    I think they had everyone at "Sometimes you're better off dead", which to me was a groundbreaking moment. In addition, rap done in British accent then was unprecedented, bold and career-defining.

    I love PSB. Have every album and most remixes. I love how prolific they are and their clever lyrics, not to mention the amazing electronics. When I talked about how Depeche Mode had lost their hooks, PSB never have. They still make great music today. I had the pleasure of meeting them once and they were very funny and polite men. Still treasure the items they signed for me. I would love a deep dive into their production and how they achieved so many signature sounds. Hell, I even loved the album they did with Liza Minnelli. Love your work, keep it up!

      I will disagree a little bit. PSB got a second breath when they took on Stuart Price as the producer. Not all their albums are listenable for me from start to finish. Electric, Super and Hotspot are. But that is just my opinion. Depeche Mode, New Order, Pet Shop Boys - the holy trinity of British pop.

    You're knocking it out of the park, man! PSB are unsung synth legends! By God! The first time I heard "Two Divided By Zero", I knew that I'd be playing synths until the end! They're still putting out quality stuff to this day! Most recently, "Integral" I find to be a masterpiece.
    You know that this means that you're going to need to eventually do a video on Electronic! I mean, the Smiths, PSB, and New Order members in one group!?!?

      If I had to choose one PSB song "Being Boring" stands out. Its not that cheery poppy song that used to define the band. There is something in that song that makes you a bit nostalgic I think. Thinking of how your life turned out to be. Sometimes missing the time when you were 20, young, looking good and could party eight weekends in a row and still be that naive, happy guy. To me the song define the kind of sadnes that comes with getting older. Looking back, regretting things that you should have done back then but you didnt and now you are to old. Stuff like that you now.
      The song is a about being gay I now but I think this song can speak to any one regardless your sexuality.

      I was 23 when "Behavior" was released and at the time, the gay community was being decimated with death from HIV-related illness and death. The song "Being Boring" resonated with so many for its poignant lyrical reference to those lives affected - "All the people I was kissing - some are here, and some are missing in the 1990's." That's great stuff. Then, in 1996 they released "Bilingual", which included the track "The Survivors" - that one brought folks to tears for years... one of their very best.

    When I discovered that they did almost all their music only with keyboards (instead of a whole rock band), my life changed instantaneously. I was a young piano player and that toke my view of music to another level. I've become a huge fan of PSB, they inspired me so much sinse 1987, when I've bought Introspective. And you're right, they are really intellectual. That also made a lot of sense to me. It's very amusing how these things connect together to influence us, when we're young.

    I absolutely love the Pet Shop Boys but in recent years I haven't been that fussed on their music particularly their last few albums with Stuart Price at the helm. I'm not into the club sound as much and I really hope they will revisit their earlier sound again sometime. I loved the chord progressions back then, the basslines, the orchestrations, choirs - a real classic English/British sound if ever there was one. Even when you played the snippets on the piano the hairs on the back of my head stood up and I literally got the tingles. Their melodies were sublime and so lush. I hope in your later videos you will go into deeper detail of their melodies and chord structure of their early stuff.

      I agree, their Stuart Price stuff is so bloodless and digital compared to their heyday. Yes is a more recent album I like though, where they really play to their pop strengths

    • @Melodic_Alchemy
      @Melodic_Alchemy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Fatherjohn76 I kinda feel the same way - as music production becomes more accessible to everyone, I think everyone's music started sounding more and more the same, and the market is saturated with music with the same sounds and instrumentation.
      I know PSB's tenent has always been to produce songs that are popular in current club scene, but by doing so, they have made themselves sound like everyone else now that there is so much of the same thing everywhere... which is a shame really.
      however, the vocal is still top notch, and at least we can tell still it's by them from the voice :)

    Scrolling through the comments I realized that I haven't commented on this gem, though I come and watch it regularly :) I just love Pet Shop Boys. As you said and demonstrated, they write so beautiful melodies that work so well. And the lyrics are amazing too. Neil is a master of telling a story with the most usual phrases and the result is still unique. They are both so wonderfully talented. What I like in them the most that they did not change after they became famous. They have always been very kind, humble, friendly and down-to earth. All their interviews are fantastic, they have a great sense of humor and don't take themselves too seriously. They are icons and legends for me, in the best sense of those words. And they always had a keen sense of design, their album covers and live shows are phenomenal.

