CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Moe Greene (Alex Rocco) threatens Michael (Al Pacino). Michael warns his brother Fredo (John Cazale) to never take sides against him...ever.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Popularly viewed as one of the best American films ever made, the multi-generational crime saga The Godfather is a touchstone of cinema: one of the most widely imitated, quoted, and lampooned movies of all time. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino star as Vito Corleone and his youngest son, Michael, respectively. It is the late 1940s in New York and Corleone is, in the parlance of organized crime, a "godfather" or "don," the head of a Mafia family. Michael, a free thinker who defied his father by enlisting in the Marines to fight in World War II, has returned a captain and a war hero. Having long ago rejected the family business, Michael shows up at the wedding of his sister, Connie (Talia Shire), with his non-Italian girlfriend, Kay (Diane Keaton), who learns for the first time about the family "business." A few months later at Christmas time, the don barely survives being shot by gunmen in the employ of a drug-trafficking rival whose request for aid from the Corleones' political connections was rejected. After saving his father from a second assassination attempt, Michael persuades his hotheaded eldest brother, Sonny (James Caan), and family advisors Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Sal Tessio (Abe Vigoda) that he should be the one to exact revenge on the men responsible. After murdering a corrupt police captain and the drug trafficker, Michael hides out in Sicily while a gang war erupts at home. Falling in love with a local girl, Michael marries her, but she is later slain by Corleone enemies in an attempt on Michael's life. Sonny is also butchered, having been betrayed by Connie's husband. As Michael returns home and convinces Kay to marry him, his father recovers and makes peace with his rivals, realizing that another powerful don was pulling the strings behind the narcotics endeavor that began the gang warfare. Once Michael has been groomed as the new don, he leads the family to a new era of prosperity, then launches a campaign of murderous revenge against those who once tried to wipe out the Corleones, consolidating his family's power and completing his own moral downfall. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and winning for Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay, The Godfather was followed by a pair of sequels.

Fredo seems like a nice fellow. Hopefully he learned from his mistake and never takes sides against the family again.
And he's still alive, and Michael's mind is as healthy as it was when he was just the war hero.
YOU BROKE MY HEART.
😅
Well, he is dead. So...no.
Yeah, about that...you probably shouldn't watch part 2.
I always liked how MICHAEL stayed so focused. He didn't allow women, men, drinking or anything to disrupt his plan and/or purpose.
I like that too. He was so disciplined.
shortyjo He was a Marine.
Jada Parks Or eating, for that matter. I noticed that Michael is rarely, if ever, seen eating anything after he ascends to power. Perhaps a slice of cake at Roth's birthday party, but that's it.
***** As a man protecting his family.
But he lost his family in the prcess...what did Vito always say .." a man is not a man without his family " mike was too much a business man..
Al Pacino played 4 characters in the Godfather trilogy
1. Civilian Michael distant from his family
2. Conflicted son willing to protect his father
3. Stone cold tyrant trying to preserve the empire his family built
4. Weathered tycoon searching for peace after decades of mental torture and stress
Incredible performance
The last performance in part three was not on the level with parts one and two. I hate to say it but I believe part three was a directorial misstep. It was good in parts but overall it’s a failure.
Facts lol
And served in the Military
1st is more like Solider returning to his distant family
@@illwitness a failure? It's still a good movie. It was nominated for a whole bunch of academy awards, including best picture.
There were things critics complained about at the time, Pacino wasn't one of them.
That last part where he says “ever”, you can feel the rage he has but he still has a calm demeanor. Such great acting
I heard it as I saw your comment
Michael’s mood changes when he hears that Mo Green straightened Fredo out. At this point after the hurt he’s suffered to his family, Vito, Sonny, Apollonia, his emotions switch with Mo Green. Before that moment it’s only business, after that it’s personal 🥶
Chef kiss
That's about as nice as you'll Michael. Mo's luck he lives that night.
I think he says NEVER... "Ever" would have another meaning, like 'some time'

"You straightened my brother out?"
