세계적인 케이팝 아이돌그룹 방탄소년단(BTS)이 젊은 세대를 대표하는 아이콘으로서 24일(현지시간) 유엔총회 무대에 섰다. 한국 가수가 유엔총회 행사장에서 연설하는 것은 이번이 처음이다.
방탄소년단은 이날 낮 뉴욕 유엔본부 신탁통치이사회 회의장에서 진행된 유엔아동기금(UNICEF·유니세프) 청년 어젠다 ‘제너레이션 언리미티드’(Generation unlimited) 행사에 참석했다. 안토니우 구테흐스 유엔 사무총장이 이끄는 ‘청년(Youth) 2030’ 프로그램 중 교육부문 파트너십을 홍보하기 위한 자리다. 기성세대에 기대기보다 스스로 적극적으로 목소리를 내고 권한을 확대하자는 취지다.
방탄소년단은 지난해 11월부터 유니세프와 손잡고 세계 아동·청소년 폭력을 근절하기 위해 시작한 ‘러브 마이셀프’(LOVE MYSELF) 캠페인을 알리고 있다.
김용 세계은행 총재가 “청년세대를 대표하는 최고의 역할을 하는 방탄소년단이 이 자리에 있다”고 소개했고, 곧이어 방탄소년단 7명은 자리에서 일어나 회의장 단상 앞에 섰다. 일명 ‘랩몬스터’로 불리는 리더 RM(본명 김남준·24)이 마이크를 잡고 유창한 영어로 연설을 시작했다. 이후 7분간 이어진 진솔한 연설에 참석자들은 힘찬 박수로 화답했다.
The world-famous K-pop idol group BTS stood on the stage of the United Nations General Assembly on the 24th (local time) as an icon representing the young generation. This is the first time that a Korean singer speaks at the United Nations General Assembly event. BTS attended the ‘Generation Unlimited’ event, a youth agenda of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), held at the Trusteeship Board meeting room at the United Nations Headquarters in New York this day. This is an opportunity to promote partnerships in the education sector as part of the ‘Youth 2030’ program led by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The purpose is to actively raise voices and expand authority rather than relying on the older generation. Since November of last year, BTS has been promoting the ‘LOVE MYSELF’ campaign, which started in collaboration with UNICEF to eradicate violence against children and youth around the world.
