’t keep up and as a result a quickly rushing to finish their mangas both DS n JJK should have had Big 3/DB levels of staying power in talking 10 to 20 years but instead these stories feel rushed full of answered questions and terrible world building it’s pretty obvious the schedule is THE biggest issue
Newer Shonen are very nihilistic in their approach to storytelling. For one, their protagonists have a lot less agency about what's happening in the plot. They just react to what's happened to them accordingly. Shonen is currently treading the same path that superhero comic books did in the 90s. The previous generation was so optimistic and campy. Now everything is predictable and by the numbers when it comes to storytelling. I feel newer shonens lack something. It's like they become old really quick. The only recent exception for me would be Frieren.
@@pseudopanda2538 Nihalism in stories lead you to the comic crash of the 90s and manga might not be in that position yet it, that formula needs to change now otherwise once one piece is ended the downward trend will happen
Same here because there was so much quality series in 1980 to 2000 that era. There were so many titles and good stories from that decade. That remained timeless.
I agree that the mutant liberation story was rushed but disagree that its wasn't set up, horikoshi has been setting it up, from the creature rejection clan, to subtle moments like Todoroki calling the dog captain a mutt, to gang orca being the most villainous looking hero. all those moments indicated a discrimination to mutant quirks.
We did get hints of discrimination, but those were small instances before this arc happened. Sure we haven't seen a Mutant Discrimination focused arc yet but the fact that we have seen 2 main characters show some form of prejudice against Mutants no matter how mild should just show it is not something small. We've got mentions and a few brief visuals to indicate this is something that exists in-universe. but that's it. However, this subplot ends up existing in a sore range between forget-ability and proper exploration. This subplot just lacks the detail to provide a compelling analysis on discrimiantion.
@@pseudopanda2538 Yes it needed more time and attention, but these are the draw backs of rushing to complete your story, which is a shame cause i have faith that old horikoshi would have done a much better job, hell he dedicated a whole arc to saving a little girls spirit.
The Overhaul arc was built up from beginning to end because Horikoshi put a lot of focus on Eri's depression. I read his previous works, not saying that he is bad at writing. I feel like the discrimination plot could've been used to explore so much of society. The problem is the execution and the stories message on discrimination. Since it was rushed out since Horikoshi was running out of time and couldn't fulfill it.
@pseudopanda2538 Not necessarily, but when you brought up how Shonen works these days are rushed and half-baked, you had MHA in the background at the time, which makes it seem like you're putting MHA in that group.
Couldn’t be my goat chainsawman😂

Overreliance on Power-Ups,
Lack of Character Depth,
Excessive Fan Service, Predictable Plots, and Cliche Tropes are what’s hurting shonen mangas

@@pseudopanda2538Frieren is not a Jump manga though so it can avoid those pitfalls. Nor is it a battle manga
@@Ash_Wen-li I never said Frieren was in Jump.
One Piece still peak.
Bad endings are the norm in serialized works including TV shows and novels. This isn't a problem exclusive to modern shonen.
Yeah I am sticking to older Shounen from 80-2000's

1:05 There is no way you're saying MHA is half-baked and rushed.

MHAs sin is that it’s mid and abandoned the academia part of it immediately.
@oboe23able The only sin here is that god awful take