This is the moment he should have realised that shutting up was a good idea.
Was sad when he killed him later.
@@kiwin9488 Yeah. Had him shot in the eye as well.
Yeah i wouldn’t like it if some schmuck told me that about my brother either
That “I’m Moe Greene....” line was too good not to say though, almost worth it.
He's MOE GREEN. you dont shut him up, he shuts you up
I love how when Mo Green brought up talking to Barzini, Michael immediately changed the subject and focused on Fredo. He didn’t want Mo to realize he made a costly mistake. He sided with the enemy and conspired against the Corleone Family. Beautiful way to utilize smokescreens to throw your enemy off the scent. Jesus what a masterpiece.
💙💙💙
U wot m8?
no Mo Green knows he's in trouble, first when Michael reminds him that the Corleones bankrolled the casino, knowing that Michael and maybe other families suspect him of skimming (like Bugsy Siegel) and Michael is genuinely trying to muscle him out or worse, he nervously straightens his tie. he doesn't realize what a mistake it is to mention that he talked to Barzini, but as soon as Michael says "is that why you slapped my brother around" he realizes that word is somehow getting to Michael and New York. meaning he is screwed lol, since "straightening out" the son of a don is already a punishable offense. so he tries to minimize it and even Fredo knows enough to try and come to his aid, and then try to get Tom to fix it.
Darth Vader: I spoke to barzini
Never interrupt your enemy when there making a mistake
“You don’t come to Las Vegas and talk to a man like Moe Green like that!”
That’s why Michael is the don and Fredo is just the older brother.
It's interesting that in no conversations does The Don ever mention or even remotely consider Fredo as management. It's Santino and Michael
@@mlauren629 His father knew he was a lost cause. Even when talking to Micahel, he went on what his expectations were for Michael and Sonny but when he brought up Fredo, he couldn't even finish, he just sorta shrugged, clearly washing his hands on any hopes for him.
Michael was also the one who came up with a plan to kill a police captain that even Sonny thought was untouchable.
In fact, Fredo was no brother at all. He sold his family so that he could make some money on his own.
@@joannapebbleworthy9343 I agree..fredo did go against the family..

@@thecutter199 Sorry, my mistake! I have seen all the movies, last time was in the '90s. I was somehow convinced that this scene was from Godfather 2, even when they talked about Barzini I should have realized. I just came for the awesome last line by Al Pacino.
I think Fredo was supposed to answer Mike, - “why didn’t you asked me first prior to that meeting? May be that deal is not in my interest. You have to negotiate with me first, and then make your plans”
Pacino's eyes go stone cold..Is what makes his portrayal so scary.
Absolutely, when he stares at Manny before shooting him in Scarface..gives me chills every time. There is no emotion whatsoever.
The actor that played Fredo was amazing in this scene. So completely believable. The subtleties…the gestures…the inflection and tone….that’s acting.
The great John Cazale a true legend

"You straightened my brother out?" One the the best and chilling lines in whole trilogy.
You should've listened to your brother, Fredo. He knows it was you. You broke his heart.
I've always wondered why Moe's voice changes when he says "I talked to Barzini"
@@markcadieux3445

Mark Cadieux I caught that too!!! Wondered that as well!
Between listening to my brother and banging cocktail waitresses two at the time? ???
@Red Dead hollering and screaming 😂😂😭
Pachino was on another level playing Michael. These movies are national treasures
Pacino
Sicilian treasure?
World treasures
@BlackMinkCoat part 3 was a cash grab, even Coppola admitted it and that’s why it took the studio years to talk him into doing it. Like when they tried to do a matrix sequel. It should have never happened.
National?
“You straightened my brother out?!”
That terrifying whisper growl pretty much set Moe’s fate he’s a dead man walking
Nah, I think once he gave the reason, Michael seemed to think "He does have a point..." so he goes back to the price for the casino. If Moe gave a reasonable offer, I think he would have been fine. Reasonable offer would have to be something below the market value, not the kind of money Moe would have felt he had to take from anyone.
