I'm not a Bruins fan, but in fairness, i think the Bruins player thought the Capitals player was gonna go to the boards, but instead of hit the brakes, and Bruins player had no choice but to bump into him, and yea it was a shove but I don't think he was planning to hit him from behind, it's a bit far away from the boards.
I get why it's major, but I honestly don't think he wanted to hit him in such a way. Fehervary decided to hit the brakes, but wasn't strong enough and fell over. It's a really dangerous play of course, and the major is prolly the right call, but all the players have to be responsible, and Fehervary decided to do something really, really risky, did it wrong, and failed miserably. So I get why it's a major, but it's not only on Wahlstorm
Not a Bruins fan….. not a Caps fan….. looked to me like the Washington skate got stuck, and then kind of helped catapult him at the same time he was getting pushed. the push didn’t seem to be hard enough to throw him like that….look at his skate dig into the ice in real time.
it sure looks like Fehervary did that to himself by trying to kick the puck. Guys lean on eachother going to the boards like that a hundred times a game. he just caught an edge
Minor at best. Feverery’s awkward and ill timed inside edge stop/puck kick was what lost him stability, slowed him into Wahlstrom, and put himself in a dangerous position.
Ollie! Definitely deserves to wear black & gold. Not a puck watcher. (But don't do this again.) Everybody's okay. They sent Feverery to the school nurse, took his temperature and sent the boy back to class. Maybe don't try to manipulate the puck with your skate while you're flying toward the boards, son.
I hate the Bruins as much as anyone (outside Beantown) but it looked to be an instinctive move to get the Cap off the puck. Nothing nefarious. The proximity to the boards and the speed going in were a factor. The fact that the Cap’s face was bloodied factored into the call on the ice. I would guess if DOPS looks at this, I would expect at most a fine.
"It's not a hit at the numbers", maybe not, but it is a push straight at the numbers in high speed towards the boards..... Dangerous still, and there is gonna be many injuries if the outcome would only be 2min suspensions... The refs got this one right.
@@Florysilv how do you figure? "Far" (~8' away) from the boards means the player being hit is in a vulnerable position. If you're near the boards, you're less likely to go head first into them.
Definitely worthy of a 2 minute minor but not a major. Yes it was a dangerous area of the ice but it was compounded by the Capitals guy trying to play the puck with his skate. That caused him to be off balance when he got hit. Also, injury should never play into the justification for a call. Either the hit is illegal or it isn’t.
I think in this case the injury supports keeping the major penalty as opposed to the injury dictating whether the hit is penalty-worthy or not. Similar to how they would check for blood on high sticking calls to determine 2 or 5. The contact with the boards is elemental to this call. I would not have anticipated the player reaching the boards without the drastic change to the right.
@tubelooker71 Ah but that is the exact wrong logic. Same issue with the high stick. Just because blood is drawn means 4 minutes is bad logic as it has no actual relationship to the intensity of the high stick. It has a perceived relationship, but one that has so many exceptions as to not be accurate.
Boarding is tricky because your constantly in those awkward positions, vulnerable to injuries, that one wasn't crazy hard but the angle and going in headfirst can cause injury.
Boston fan here. Its a major. Dangerous distance from the boards, too much force, too high. That said, if you go frame by frame, Fehervary did use his legs in an awkward way. He played the puck with his foot and after doing so tries to recover and does toe pick. Which is exactly why the rule changed from "into the boards" to "distance from the boards." Honestly its insane that Fehervary returns to the game at all without injury based on the way his leg bends.
@Bruins-vq5ey The whole team sucked. Johnson never got a fair opportunity. Only got 9 games between two different coaching systems. He was never going to be a high scoring player for the Bruins but could have provided depth scoring.
Not a penalty at all. Now I hate Boston a lot, but the defender was stopping... Whalstrom kept going... it wasn't a hit or push... defender caught an edge.

That penalty was given based on the outcome which I always have hated. some high sticks have been hard whacks but dont draw any blood so its only 2? same thing here, he got cut on the nose so its a 5? defenseman shouldn't be hitting the breaks there, its 2 mins at most......but the puck dont lie

No way is that a major. If you "have" to call a penalty there, then call a 2 minute boarding penalty. I mean what do you expect the Bruins forechecker to do there? There was no icing on the play so you expect him to give up positioning there and let the Capitals gain possession to avoid the contact altogether?
The straight arm push into the boards is still boarding, Wahlstrom DID'NT have "positioning" as he was trailing the puck and the defenseman into the corner and used his arm to try to knock Fehervary off the puck going into the boards. That is the reason the ref's blew the whistle! If Wahlstrom had a functioning brain, he would have waited for Fehervary to touch the puck AND be closer to the boards. THEN you can chose a body (or stick) check to the side of the player the puck was on - so you are not boarding, and you can attempt to gain control of the puck in the offensive zone!
"There was no icing on the play so you expect him to give up positioning there" Wahlstrom has no positioning there. You're not in position to hit when you're right behind a player. Unless Wahlstrom puts himself in a good position where he's not hitting/pushing the numbers, he can't follow through on that one. That should be 5 every time, IMO. However... The way the league standard is on this hits, I don't disagree with the 2 minute call. I think that's a stupid standard, but it's still the standard as it currently exists.

I'm going to paraphrase a bit, but the NHL considers a hit or push that causes a player to go dangerously or violently into the boards eligible for a boarding penalty.
