Massive reading catch up

- I have meant to talk about some or all of these books in more detail but they just began piling up and remained unshelved. This is a clumsy attempt to put them all on camera and clear out the backlog.
It's a little all over the place. On the plus side, you get to see a bunch of books.
Hope you're all keeping well.
Hi Daniel, came across your channel recently and enjoy listening to your musings. Grabbed a copy of Vanity Fair today as a result of your chats, and have bookmarked The Warden by Trollope too. In general I am making a 'pivot' towards the 'greats', the 'classics' and 'others things I can put in apostrophes'. I have drawn up a list in which I tackle one "great book" a month and I slowly drink it in (while supplementing with other, often contemporary lit on the weekends and evenings). Mrs Dalloway and Heart of Darkness last month (two because of the length) and Brothers Karamazov this month. Am delighting in it. Happy reading!
Fantastic. I love your approach. There are so many terrific classics available and I too like to mix them in with more contemporary reading.
So glad you did this, I had missed your regular review videos these past few months
Thanks. Trying to be more consistent, but it's been a rough few months.
Great memories of loving The Joy Luck Club and Brideshead Revisited.
100%!
Also looking forward to Salman Rushdie’s book ‘Knife’ 👍🏼 ‘Antartica’ grew on me as I read it, although it was quite dark. Still not sure whether Max Porter is all style over content, but ‘Grief is the Thing with Feathers’ was great.
Quite the temporal experience watching this btw, your voice slowly becoming entirely detached from the visuals 😂
I hear you on Porter, but I really enjoyed Lanny even more than Grief...
Same - hard to hear
Sorry!
I was halfway through The Secret Hours before I realized with glee that this was the origin story of the much loved brilliant characters of Slough House ❤. Loved it!
I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but it really is that good.
you can find interviews with McBride online. He is charming and delightful. Although very different in plot, etc. I find Deacon King Kong to be a good companion to Heaven and Earth. Both books revolve around a communities filled with 3D characters. McBride is so warm and generous even with flawed characters.
I will read more by McBride.
Foster was my favorite book of last year. I have to check out, Emma Cline.
Thank you for the religious book suggestions. Have you read the garden of Emuna? Shalom and aloha
No I don't know that one. I will have a look. Thanks for the recommendation.
I lost track of the order of the Maigret novels so I have skipped over the sixth book. I read two Simenon in March, one that wasn’t a Maigret which reminded me of Balzac. Enjoyed your thoughts on Big Swiss. I loved What’s Up Doc!
My late father introduced me to What's Up, Doc? many years ago and it's the movie I have rewatched more than any other.
@@GuiltyFeat I had such a crush on Barbara Streisand after I saw it for the first time.
Shabbat Shalom
Shavua tov!
You've sold me on Mick Herron! Haven't read him (but love the genre). Would you recommend starting with the Slough House series or going back to the Zoë Boehm series first?
Definitely start with the Slough House series. It’s tremendous.
@@GuiltyFeat Love a firm recommendation! Thank you!
Can't imagine anyone around you putting books at curb without consulting you first.
You'd think, right?
Grumpy tech comment: you don't seem to be synced properly and your sound is very, very low. Maybe a bodyworn microphone would sort things out? I promise I've tested it and I don't think the problem is my end!
Concur with @TranslatorTuber -- sound and image got a bit disconnected and I did have to turn my volume right up. But maybe you were recording late at night, and had to keep the noise down?
I think it's time to invest in a mic.
You should read The Good Lord Bird by James McBride
I definitely intend to read more McBride.