1:04 "You straightened my brother out." There's so much menace and power in his voice. He singlehandedly proves you don't have to shout to be heard, and you don't have to be physically impressive to be intimidating.
fredo was defending moe like a battered wife..smfh
+Ignacio Varga You've got a good point there. While working under Moe Greene he may feel that he had the status that he'd never have in New York. Also, Michael could have understood how angry Moe Greene to a degree. The Cocktail Waitresses weren't working, the Customers went to other casinos so lost profit was an issue. I'd be so embarrassed if My Brother found out about my Sexual Proclivities in front of everyone.
Vito would've violently shaken and slapped him like he did Fontane lol
You mean Connie?
An attack on Fredo was an attack on the Corleone family name. Moe had to get killed.
thats still not a very good reason to slap a mafia's son, in fact I cant think of any
Sad when little brother has to act like the eldest, and big brother is doing the opposite.
I can relate. Too well.
That's how it went down in my family. My older brother was the lazy, alcoholic, dope head college dropout. I was 5 years younger, 100 pounds lighter. I was sober, drug free, college graduate, professional career, married with children, and 30 year mortgage.
@@paulleckner8235 Man, you were just waiting for an opportunity like this to flex in the comments lmao
@@getschwifty9531 Yup!
That was me growing up. My older brother took no interest in leading the family (Jacob-Esau type of rivalry), dropped out of college, and ended up working in low income jobs. I had no choice but to step up to the plate and lead the family.
The way Al Pacino delivered the line "You straightened my brother out?" should've won an Oscar alone.
OMG yes. And the editing that put just a second's extra pause before he says it.
Goosebumps every time
Micheal: Don't ever take sides with anyone against the family.
Fredo: Takes sides with anyone against the family.
I'll be honest from my perspective. When your running a BUSINESS everything is STRICTLY Business. Yes, you have to straighten things in order for your business to run well and FLOURISH. FREDO, was slacking off and NOT doing his JOB, I mean. There's nothing wrong with what he was doing but he did it at the wrong time at least do it on your break time. But from Micheal perspective he thought straighten him out or slapping his brother round meant that he does not respect TBE core Leon family because they have no more muscle. But at the same time he should've not smack a grown man like credo but maybe he should've handled it better instead of smacking him. But overall business is business. But I guess every family has their own rules or special treatment wise.
I always thought that Fredo subconscious hated the family except for his mom. That includes himself. That is my explanation of how he destroyed himself
@@kimrogers4865 He would have had no problem with Sonny being Don. His issue was with Micheal being younger than him. Even then, I think he hates his status rather than his family. When Micheal spoke to him, I think his plan was to strip Fredo of all his responsibilities and let him live. Fredo's jealousy and contempt for Micheal is what got him killed.
So yeah Biden...
Also Fredo: **dead**
It's amazing how Michael turns from an innocent kid to a cold blooded killer in the movies.
You must remember the beginning of the Godfather when he was a child. He lived with violence all of his life. Even in New York, there was no guaranteed someone was not going to kill you so the Godfather started to plan ahead and create his own family. Despite Michael wanting to be his own person - there was a need for him to be part of the family business. The family was not going to survive with Santino or Sonny in charge because of his temper would get him killed. As for Fredo, he was the weak link and not smart at all. This is why Michael was the only one from the three boys good enough to follow in his father's business. Hagen was also good but not an Italian which other Dons would not trust or respect him.
Why you say he was innocent? He fought in WWII... he came home hardened no doubt.
@@geordiejones5618 Also the movie sharpen the edges so to speak. In the book the difference between Vito and Michael is noticeably smaller. Vito is given quite a few vices in comparison to his movie amost idealised version, while Michael has a better way with people than in the movie. It's hinted in the book (changed in the movies) that Michael's rule will be similar to Vito's. (Vito as presented in the book)
@@Sanderus i definitely need to read the books.
