I love this video. You show how to cook sticky rice the same way my friends cook. I used to live with a family from Laos, and they cooked sticky rice each day, and deep fried beef, with a salad made from shredded cucumbers and shredded carrots with peppers, like juice, vinegar, salt, and little amount of sugar. It was always very delicious.

To my fellow diabetics: be **VERY** careful when eating this. Monitor your blood glucose a half-hour before and two hours after. Maybe even try a just small portion first to see how your insulin-dependent metabolism processes it. Stay healthy, folks.

I read an article that suppsedly letting it cool allows the carbs to do some thing that your body can'y process it like sugar as much anymore, and I'd read that on a n article for diabetics. Don't quote me, but google it

Thank you so much for your video. I have the cooking basic, and keep searching on here on how to clean your cooking basket. The rice sticks on the basket. I actual used oil to keep the rice from sticking. There are numerous videos on cooking the basket rice, but nothing on how to clean the basket afterwards. If anybody knows how to do this please comment. I usually just wash it the best I can. Thank you.

Six years later, and this video is still useful. 😁 There are two ladies from Thailand that live in a very small town near me in NW Minnesota. The little grocery store had the aluminum pot and the bamboo basket, so I bought them. Unfortunately, those ladies didn't tell me to flip the rice, so the results were not great. Now, I want to try it, again! 👍🏼

I lived in Hawaii for s few years when I was a child, and seeing that rice basket to keep it warm all day sure brought back some great memories. I used to run around the neighborhood with my friends and we'd stop by lots of different houses and the women of lots of different ethnics (Hawaiian, Laotian, phillipino, etc.) would be sitting on the floor with their baskets of sticky rice, and all kinds of mango, pineapple, pork, chicken, peppers... 😋 We could grab a handful of rice and whatever else we wanted, squish it into a ball, and take it back outside with us to play. It was the best time of my life! Now, I'm all grown up and love cooking sticky rice for my hubby...and he certainly loves it, too. 😂

The thing that i dont like is that sometimes the sticky rice has some sort of small threads from the bamboo steam thing, so we have to be very careful when eating it. Other than that its good I made some today, I am mexican but love hmong or any type of asian food, I think I got some asian blood too. :)

  • @drlegendre

This is a great guide. I always thought you used a piece of clean, light cloth to bundle the rice in the basket, but she doesn't use one.
Btw - the word that you might not understand is "soak". You need to soak the rice several hours before cooking, maybe twice as long if it's last-years crop.