    Firstly, another fantastic video. Look forward to seeing more on PSB and if course all other synthpop.
    Pet Shop Boys are my all time favourite band. I have Loved them since the beginning and have been an avid fan ever since 'Please' was released and the beginning chords of two divided by zero started to play. I have seen them live and met them on numourous occasions through the years so I am obviously so very glad that you have chosen to start a series talking about there work. The electronic music movement in the 1980's remains my favourite musical genre. Kraftwerk of course started it all but spun So many wonderful acts that followed. PSB, Soft Cell, ABC, OMD, Depeche Mode, Erasure, New Order, Human League, not to mention standalone artists like Jean Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield, I mean the list goes on and on with far too many to name. I Love some of the songs you chose to showcase on your first video. Kings Cross and Rent are two of my all time faves as Actually remains my personal favourite album of all time.
    Future videos focusing on the earlier years of Please, Actually, Introspective & Behaviour would be great to see as I value your opinion tremendously even after watching around six or seven videos. I do still Love PSB and enjoyed Electric and Super but do agree with you that the more up to date work is far more club focused and remixable in this digital world we now find ourselves in.
    Once again, Great vid and look forward to the next one. All the best mate x

    Awesome duo. I've always loved them: great lyrics, melodies and overall sonic landscape. That sort of bitter, ironic, posh attitude but still fun & pop. I couldn't agree more on the worth of melody aspect: if your melody is solid, instrumentation is just the piece of clothing you choose to wear but it's always you. After all, that's what MTV unplugged showed us back in the day and now with piano or guitar covers of popular songs on TH-cam.

    Very great video of Pet Shop Boys! They remind me of the band Gorillaz since the both of them combine different genres of music. That being said, you should do a video of the different genres Pet Shop Boys have covered over the years if you're up to it! From what I know, they dived into orchestral stuff like you've mentioned, Freestyle music on "Domino Dancing", New Jack Swing with "How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously", Latin music with "Bilingual", House with "Nightlife", and so many more!

"The Way It Used to Be", "The Pop Kids" and "The Loving Kind" and three more recent PSB songs that show that they haven't totally gone pre-programmed club music. Their music, at their best, whether rocking out to "Was It Worth It" or the U2 cover "Where the Streets Have No Name" or "Jealousy" with Robbie Williams... They are just an anazing pair of composers... Please do more on the PSBs. Thank you.

    I preferred the early PSB albums.
    The early ones had a very British cold synth pop sound which I liked right up until their 4th album “Behaviour”
    After that, apart from the odd song, their sound became very Hi NRG / House “clubby” sounding which personally I don’t have much time for

      @@VaughnGeorge The earlier PSB stuff benefits from the analog synths - whilst they surely had their limits, it probably helped them and their producers to be more creative with the sounds. In early albums there does seem to be more depth in things like hand claps and drums, more "squelchy" noises. The original "Paninaro" is a good example (which they both wrote and produced I believe) - the sound is much more dense. The music from Super and Electric, whilst I like it very much, does tend to lack that certain je ne sais quoi in the depth and range of the music.

    • @Melodic_Alchemy
      @Melodic_Alchemy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gabbytheguy actually, most of their earlier stuff (before Behaviour) is actually done on digital synths and samplers. e.g. Actually was done on mostly a fairlight CMI3 (a super pricey music computer)...
      I also agree that in terms of arrangement and instrumentation, they have become more and more generic dance and less unique... and I am not as interested as a result as well.
      having said that, recently I listened to their lockdown version of west end girls and that was brilliant. a good mix of modern and retro sound... then I listened to the last 3 albums and there are some good stuff on there.