It was out of necessity. His father was shot up and barely holding on to life, his older brother shot to pieces and killed. There was no other way and he did what he had to for the protection of his family.
I love the way Michaels ego is activated when he says "You straightened out my brother" then he quickly snaps out of it and remains calm, sign of a very good leader that not being driven my emotion.
Exactly like when he meets with Sen. Geary at the beginning of Godfather II. The Sen. insults Michael's family and his Italian heritage, he remains cool and business-like, but you can see his mind working. You just know things will not end well for him.
That showed the line you crossed with Michael. He loved his family and Moe Green putting his hands on Fredo almost made him step out of character. Fredo betraying him didn't anger Michael, it hurt him and that's when he became dark and ruthless.
0:40 why did he chANGE HIS VOICE
Alex Rocco (Moe Green) kept mispronouncing "Barzini", so they had Abe Vigoda (Tessio) ADR the line.
@@tolar9 Why on earth would they ADR it, should have kept the mispronunciation in.
@@tolar9 He literally said Barzini perfectly 5-10 seconds earlier.

They just fancied getting James Earl Jones in to do one line.
I lost my dad when I was 33. In my entire existence to him, I don't remember my father thanked me for anything. He loved me from all of his heart though. Almost 4-5 months before his demise he was bed ridden and I showed him this movie. I still remember his words when he had tears in his eyes and he said "Son! Thank you for showing me this movie as I wanted to see this for too long."
I will miss you dad.
Just shows you how pathetic fredo was. They are damn near talking about him like he's not in the room. Then he is defending the guy that literally slaps him around! Wow.
He spent years with the guy, he probably still felt more powerful with moe than he did in the family.
Fredo with Moe was as bad as the sister with her abusive husband.
Fredo's reaction makes sense though, he knows he was in the wrong acting like a fool, but he doesn't understand that as a boss/underboss of the family, his person being UNASSAILABLE is paramount to their reputation, he is by nature an underling and doesn't understand dominance.
True
@@QueekHeadtaker correct. Fredo was sent on good terms and for Moe to physically strike Fredo (and for others to find out about it) is intolerable to the family's honor. Michael didn't say "You straightened FREDO out?". He said "You straightened MY BROTHER out?". Fredo surely deserved a smack but Moe was a fool to admit he'd hit and humiliated a Don's brother. That's so bold it's a gesture of contempt.

The thing Al does better than any actor in history is his eyes. The way his eyes move, widen, and squint shows his emotions perfectly, and it’s honestly hypnotizing! Also, the character himself is mostly calm and very collected so when he does get angry it’s a lot more impactful!

Damn that line alone can scare the sh*t out of you!
I'm sure Moe is scared. Look how agitated he is, angry, screaming at the top of his lungs, breaking things, while Michael is calm, cold, talks quietly and smokes his cigarette.
Essie G. Moe isn't scared, he's described as a hothead and he acts accordingly. When Moe hears the "you straightened my brother out?" line, he looks at Michael incredulously and says "HE WAS BANGING COCKTAIL WAITRESSES TWO AT A TIME!! Players couldn't get a drink at the table, what's wrong with you??!!", in other words, he can't believe that Michael can't fathom what a complete worthless dumbshit Fredo really is, and he also looks at Michael as beneath him ("I made my bones when you were going out with cheerleaders.") Moe Greene is modeled on Bugsy Siegel, considered the founder of Las Vegas. In this scene, Moe Greene isn't afraid, he's _underestimating_ Michael, and he's pissed that Michael is so cool and calm when in Moe's opinion, Michael should be giving him more respect than to offer to buy him out (in the scene before this Moe says to Michael "You buy me out?? No, I buy YOU out!!").
Antonym Scalia that’s being scared. Reacting that way is a defense mechanism. Mikes calm was terrifying to Mo because in most cases, Mo would get a reaction like what Fredo gave him. But unlike fredo, mo was scared. Hence why Michael didn’t get slapped but fredo did.
