  • Orvieto is a small city in central Italy, perched on a craggy volcanic bluff high above fields filled with olive groves and cypress trees.
Orvieto’s skyline is dominated by a huge, 13th century Gothic cathedral that is one of the great masterpieces of medieval architecture.
The cathedral was built here at the pope’s directive, after a doubting priest’s Eucharist bread bled, and stained a linen cloth. The Pope was staying in Orvieto and when he saw the cloth, he declared it a miracle and promised a cathedral to house the miraculous relics.
The day we visited, a film crew was working in the plaza and the cathedral was closed.
Orvieto was a major center of Etruscan civilization and is honeycombed with Etruscan caves. The Etruscans used the caves for pressing olive oil, sheltering animals, and firing pottery.

    What's with the flying lion?

The lion is one of four bronze sculptures on the Duomo facade which symbolize the four Evangelists. The lion represents St. Mark (San Marco). The other three are the Angel (St. Matthew), the Eagle (St. John) and the Bull (St. Luke). The sculptures are attributed to Maitani and his followers. Did you not try the famous Orvieto wine?

We're glad you enjoyed our video. Isn't Orvieto lovely? Alas, we did not try the wine - I've heard it is excellent. We're not "foodies", so the local cuisine doesn't get reviewed - but I believe roast pigeon is a classic dish in Orvieto - that would have been interesting.
