"O land of joy and beauty, where shamrock holds the sway, And tinkers fight with madness, whilst tramps sleep out in hay. Thy land hath many wondrous charms to please the weary eyes, But there are some who really try thy freedom to despise. O land of faith and legend, in this world oft are few Who carry out the works of Christ, some seldom really do. If all but sought to serve him, this world could surely be, A land of saints and scholars, and joyful harmony” O pray for me dear Ireland and all thy beggers too, Who roam about from town to town, but Holy men are few. Alas this world is weary, of sin beyond repair, Except by meditation, on sin beyond compare."
It would be so very worth putting this bard up for a few nights and keeping him content with food and drink to hear his poems, stories and philosophy. To think back when I was a kid my parents would put ramblers up for a few nights, have them do some work around the place, get their clothes washed and bellies filled plus a little money in their pocket along with some motherly advice. Everyone of them had an interesting, if sometimes sad, story to tell. That was a trusting era back then. My grandparents did that, too. I would be afraid to do it nowadays.
My nanny was from north of Ireland ,she used tell me stories of her mother hiding solider ones that either running away from the English army and even some IRA guys would hide out in the cattle shed she would feed them but wouldn't let them in the house in case she get in trouble , ppl were slot more trust worthy back then ,my nanny had some great stories from her.childhood and yong woman years her childhood it was real little house on the prairie type shit ,or at least that's what I pictured when she tell me about using a pall going to school climbing tree,s an collecting eggs on way to school using a horse and suki to get around , really seem like a simpler time

As a child if we ever met a Wanderer we always stopped to listen & chat & give what was needed ie go home & look later for the Wanderer to give some food or blanket etc always interesting to listen to & a free spirit that was so calming . Very Intelligent people that just want to live freely with nature . Always highly respected & known in the area Willy the tramp as the Wanderer was known & often seen outside the Convent . The Nuns always looked after Willy the tramp .
What a very fine wise traveling poet/bard, wandering mystery Englishman, I wish that I had met with this Bright Light, tis highly articulate man on my travels near and far. Don't you call this man a tramp he was one of God's very special messengers, He is completely correct about the people in the West. Ireland, Wales, Scotland & England are the poorer because this man no longer waders down the roads, byways and streets to tell his poems, rhymes and his stories

Naw. He said Christmas shouldn't be a time to look forward to getting drunk and indulging in gluttony but rather that it's a time to remember the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. Sure he drank but he well knew the reason for the season.

Such a free spirit, he had little but was rich in spirit.
De velara was right in his 1943 speech that it was a worry that irish would lose their spirit for material gain. It has come to pass

He had the wisdom of the world and the freedom of his mind.
There is always a level of Irishness higher than I previously thought.
I like watching these old Irish characters they are fast disappearing nowadays though.
By the end of the 70s most of these characters were gone - old Ireland was gone. This wandering bard was British, probably English.