Kills him in the next movie. Lmao
@@bendavid4596 wait, there's a big difference. Fredo was his employee. Michael was there to talk business. Moe knew he couldn´t treat him like Fredo. And remember this: "You goddamn guineas really make me laugh". He insulted Michael just because ichael respectfully told him he was unlucky in the business. He felt threatened and disrespected for the simple fact that Michael wanted to buy his casino, and lost his temper over his hurt ego. He was a hothead, as Roth said in II, and that seemed to be a completely normal reaction in him

I'm waiting for a vin diesel comment to pop up
“You straightened my brother out?” I think we pinpointed the moment Michael decided that Moe was a dead man.
This was the exact moment Skylar became Huell
Nah it was when he said I talked to barzini
@@AY-qy4jn That's what I thought, too. The fact that Moe was also smackin' Fredo around just made sure Michael's decision was 100% FINAL, lol!
;-)
0:40 Darth Vader
Bane holy shit that's hilarious
Rabbi Andy hey cool
LoL ..I always wondered why the sudden voice change
You make that kind of voice when air or water gets stuck in your throat as you're breathing or swallowing. Try to listen carefully, he makes a "clicking" sound with his mouth and then gasps for air. He basically choked on his own breath.
Stacci Guma YOOOOOOO LMAOOO
Its so weird how when he says “I talked to Barzini” his voice just suddenly deepened
0:34 tf happened to his voice for a second
I love that no matter how tough Moe Green is and in spite of how The Family is weaker than it used to be, he got visibly nervous when Michael revealed he knew Moe slapped his brother.
what a chilling warning, pacino was really cold in these films, he was scarily good
and to think his next film was Dog Day Afternoon where he played a sad and pathetic Character Sonny is just amazing.
John Cazale was a very underrated actor indeed I've seen 4 of his films and I'm very impressed with his performances 👏
That “I talked to Barzini” makes me double take every time
what's brilliant about this movie is the integrity of each character and the performance of its actor , even Moe Greene
Well said and much agreed.
mrTommypops oh yeah yeah :D , totally ... great performances , brilliant , not a single moment of compromise was allowed it seems , even Tessio was great ... um , Mclusky , and Solozzo The Turk ! omg that guy was totally badass ! u name em and boy did they their job pretty well . :3
'you straightened my brother out' then the stare that could kill.. gives me chills
It was then that Moe Green sealed his fate.
Only he can straighten up his brother🤣🤣
Legitimately one of the most upsetting Oscar snubs! Al Pacino DESERVED the Oscar for this!
I'm ok with you Salvador
He has my respect. Screw the Oscars.
No
Who won that year?
John Cazale
is such phenomenal actor. honestly brilliant.
"You think I'm skimming off the top Mike?"
"You're unlucky"
I always loved that line.
LOL...I can't see Michael even enjoying a casino or gambling. He's so serious.
@@mlauren629 Surely a man in his world has seen how gambling is some men's downfall. I think he'd regard it as a vice/weakness, or at best a frivolous distraction from business.
It's from the book. It's an especially insulting thing to accuse a Mafioso of, since (traditionally) they're all very superstitious. Moe confidently asks if Mike's accusing him of being a cheat - Mike says "No, you're just a born loser."
It's all about the skim.
the guy who plays moe green is an excellent actor
c88.rex tbh who isn’t in this movie?
Alex Rocco
He did Friends of Eddie Coyle too 1973
@@timpriddy349 That was another great film. One of Robert Mitchum's best. Eddie 'Fingers'. And Peter Boyle. 1970s ultra realism, at it's zenith.
Alex Rocco Born at 1936
0:40 that's gotta be a voiceover right 🤣🤣🤣
It’s iconic that all don vito kids have separate personalities coming from him
I like how Michael just stares these idiots down and doesn't even give their bullshit any response. His eyes communicate more than his mouth does. It's like he's saying ''Yeah, I think we both know what's going to happen, I'm fine with either scenario (you getting clipped or you obeying) see you later''
Period. They're all dead men to Mike. Those are the eyes of a man who has the power to make you dead.
