The idea of floating away into the darkness of space, is a terrifying thought, a thought that would definitely cross every astronaut's mind while spacewalking. This kind of situation is normally seen depicted on the big screen, in movies like Gravity.
But what would happen if you really did float off into space?
Well Space agency's like NASA do have safety protocols to prevent float away astronaut situations from happening. When an astronaut steps outside of the international space station, for example, they are attached to the spacecraft at all times with a retractable 26-meter braided steel tether, which has a tensile strength of 1,100 pounds. But If this strong tether was to fail, the astronauts can then engage the "SAFER". (Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue). It is a small, emergency jet pack system, worn during a spacewalk and provides free-flying mobility to return to the space station. If however the "Safer" failed or the astronaut wearing it was unconscious and could not operate the jet pack, then the only hope would be that the other members of the space station could start a rescue mission. But this rescue effort would be tricky, as there is currently no spacecraft that could be used to retrieve the float away astronaut. So if the tether snapped, the jet pack malfunctioned and your astronaut space buddies failed to rescue you, then you would float off in the direction according to whatever forces were acting on you when you broke loose. You would be completely weightless, potentially spinning and no amount of kicking or doggy paddling would save you. The Earths gravity would trap you in an orbit around the planet and if your spacesuit was still sealed, you would have to experience this terrifying fate for up to 8 hours, as you wait for your oxygen supplies to run out.
However If your suit had become damaged during the incident that caused you to float away, your trip into space would be massively cut short. Exposure to outer space would cause you to become unconscious within 15 seconds, Your blood and other fluids would boil and then freeze because there is no air pressure. Your boiling fluids would cause your body would swell up, perhaps to twice the normal size and all this would happen within a few minutes.
However, If you floated away from your station at the right angle and velocity then you might even be set for a collision course with Earth, but you wouldn't make it anywhere near the surface because the Earth's atmosphere would cause you to burn up on entry, just like a falling meteor. Thankfully Nobody currently has ever had to experience this terrifying fate of being afloat away astronaut and even though there have been some close calls in the past, the astronaut's safety equipment has prevented a situation like this from happening. Agency's like NASA are confident that a float away astronaut will not happen and I for one, hope they are right.
Just imagine floating there, going around and around. No noise, nothing. Just you and the sound of you breathing, looking down at Earth and waiting for the end to come any second. Terrifying, yet beautiful.
FilthyChance that would be the best/worst moment of anyone's life

Even far from Earth in space my grandmother would come if she somehow gets the news that I am hungry.
Kevin banter!
Kevin you had an ideal than said nah she would still come back

Kevin Exactly!
My grandmother was from India, she's no more. It seems like you're talking about my grandmother.
A fate that is far more scary then getting lost in the middle of the ocean.
Jizz Lord Correct but in space you also have to worry about Black holes
Jizz Lord Yeah you’re actually pretty correct, but the thought of it is still scary.
Nup.. if you have ever had a encounter with a great white you would choose space.
Speaking from experience... I haven't been in space but I've been circled by a shark as big as a small bus and it's fukn terrifying.
@@Mr-Damage space is much scarier. Floating through the darkness of outerspace endlessly, cant force yourself to go back, while you're getting far far away, struggling to survive as Earth gets smaller and smaller as you get farther. Nobody there to save you unless...
At least with the oceans we know roughly how deep they are. Space is simply completely infinite
This is so terrifying. When I watch these I feel like im there and it's happening right now but in reality in eating oreos and watching this at 2:52 am. These videos have a way of making me imagine it so well.

I never intended that it would be painless, only brief, Hey, how about you try it out and wear a gopro.
I prepared myself for death when I joined the Navy, I was a Gunner's Mate, If it blew shit up, I was involved in it. My life expectancy was 2 minutes in a shooting war, I was a 50 Cal. gunner on a landing craft off of the USS Spiegel Grove LSD 32. My ship was involved in the Mercury programs atlas 7 return to earth. I am proud of who and what I have become, You shouldn't sit behind a computer and blindly and ignorantly judge someone. It makes you look, well, not so smart. Bravado? I wouldn't call it that. I just overcame my fear of death. that's all. Whatever you want to call it, it's sure not empty, it has substantial meaning to me. Ive dealt a lot with pseudo-intellectuals like yourself, All narcissistic ego and nothing to back it up, the one that's always left face down in the parking lot.

They should invent a “return home” guidance system in the suit that controls the jets sending you back to the space station if you drift away. Like we have on drones. A return home programming and button.
Singh is King this genius guy. Give em more likes ☆ 《- this star is a pun
There would have to be a technologically advanced suit that could to the descent down the atmospheres
Already exists. It's called the "SAFER".
1. The space station is a spaceship, they can just fly to you. It maneuvers to avoid debris almost every day.
2. The Space station has a spaceship attached to it. They can just fly that to you.
3. The big assed near unbreakable rope thing is going to return you to home.
4. If you are unconscious, odds are you are dead from a leak. But they can still get you (see 1-3)
They have even better than that now.
Imagine a dead astronaut orbiting the earth for many years.

Fuck waiting 8 hours. I'm taking off my helmet.

hahahahahahaha
I would take it off one i have no oxigen left
Are you kidding? With the helmet on, you would eventually just lose consciousness. But consider the view of Earth you would get to enjoy. If I had a terminal illness, and it were possible to die in space, it wouldn't be a bad way to go. It's not the lack of oxygen that would get you. It's the buildup of CO^2 that would actually kill you.

