Also the fact that he makes the noise he wants to come out of the guitar with his mouth shows that playing the guitar is just as natural to him as speaking/singing, even with highly technical shreds, which is an INSANE display of proficiency.
miming what you're playing means almost nothing, although it is funny that during the bit you describe as being as natural as speaking he hits a wrong note
Thrash Maniac That's not true at all. Many musicians who have a great ear cannot sing, even if they try to learn... and some just have a bad voice for it.
Thrash Maniac Are you slow or something? You can "find" the notes but if your voice isn't good enough to produce them, then you can't sing! Singing is about your voice just as much as it's about having an ear and knowing music... you know that, right? If you're guitar technique is terrible but you are musical with a good ear... you're not going to be much of a guitarist either. Get it??

Although Steve can play anything at any speed like virtuoso's do he still maintains a human touch to the instrument. The way he holds the guitar and his finger run around the neck is very natural, it's like he has a very close relation to the instrument, he is feeling it in a way. And his unique playing style really explodes when it comes to very fast licks. Its astonishing how he manages to maintain his phrasing quality even at ultra high speed making the licks he plays speak. I haven't seen this in any other so called "virtuoso", most fast players when it comes to shredding play metronome exercises...Steve Vai refuses to do that and creates music even in unnatural for most humans speed. That's why many people cant understand his music/ find it frustrating etc. You really need a very high rank of musical understanding and a very good ear to get this stuff.
I have to agree. Steve's music pulls on your ears. This music really isn't for everybody. There's these little nuances in his playing, all these little elements packed together. It's really fascinating, if you listen closely he plays some of the most mellifluous things on the instrument. One of the things he's very good at doing, and something not very common in western musicians is playing harmony instead of melody. Most musicians are stuck with playing harmony over a melody, and pull out a series of runs and licks very tightly connected to the backing melody, it becomes monotone and predictable. The way I envision Steve's playing is like a sinuous form, he goes around and wanders a bit and then comes back. Even though the song is structured through a simple melody, he pulls out all these different ideas and flavors as he goes, he's not just stuck to similar phrasing like most musicians are. I can really see the influence of eastern musicians on Steve, eastern music is known for playing a lot of harmony and less melody. Steve does the same thing here, therefore, for people unfamiliar with world music and folklore, they don't understand Steve Vai one bit.

As I'd been coming back to this song over many, many years, I'd also been discovering more and more depth to it as time progresses and as I climb higher upon the mountain of music education. This is truly a gift that keeps on giving. So many layers to uncover, which is a real treat for a music nerd!
Dave Mustaine of Megadeth has something sorta similar (might only be two necks) and it gave him bad shoulder/back problems in short order. Could only play it upright for a song at a time or something iirc. Hence why Mr. Vai is sitting down I guess haha
What an inspiring musical mind. Such beautiful melodies and rhythms. it's so rare to witness something so personal and magical; musically, especially considering society's norms of music today. what I'm saying is it's a shame not everyone can appreciate master works such as these.
sheer genius. My recently passed away wife and mines favorite guitar player ever. when I go where she is I pray that Steve goes there too one day. not too soon i hope but when our time comes i hope Steve is there to serenade us every night before we sleep. We love you Steve. Monte and Lindsay Phillips.
This video was literally my inspiration to pick up a guitar. That and my uncle who recently passed. He showed me this video. The spark of imagination that came from this video… I love it. My uncle could play a couple of Steve’s songs. But he sat there with me and we both fangirled at the way he played in this video lol. I miss him. And I wish I could go back to that day
I was 12 years old when my best friend showed me this. We both played guitar but, I was a bit less familiar than him. I couldn't believe I wasn't a fan already, after seeing this. Total awe. The immense detail, the voice, everything we love in Vai, I couldn't formulate it into thoughts even. But I knew I had to start playing differently, after that. In a way that really spoke. Even if just to myself. Great love to you, and your uncle.
I used to listen to the solo in the beginning so much when I was a teenager but never cared for the song. Today was my first time listening all the way to the end, and I regret going 10+ years without blessing my ears with that.