Its the eyes chico they never lie
Mike never blinked with those dead eyes. Fredo should have known he was a dead man too, because his brother never blinked.
When Mo green says I talked to barzini it sounds like a different voice.
He turned into Darth Vader for a sec
@@pluso I talked to Barzini, pray i do not talk to him again
Bad dubbing for some reason.
@@situated4 Not dubbed. Something got stuck in his throat, salive or air. He actually swallowed hence the clicking sound.
kind of sounds like Omar Suarez for a second
John Cazale only appeared in 5 feature films but all of them were nominated for the 'Best Picture' Oscar!
1:07 is the coldest scariest line delivery of Michael
All I want to know is how someone like Fredo manages to seduce 2 women simultaneously
Money? 🤷♂️
fredo still has that corleone charm,
he can do that, and i believe it so,
He was out of both his brother's shadow while in Vegas, so he was acting up. That, and money. There's a reason he was bagging waitresses, they were using him for the cash.
Money is all i can think about bro, lol
You act different around professional killers. Fredo is probably a much more confidant, swaggering man around someone he doesn't think will kill him with their bare hands.
I saw this movie for the first time maybe 8 years ago. Since then, I've watched it 5 or 6 times. This line always had me thinking..."don't ever take sides with anyone against the family again"...I would always think, "or else WHAT? what are you gonna do, kill your own brother or something"...and then a few days ago i finally watched the sequel.
Ouch
Now it's time for part 3
@@kcinkcin3808 I actually watched part 3 for the first time a couple months ago
Love how moe sits down after Michael raises his voice for the first time.
Morgan Freeman: but Fredo didn’t listen to Michael and he took sides against the family
One of the greatest scenes in the history of cinema. Script, setting, wardobe, acting..... just perfect!
I really hope Fredo took his brother advice and now they are a happy and great family :)
LOL right
You didn't see Godfather II did u?
Clearly he did
"You broke my heart....."
...except that tiny bit where he ends up disowning him, then killing him!
watched this movie growing up im 20 , i studied this movie and still do. It’s Like the movements, the lack of emotion, the cold stare , Not talking unless it’s necessary , Business man. This Movie is a Masterpiece simple
That is the code in real life, baby; "Don't ever take sides with anyone against the family...ever!"
That shot from above is iconic. “Don’t ever take sides with anyone against the family again, ever!
Michael's discipline and honor towards the family made the final scene/frame in the Part II so impactful. Sitting alone in his yard as the family behind crumbled.
He put some base in his voice when Moe let Mike know he talked to Barzini.
hilarious!
"Who said FAMILY?" - Dominic Toretto
There's so much to love about this scene...the acting, directing, cinematography, the blocking, etc. And Pacino's cold stare at Fredo right before his infamous line at 1:59. You can't rehearse that. A classic Master Class right here.
1:57 Cold brotherly love.
Max Power is there any other kind?
I bet Fredo no doubt learned from this warning, loved his brother - and the series probably ends with him running things alongside his brother. Such a heartwarming tale of how inseparable brothers can be. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
1:56 he swalloed the smoke 😵
Any real cigarette smoker does.
@@reginaphalange9417 valid point.
2:04 - “Don’t Ever Take Sides with anyone against the Family Ever again… Ever !!” - The Way Michael says that part… Incredible !!
This movie and the Godfather Part II are the best two movies of all time in my opinion.
It is actually from Godfather Part ll
@@alishbaishfaq6586 No. It's from Godfather I
@@alishbaishfaq6586 This is 1 you even here them talk about how the Don is ill and not dead.
Freddy doesn't know the meaning of loyalty. He dug his own grave disrespecting the family and the new Don.
This is some next level foreshadowing if you’ve watched all 3 movies
2:05 Fredo clearly didn't get the message.
