  • Seaside Antium, less than 40 miles from Rome, was the birthplace of emperors Caligula and Nero. Nero celebrated his birthplace by building over the Augustan villa to make a massive domicile, akin to his Domus Aurea in Rome, stretching 800 meters across cliffs overlooking the sea. We'll examine the ruins atop the cliffs as well as from down below on the beach. Nero also created a massive 1/2 mile wide artificial port, the remains of which we can view from the beach and the air!

A recreation of what this structure looked like originally, would be interesting and informative.

The Roman Emperor's must have loved being right on the beach. There isn't anything more soothing than sea air and the sounds of the ocean.

In "QVO VADIS" Nero mentioned that he was moving the court to Antium (in summer) if I recall correctly.

Considero la FANCIULLA DI ANZIO la più bella statua del periodo ellenistico giunta fino a noi perché è immune dagli eccessivi restauri che caratterizzano la Nike di Samotracia e la Venere di Milo. Grazie per il video.

Thanks Darius! We have added Nero’s villa to our list of places to visit once in Italy again. Really interesting connection to recent history with the Anzio beachhead landing as well.
Will you be doing a video on Tiberius’ villa on Capri?
    Look forward to next video!

Thank you very much for this educational video. Once again you teach us plenty. (I had no idea that landing point of Anzio was the same as Antium. Somehow i never made the easy connection in my mind. Duhhh. Thank you Darius. May I ask how much of the ancient structures were destoyed by the landing?

That is a great question- I've seen some footage-- but as you can see from the video these core villa section was mostly spared.

Has anybody tried to map the water color onto excavated features of the palace? Would be cool to see maps side by side. I tried to check if somebody has done a VR recreation but all Google throws up are visualizations of what Nero built in Rome. Maybe material for a future short video?

Thank you for this fascinating video! Knowing what ocean water can do, it's amazing that the bricks and mortar have lasted so long. I doubt whether this much of our culture will still exist 2000 years from now. And, partying with Caligula or Nero, er, no thanks. 🏛