I was in middle school and I used to spend days at my house listening to this G3 in Denver with my two friends. I recall them going crazy during Little Wing solos, and they would always prefer Yngwie's and Joe's, but me, I would always get chills during Steve's and I was always fighting over it, because to me, that was the best one. Now after many years I'm a musician, I've studied composition and piano, and I know why I liked that more.
sometimes i think i don't like steve vai's stuff anymore and then i come back and i smile through the whole video and can recall what is the part he's gonna play next because i used to watch this religiously as a kid. still the goat
i first found this video in 2012 (i was 17) seriously the greatest thing ive ever seen musically. just recently remembered this and truly gave me chills again
I think the genius of Steve Vai’s music is it invokes a lot of emotions. You can actually feel the mood change as he plays and change variously during the course of the song
I have been observing this introduction since I was 14 years old, today at 31 after practicing my instrument for 17 years non-stop, I can say that this man is the perfect connection between the instrument and the mind, incredible artist, thank you for sharing your music with us Steve!
me(non guitar player 3 years ago) -mindlessly browsing youtube -sees this video -clicks on it because of the weird looking guitar -literally dies from being exposed to such awesomeness Thanks Steve for inspiring me to pick up the guitar!
Little Stevie Vai thanked me, at the backstage aftershow, for being into his set as much as I was, at the Chicago stop on this tour. One of my very favorite life moments. :)
One of the most astounding rock solos I've ever come across. I keep coming back to this every so often. Love the way two of the guitars are tuned to major chords a whole step apart. As has been said, the sound he gets from the 12 string is amazing- almost orchestral in character. His command of jazz scales, modes, arpeggios, you name it...all the tools are right at his disposal. Incredible improv ability.
Who in there right mind, can say that this man is not an incredible guitarist? I am into Latin Jazz and fusion,,, and I still can hear this man do magic on that guitar. None of the haters can play anywheres near to him. The same for Joe S. INCREDIBLE.
i had to pause to write this comment. I wanted to cry during this for some reason. It's like the emotional link between music and feelings is so strong, and the music was so powerful that i'm overcome with emotion to the point of tears. :'[
hawkboy - And that's what music is SUPPOSED to be. NOT a collection of notes, or even lyrics. But "communication". While the lyrics may or may not be fantastic, great songs always have a memorable melody. ;-)
I keep coming back to this amazing perfomance. What a way to start a show! Incredible lineup. One of the top moments in history of Rock music. It's been a nice time to be around. Thanks Steve!!
This song here is LITERALLY what inspired me to pick up the guitar 4 years later after this video. Now, Ive been playing for 9 year and don't regret it one bit!

I've listened to Steve for years, and this will probably always be my favorite memory of him - I saw him do this on one of the stops of the G3 tour and I'll never forget it. Because I'll always remember, Yngwie Malmsteen went before him and had such a big entrance - tons of smoke machines, and came out with a karate kick while playing a million notes per second, and didn't really tone it down the whole time he was out there. And then when it comes to Steve's turn, he just casually walks out, but you see his tech bringing the triple neck guitar out and everyone's mouth fell open. And then everyone was completely spellbound for the rest of the time he was out there.
thank you, never forget that spirit as which i have done. I most deeply and spiritually regret all those missed opportunities for just simply enjoying the instrument, however many that may be. just always for Steves sake, NEVER EVER STOP PLAYING. EVER.
this is still one of the best ways to use a 3 neck guitar in 2018, the whole performance is stunning to say the least especially the intro solo has some incredible melody lines that only a man like steve vai can play with that articulation, the guitar truly sings

As I'd been coming back to this song over many, many years, I'd also been discovering more and more depth to it as time progresses and as I climb higher upon the mountain of music education. This is truly a gift that keeps on giving. So many layers to uncover, which is a real treat for a music nerd!
that thing looks heavy, like almost as much as a single Les Paul...
My les Paul classic weighs as much as several grown elephants
Dave Mustaine of Megadeth has something sorta similar (might only be two necks) and it gave him bad shoulder/back problems in short order. Could only play it upright for a song at a time or something iirc. Hence why Mr. Vai is sitting down I guess haha
@@MrNeilSherman 😍😍😍😍😍
.....almost.... :)
jajaj te la rifaste compa!!!
Thanks Steve ,for all the great music.
It's amazing how he can do all that finger tapping and still have it sound clean.
4:50 brings me to tears, I don't know why. That wah is beautiful!
That's a feels , he playing with soul
bruh I`ve seen this video when I was 4 yo (I'm 16 now) and I just fell in love with guitars. Thanks Steve for inspiring lots and lots of people, including myself, thank my dad bc he showed me the G3 DVD and there was this song. Just shocking to see this video right now and understand all the things Steve does.
Amazed, that's how I felt 12 years ago
Ve o bitches brew
Steve Vai is my favorite guitarist. This man can make a guitar talk. Love this video. Thanks for sharing, Mr. Vai.
Everybody can do that. Just get a talkbox or a wahwah :P
Dan RaduineaD Lol. That is not exactly how I meant that, but you're right. Anyone can make a guitar talk with those. :P
I love Steve Vai. This performance is awesome because you can just see how like a pot of water set on a stove, the temperature just rises as he goes on. Awesome.
YOU great MASTER STEVE VAI:

thank you STEVE VAI...you are the greatest ...guitar-men.
My dad passed away and i remember he showed me this like 50 time's and i acted like i never saw it badass player miss you pops
I've watched it many times. A true masterpiece!!
Superhuman. GOAT. The Best. Master. Innovator. Spiritual. And my Idol: Steve Vai
In Italian "Vai" means "go!" Go vai! Vai go! This could be endless...
Hahaha in portuguese Vai means "go" as well
in Indian Vai means why
He looks Italian or at least half.
8:56 “HERE, chord bee-atch NOW!”
Total professional. Way ahead of his time. Blessed to able to hear live. Book your tickets and enjoy the ride.
sometimes i think i don't like steve vai's stuff anymore and then i come back and i smile through the whole video and can recall what is the part he's gonna play next because i used to watch this religiously as a kid. still the goat
Something magical, transcendental happens at 4:50 I cannot explain with words.
it‘s the spice melange effect. When navigators jump to another solarsystem, that‘s the sound they emmit.
Well, the top open-tuned guitar is hooked to an outboard choral effect. Oh yeh, and magic.
It really does sound angelical. My man Steve raised his power level so much he was about to break reality
This solo got me thinking of all my family members that passed on. Don’t know why but Vai and satriani get me thinking deep on things
i first found this video in 2012 (i was 17) seriously the greatest thing ive ever seen musically. just recently remembered this and truly gave me chills again
Next level playing. The one and only Steve Vai!
steve vai is my spirit animal
I think the genius of Steve Vai’s music is it invokes a lot of emotions. You can actually feel the mood change as he plays and change variously during the course of the song
massive relief when Vai did the long slide until the very last note. amazing feeling.
I have been observing this introduction since I was 14 years old, today at 31 after practicing my instrument for 17 years non-stop, I can say that this man is the perfect connection between the instrument and the mind, incredible artist, thank you for sharing your music with us Steve!
As a professional classical musician the only thing, that I can say is, that
this man must be studied in every music academy/conservatory.
RESPECT !!!
En plena cuarentena escuchando esta obra de arte.

me(non guitar player 3 years ago)
-mindlessly browsing youtube
-sees this video
-clicks on it because of the weird looking guitar
-literally dies from being exposed to such awesomeness
Thanks Steve for inspiring me to pick up the guitar!
As you literally died, what's the guitar store like in heaven
@@rodeladvan “No Stairway To Heaven” applies to guitar stores there as well, or so I’ve heard.
@@rodeladvan Its like Guitar Center, but they actually pays whats your trade-in worth
same shit bro but the only difference ı cant buy guitar
That's not what literally means goddamnit
Little Stevie Vai thanked me, at the backstage aftershow, for being into his set as much as I was, at the Chicago stop on this tour. One of my very favorite life moments. :)
Wow, that's pretty amazing. I've never been a fan of Steve Vai but I quite enjoyed that. Awesome in fact.
Mind totally blown every time I watch this, beyond the realm of perfection
3:38, all time classic "I am amazing, check this shit"
Dat camera flirt...
I love seeing the expressions he makes. You can really tell he just feels it and is one with the instrument, his fingers, the tone, the music.
His playing takes me to another plain of existence.
Who in there right mind, can say that this man is not an incredible guitarist? I am into Latin Jazz and fusion,,, and I still can hear this man do magic on that guitar. None of the haters can play anywheres near to him. The same for Joe S. INCREDIBLE.
this piece of solo is strong and powerful enough to make a dead man rise up in joy...what an absolute masterpiece !!!💘🧡💙💚
i had to pause to write this comment. I wanted to cry during this for some reason. It's like the emotional link between music and feelings is so strong, and the music was so powerful that i'm overcome with emotion to the point of tears. :'[
That's Vai for you. He's one of the VERY few composing virtuosos who pushed the limits, both equipment and spiritual/mental, to very ragged edge!
too much weed
hawkboy1792 man shut the fuck up
hawkboy - And that's what music is SUPPOSED to be. NOT a collection of notes, or even lyrics. But "communication". While the lyrics may or may not be fantastic, great songs always have a memorable melody. ;-)
@@yhwachpoetry4205 kinda rude
RIP to the technician who stringed that thing
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Well luckily there is only one neck with a floating tremolo, if all three would have that, then it would definitely take forever to string that guitar
JAJAJAJA
Have you not seen Rick Neilson's 5 neck guitar?🙃🙃🙃
you know luca stricagnoli?'
This G3 was a phenomenal show with 3 magistral different (like Style)guitarist players . Great concert...🎸
I keep coming back to this amazing perfomance. What a way to start a show! Incredible lineup. One of the top moments in history of Rock music. It's been a nice time to be around. Thanks Steve!!
3:39
U just got "Steve Vaied"
hahaha!😂
Haha! Fuck yes.
Thank you that was hilarious

