WWF and WCW both have shows in Los Angeles this week on the same night. WCW is treating it like an internet PPV and will be doing live audio commentary on their website (no video because, well, it's 1997. Think of how much of a pain in the ass live video streaming still is now sometimes, then subtract 20 years). They're also promising a confrontation (but not a match) between Hogan and Sting. As for WWF, their show will feature Bret Hart's return to the ring and a bikini contest with Sunny, Sable, Marlena, and Chyna. According to WWF officials, ticket sales are neck and neck, while WCW claims to be several thousand tickets ahead of WWF. Both sides are claiming that the other is heavily papering the shows. For what it's worth, Dave says that despite the perception that WWF is the #2 company, the truth is that they still consistently outdraw WCW on house shows. And the advance ticket sales for Summerslam, which is still over a month away, has already made more ticket money than WCW has ever made for any show
This was without a doubt the genesis of the wwf product taking off and becoming the attitude era.Brett Hart was just as important to that era as any other wrestler at the time. From summer slam to survivor series, most important time period for wwf...period.
One of my all-time favorite ppvs! Can't wait to hear Bruce talk about the chair shot that fueled the Bret vs Shawn rivalry before the Montreal Screw job! Time to dive in!
I remember this entire event. Every year it comes up on the 3rd i take time to reflect on the family memory of watching it. I'll always think of it as my favorite PPV event.
Same. I had stopped watching regularly and got hooked channel surfing on the Raw after the Rumble when I saw the intensity. Unfortunately the week of Summerslam we moved and the cable package did not include USA network. So I was stuck with WCW until we got DirectTV in 2001.
R.I.P. Brian Christopher. Every Tuesday night at the Louisville Gardens in the mid 90s, he entertained the shit out of me and even let me hold his USWA championship in the middle of the ring once for photos. That title was heavy as shit... or maybe I was just weak as fuck as a 12 yr old. Well.....you know
Classic stuff right here! Great memories, always felt wwf was better during this time than 2000's and beyond even with a less stacked roster. Also, can you highlight at the abysmal In your house DX next?
If the nWo hadn’t taken over, I believe 1997 would be known as a landmark year for the WWF and they would have had better revenue and other key metrics
1997 was great year WWE was never close going out of business worst they been second ratings but they were beating WCW house show PPV buyrate and live gate
Vince; Bret if its about the money go get the money and use me as leverage. 1 month later Vince; Bret, the only thing that is coming between us is Ted Turner's money. WTF?!?!
Really nice tributes from Bruce to those recently pasted away wrestlers at the start of this. Loved this episode. Some great stories and priceless impressions. This is surely one of the best ever Summerslam. I'd say top three along with 2002 and probably 91. 91 top to bottom isn't as good, but it's just one from my youth I enjoyed watching a lot and it has a bit of everything.
notice how conrad mentions how business increased in 1995 to 1996 and even more so in 1996 to 1997. Does anyone notice that prichard agrees but he never points out that it was bret doing
Another great show from the number 1 tag team going. Also everybody knows Bret screwed Bret that will never change. I'm still hoping you guys do an episode on the ruler of the world Sid
andrew berube How did Brett screw brett? Because vince couldn't pay him? Because offered to take less money to stay? Because he wouldn't drop the belt to someone who wouldn't put anyone else over?
Must Conrad put a negative spin on everything?!!? WWE is a professional company and damn near everything they do has a polished clean look. Conrad talks down to them with his "you guys". Did he even like the product? If you actually listen to Meltzer shows from back in the day, you'll see he actually enjoys the show. The problem with STW is we get some weird mixed perspective of Conrad reading Meltzer, asking Bruce. It can be very frustrating and because Bruce often comes from a defensive stance, we don't get true accounts and straight answers.
*Once again I have TH-cam Red & ONLY on this channel whenever I turn off my phone's screen the video shuts off! Recently I got a comment blaming Dave Meltzer..starting to believe it now!* 🤔😂
Something no one ever mentions, did Owen Hart ever do a sit out piledriver like the one he did on Austin here? I can't say I remember him ever doing that move in any of the many matches I've seen of his.