There should be a system onboard the space station where someone could log into your suit and guide you home via the jet pack you are wearing if you do end up unconscious and are unable to control it yourself
Blahammad Ali that won’t work because there is no gravity therefore the astronaut will be pushed to a random direction in space. I also don’t think we will have a technology to log into a space suit and somehow control it in a way.
Blahammad Ali hopefully he wouldn’t be the prankster type. The last thing you hear maybe him chuckling and saying “watch this”.
Or you could just call an Uber?
Gacha Show it’s very possible, we have remote technology, and I think gravity is irrelevant in this situation.
If we can have remote control of the Mars rover I think we can definitely have remote control over a space suit to guide back towards the space station.

You would only experience that sensation for a matter of second because remember, the ISS is travel in in a low earth orbit at 17,500 mph. In your space suit since you are smaller than the space station, you would travel faster than that and would burn up in a matter of second and you would become a shooting star.

Ugh.. I’d rather not. Just the thought makes me sick.
How about this for a idea. A rocket based net which has weights on its corners. When fired towards a float-away astronaut, it opens up, deploying its wide net, and as it hits the astronauts, the weights on the corners continue forwards until they become tough and meet back together. If magnets are attached to it, it can seal it self and then be reeled back to the space station.
There is no gravity in space
And......Would Magnets Work ?? Your argument Wasn't Very Specific ??
Ryan Power Yea that's what I was implying, Magnets wont work. You need gravity for magnets to work. Magnets are a pulling force used by gravity.
Electric and magnetic forces are very slightly stronger in a vacuum than in air. Air is slightly polarizable and can move to partially shield the forces. But the effect is so weak, you'd need high precision instruments to measure it. By creating a magnetic fields which affect circulating currents (other magnets). These require no material medium for their transmission. So yes, magnets do work in outer space, and im some cases, even better than on Earth.
But how about this as another idea. Electromagnets. Power can be run by cables which lead back to the tether's point of origin and can power the magnets. Thus it can work in any part of space, not just around a quantity of mass that generates a magnetic field like Earth.
Last Shadow too sciencey
This shit gives me anxiety

"Thankfully nobody currently has ever had to experience this terrifying fate of being a float away astronaut."

Gravity movie reference hehehehe
Victor Von Deathstroke George Clooney is a asswipe.
And some soviet astronauts from the 50's. But this time it's not fiction

I could fart my way out though
HAHAHHA XDDD
That could probably kill you, saying how the fart would stay in the space suit.
Oh, so they can cover your death with "Death by flatulence."
"Uh, no, he didn't *technically* die from being separated..."
Emily would probably save on the insurance payout.
Imagine floating away on space far far away from the earth and then a big UFO appearing in front of you
OBSCURA just magic. Super bombed out of it. The space helmet should have a self smoking device attached to it . Hit the q button and away you go ...🤓🚀
*Astronaut looses grip and starts floating away*
Space: "You know the rules and so do I."
I still wish the intro music would be different. I can't stand that bang that has nothing to do with the nature of this channel. Though the video itself is great! Keep it up bud.
it should be like the music he plays through out the vid
+SpilldeM i love his intro lol

He'd die there I saved you 4 minutes.
Thanks
Did u just assume the astronauts gender?
J Cole WOW I NEVER WOULDVE THOUGHT OF THAT
Oh, really?? I tought he was going to become a human-like asteroid
J Cole makes bland music
The thought of being surrounded by everything that has ever existed is scary
I mean technically speaking, if you were to get thrown off at a low enough velocity, pointed in the right direction of course, you could potentially collide back with the station after an orbit or two around Earth. This is due to the circular motion of orbits. You arent traveling linearly. If you were to get jettisoned from around the CG of the station at a 45 degree angle to the surface below, and be ejected at a low enough velocity you could theoretically only change the eccentricity of your orbit. This means the period of your orbit stays the same as your station meaning you'd meet back up with it in approximately 90 minutes once you completed your rotation about the Earth. This obviously wouldn't be very likely following the randomness of such an act as being ejected from a spacecraft. One cool bit of information is that if you get ejected at a low enough velocity, you may stay within a visible range of the space station the entire time. As you lower in your orbit, you fall away from the station, but with that downward motion you also transfer some of your potential energy into kinetic. This means you gain speed and pass the station. Once you gain a substantial amount of speed and come around the curvature of the planet, you'll find that you reach an equilibrium of altitude decrease to rate of velocity change. This would be the periapsis of your orbit. If the space station were directly above your head at the time of periapsis, assuming your orbital characteristics were within a certain amount of error, you might still be able to circle around back to the space station at a low enough velocity to be caught by a fellow astronaut, and brought back in The Martian style (the book way that is, the movie method was much more theatrical and subject to failure).
Phil Davis , with 8 hours of oxygen, you could do 5 orbits before running out.
Do try to comprehend before you declare things to be BS.

nice math brother 🙄

I can't believe that there isn't an Astronaut Rescue Drone on the ISS
Nicky L a drone but there is no air for the blades to spin cause everything is weightless
Use crossbow and rope, cheaper lighter easier, and never fail also infinite range and accuracy
bax bu that actually sounds plausible. Why hasn’t this been tested and if so, what are the reasons against..
Raspberry because there is no point. something like this is not likely to happen. rather put more effort into preventing a disaster from happening at all instead of wasting resources providing means to alleviate it.
itzamia lmao you can’t use jets in space more like a box with some RCS thrusters on it

You are right, no one has died floating away from a spacecraft. But for those who are curious, astronauts have died in space from losing pressure as you described. (I'll let you google it though)
Three Soviet cosmonauts expired from vacuum exposure upon reentry.

Duncan Wood Unwarranted hostility. Why?
Why don't they throw something into space and put a live camera on it it could be interesting.
