- This is a quick video on how to repair gel coat damage. You can obviously go a lot further to get a perfect colour match and finish but hoping this video helps people to repair unsightly chips or scrapes.
All the best 👌
Excellent easy to follow and methodical video, good tip about the acetone and paper towl as well. Looks mint at the end there, cheers for posting.
Hi Mate,
Thanks and glad you found it helpful.
Thanks also for your encouragement 👍
cheers 🍻

@@25hpboatracerman I'm patching up a few small gel coat chips very similar to what you repair in the vid, had been using this Septone Gel Coat Filler repair though says it's no good for below the waterline...guessing should have just gone with flow coat from the start after watching
Hi mate,
Should be ok, it’s normally only an issue if it’s a moored boat. I’ve used the steptone repair on trailer boats too, definitely has its place.
Cheers 🍻

@@25hpboatracerman ahh good call yea she's on a trailer 95% of her life with the occasional overnighter on anchor. Be giving the pippette a run for sure in the future, found squidging out the hardner and curing times pretty variable!
Thanks for the video! If you have gelcoat without wax, you can mist it with PVA (polyvynil alcohol) to get it to cure.
Hi mate, thanks for your comments 😂
I have heard that works fine, haven’t done it myself.
cheers 🍻

That's really helpful thanks. So flow coat is better for surfaces beneath the water line?
Nice repair, very informative, time to repair a few chips in mine, cheers.
Cheers mate,
Hope it helped

great video mate been awhile good to be back.
Hey mate 👋
Thanks for your comments 👍
Yeah it’s been a while, life threw me some curve balls, getting back into things now, can’t take away my love of boats and outboards 😂
cheers 🍻
Hey mate cheers for sharing your knowledge! 👍🏾. Question I’m a beginner when it comes to repair work so I’m following your video step by step haha quick question I have some chips that are abit deeper with this whole process once cured will it become fully waterproof.? Or should I add another layer of flo over the top?
Cheers again mate 👍🏾
Hi Champion,
Unfortunately get coat and flow coat are not fully waterproof, totally fine for a trailer boat. A moored boat can get water let in through the gel coat causing osmosis. If you want to flow over the whole thing if it’s a moored boat then up to you.
Cheers 🍻

Great Video

Approximately how long does it take to cure to start sanding. I know it’s weather dependent but is there a way to speed the process up if need be?
Hi Mate,
Polyester gel kicks off pretty quickly, like within 20 minutes your able to sand on a warm day.
I would just do a quick test but I would be hesitant to want it any faster, you would need to work super human fast.
cheers 🍻

Would you do same for spider cracks, have cracks in my caravan
Hi mate,
Spider cracks are very hard to sort out properly.
Grind out the area where the cracks are and sometimes you need to add more glass to the substrate to strengthen the area that caused the spider crack.
If they are small crows feet cracks (from sun damage) just scallop them out and do as per the video.
There should be something on TH-cam about repairing spider cracks in gel coat and as you might find, it’s often more than the gel coat that is the problem unfortunately.
Sorry I could not be of more assistance mate.
Cheers

whats the name of a engredients or chemical powder you put?
Hi Mate,
you can use Talc or a west system powder.

I find mixing gelcoat with silica first then hardener will be more managable
Hi Mate,
Yep, that works too 👌

@@25hpboatracerman Thanks mate
Very good results. But, working overhead with hot polyester gelcoat and no eye protection? Aussies are tough, but yikes!
Hi mate,
Cheers 🍻
Yeah, you are correct, I really should have eye protection on for sure.
All the best from Aus 👌
Impressive
Thanks Mate,
hope it helps

Jelkotun içine koyduğunuz beyaz toz nedir?
MERHABA
talk veya kabosildir
teşekkürler
Hey mate i was just wondering if i can use talcum powder as a thickener in the exact same scenario to repair on my keel? Cheers
Hi mate,
I would get talc from the resin - flow coat supplier (not sure if talcum powder as in for personal stuff is the same).
But yes talc from a resin supplier is fine, most fillers have talc in them as a body.
Cheers 🍻

I might have missed it in the video but, can that surface be painted now? I have some repairs like this to do on the gelcoat of an old golf cart.
Hi mate,
Yes gel coat can be painted, if the surface is going to be painted anyway I would just use a normal two part filler instead of gel coat then paint.
I use two part primer if I’m painting gel coat to ensure a good bond but I’m sure there are lots of paints that work, just test a small area and see if it is suitable.

Nice job 👍🏼

Aussie Boat Guy 😎
What’s the name/brand of that thickener powder than you used?
Hi mate,
I used Q cell but it’s best to check with your flow coat supplier what they recommend for their products.
Cheers
Aussie Boat Guy 😎
can you list the materials please
Sure Champion
Sand paper, acetone, paper towels, Flowcoat, talc or recommended thickening powder from your fiberglass supplier where you buy the Flowcoat, fiberglass polish, personal protective mask, goggles, clothing. Also you should see if there is a gel coat repair kit already made for you at the supplier, can make it even easier.