Vai is simply incredible, that emotions he bring to you... And what a feeling and groove from this drummer !
12/3/23 and Steve still manages to crawl right inside and move your soul. One of the greatest guitarists of all time for sure.
This is just pure brilliance on so many levels. I couldn't speak English before I watched it and now somehow, I'm fluent.
This song here is LITERALLY what inspired me to pick up the guitar 4 years later after this video. Now, Ive been playing for 9 year and don't regret it one bit!
I dont think ive ever seen a man make love to a guitar before.
Well, now you have sonny
me neither🌚
Logan Ausherman Steve Vai buddy
Turd Fergeson who ever never heard of prince needs a reality check
***** thats my cats name
This song never fails to get me in tears. Not just for the otherworldly arrangement, but also for its title, which reminds me of my late mum. When I listen to it, I know for sure she's still by my side.
All these years and wow this is still really something!
Steve Vai is my favorite living guitarist period, but lets not forget his band. Especially Tony MacAlpime on the keys and guitar.
After watching this year's ago, I've come back to witness this beautiful sound of this guy sick guitar skills
And he actually plays the thing. That tour was a great one. Saw them in Nashville!
nowadays people actually don't know what is art what is feeling particularly me myself actually brought in tears as i was watching this so many feelings in it that actually brought me to the pass
If you have to play a show that has sets from Yngwie and Satriani, you bring out the big guns.
Yeah no kidding. Got to make a mark.
Imo he upstaged them with just this tune. It’s fucking awesome
Challengin af
How many strings your guitar need ?
Steve : yes

Well they're 25...
Yg membuat orang terpukau bukan karena skill gitarnya,, yg bikin terpukau itu espresi wajah sama montongnya bikin orang ketawa😂😂😂

And then everyone was completely spellbound for the rest of the time he was out there.
que música tan buena, le pone sentimiento a lo que toca, es un muy buen guitarrista este hombre
Every time I listen to him I must pick up my guitar
thank you, never forget that spirit as which i have done. I most deeply and spiritually regret all those missed opportunities for just simply enjoying the instrument, however many that may be. just always for Steves sake, NEVER EVER STOP PLAYING. EVER.
I love the attitude guys ✌🏽
He's just so damn good it's hard to find anything relevant to say afterwards.
Uno dei più grandi chitarristi di tutti i tempi, incredibile, senza parole. Immortale !!!! Grazie Steve !!!!!
His emotions are magic. The way he vocalizes and the way he elegantly feels for the instrument is something of true passion, Love you Steve
this is still one of the best ways to use a 3 neck guitar in 2018, the whole performance is stunning to say the least
especially the intro solo has some incredible melody lines that only a man like steve vai can play with that articulation, the guitar truly sings
This guy freaks me out! It's not the impossibility of his playing, it's his wild imagination which allows him to have such a unique voice through his guitar. Brilliant as always.
How do you compliment the world's greatest rock guitarist? Have the world's greatest bass player join him on stage. Masterful performance!