    I'm actually an avid Pet Shop Boys fan. Their stuff from the 90s-00s is fill of gems. I particularly love their b-sides because they aren't afraid to get experimental, and they are one of those bands who do a decent job of genre hopping. Their score for Battleship Potemkin in 2004 was something that I always appreciated a lot. They performed it life at Trafalgar Square underneath a huge movie projector and a a strong orchestra. Their albums Fundamental and Yes are definitely my two favorites so far. Also, they do quite a bit of songs that reference Russian culture. It is a bit geeky, but still irrisistable. There are so many songs they've written, but the real fun ones are those b-sides and bonus tracks. I also love what they did with a song called Casting A Shadow, which was played and timed to coincide with the 1999 total solar eclipse over on that side of the pond. An example of a b-side of theirs that I personally love is a song called Transparent. Very Kraftwerk-y. I prefer post-1990 PSB for the most part. They also did some pretty kickass remixes for other artists. Definitely smarts behind a lot of the lyrics. Lots of historical figures referenced. Glad to see someone posted a video appreciating them. Props!
    Update: oh GOD, this is littered with typos. I'll fix 'em tomorrow! Time to sleep!

    A measure of how great an artist is can be illustrated by the songs they write for other performers,The Pet Shop Boys 'collaborated' with Dusty Springfield,Liza Minelli,Seventh Wonder(patsy kensit),Electronic,David Bowie and the breadth of re-mixes of other artists songs.

    Post 1990, their stuff is very erratic in terms of quality control (in my opinion) but they always still manage to produce a total gem of a song every couple of years.
    I recommend (if you haven't already) listening to their mid-2000s album "Fundamental", which really does harken back to their imperial era in terms of production and quality of lyrics.

      Cool! I look forward to it! Oh, btw: The song "In The Night", the b-side of Opportunities, has the same chords as Opportunities.Another fun fact: when mixing both songs for the single in the studio, the engeneer made a remark that the songs were wrongly labeled; the a-side was labeled as a b-side. He thought In The Night was the actual a-side. This is a common thing in the PSB canon: fantastic, and sometimes even superior, b-sides of already great a-side songs.

      Can Neil's Smash Hits background be credited as the reason the Pet Shop Boys started at the very top? They seemed to have everything in place long before they released anything. If I remember rightly from a documentary, they had stylish full page ads photographed or designed by Mark Farrow(?) in the music press with no product or release being pushed by the advert as such. Then they appear on the Old Grey Whistle Test to play live with not one but TWO Fairlights to perform an absolutely iconic short set. The thing I get a bit cynical about is when you hear Neil saying "Oh we just wanted a little underground dance record. We didn't imagine it would be THAT successful". Really? Someone with money clearly believed in you. They must have been under very early pressure to deliver. No spit and sawdust learning curve playing small clubs and releasing "promising" songs that hinted at things to come. They had to start at the top of their game. And they did. And they continued to do so right up until 2019 imo. Loving these vids! Thank you so much @VaughnGeorge. Loved the OMD vid too. My fave bands ever are OMD followed by PSB.

I'd say they did not wholly lose it, as they tend to go for international sound on individual and selected tracks (touches of classical, Russian, Latino, etc). The clubby (glassy, digital) sound they currently produce is the sound of modern UK (IMHO) , the sound of 21st century, being forward looking futurists that they are. I love pet shop boys. They have given many beautiful music to us. Thank you so much for the video! I have been their fan since the 80's. Their songs have many layers and although they are electronic band, most of their early songs had a lot of real orchestra playing on them. I think most fan still like to know how Neil and Chris work in technical and musical aspect of the songs and production. Also on live performances, what parts does Chris play?

    • @dedpxl
      @dedpxl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      in live performances Chris plays the music live. he has a music sheet on a screen and plays along. in some performances they film his hands so you can see exactly what he's playing. there are several parts in all songs so he only plays 1 or 2, it's rare that he will make it sound different from the record but he certainly plays live.
      some tracks like The Enigma he actually uses dials and knobs to change the sound of the song live. and in some older performances he will do things like play live drums or even perform vocals.
      I remember he said in an interview it doesn't really matter what he does because it could be pre-recorded, and even if he changes it up it could still be pre-recorded. regardless it takes talent to do what he does and Neil admires it.