He's done it in a few matches in Japan, and I'm 90% sure he's done it at least once in the WWF. I can more clearly remember him doing the jumping tombstone piledriver though.
I love Owen but it was an unnecessary spot. It wasnt going to make or break the match in concept and it progressed no sort of storyline or focal point...a chair shot with Anvil or Bulldog distracting the ref would have suffice enough.
He has done the sit-out piledriver a few times but I think he decided to do it at this show on the fly...he probably had Steve up and thought damn Taker is in the main so I'll do a sit-out style and boom
Maître Renard It was a common Hart family spot, starting with Dynamite Kid I think, he used to do the tilt a whirl off an Irish whip into a Tombstone or a back breaker It was used less as Undertaker became a more prominent fixture with using it as a finisher, but Owen used to do the spot IIRC Bad decision on Owen's part to drop to his butt instead of his knees though

Chris Terry they already had a professional match at Survivor Series 96 and they had a no holds barred match at Wrestlemania 13. You think the fans would wanna see another professional match? On the other hand... Shawn & Bret have a real feud & they never had a special stipulation match yet. That would happen at Wrestlemania 14. Hell in the cell probably to keep hart foundation & dx out. Shawn has a way of making matches memorable as well as Bret.
TheMadStork83 Your talking storyline wise. How will the match be though?? It’s gonna be the same that you saw in Survivor Series 96 & Wrestlemania 13 combined. Let me ask you this...Stone cold vs. undertaker...classic match or HBK vs. undertaker? My point is hbk knows how to impact a match especially with boring wrestlers like a Bret, diesel, hogan, tic flair who do the same shit.
Yeah I would have also loved to seen Austin vs Hart 3 at WM 14 for reasons already mentioned. Idk who that would have put HBK against. Maybe it could have been a triple threat.
TheMadStork83 Actually, a WM 14 match between Austin and Bret would've been Austin vs Hart IV, their 3rd match took place after WM 13 at IYH: Revenge Of The Taker, that's if you don't count their no holds barred RAW match after the IYH match The IYH match is underrated I think, it deserves more credit and even while it's lesser than their first 2 ppv matches, it's a worthy addition to the Austin vs Hart legacy...for me it's on par with the famous Steamboat vs Flair trilogy I would've loved to see Austin finally get a big clean win on Bret at WM 14 to give their feud the proper ending it deserved, pass the torch properly to Austin leading into the Stone Cold era, it would've been much better than what we ended up getting, and it made more sense
Ill never forget that night i was there live that night was impotant to stone colds career because once he wasnt able to wrestle he was able to buold on personality while clashing with the evil mr mcmahon
Of course it was a work lmao. Just look at all the angles they ran afterwards. Bret being ''screwed'' was a major major storyline before and after. Nobody got screwed!! they all made out like gang busters.

This was a good pay per view. I loved the WWF Championship match. I was nervous with them trying to tell multiple stories at once and the match would be a mess. I think sometimes people forgot who good Bret was as a singles wrestler. He and Undertaker had great chemistry those 2 told a great story. I cant believe Vince mixed business with politics after the steel cage match. To me, he needed to do something to stall while they were taking down the steel cage. He was kissing the governors ass for bringing WWF back to New Jersey. That million dollar contest was so rigged it sucked. I knew when Bruce said they had no intentions on giving away a million dollars. Although, I would have laughed if somebody had picked the right key cause they would have had to pay them. Vince was panicking cause he wanted Bret to finish his career in WWF. He was nervous as hell after losing Scott and Kevin to WCW he didnt want to lose no more top caliber superstars.
As a kid and a huge Hitman fan, this mainevent is etched in my mind for life.
Me too. I remember all the promo leading up to that match. Bret Hart saying he would never wrestle in the USA if he lost
