    I had the same experience landing at Heathrow in a 757 in the early 90's. As soon as we had all three on the ground, it blanked out to zero visibility with massive flashes of lightening. We couldn't see the exit and had to proceed very slowly to the very end of the runway before exiting. The tower was not happy, but still put all traffic on hold for 20mins!

    When you see this in front of you a few things should come into your mind immediately. The first one is possible wind shear, going from headwind into a vertical shear (pushing you down) and then a tailwind. Second is that you will probably have a flooded runway, so possible skidding and little breaking action. Thirdly, there is no option for a go around unless you want to fly straight into a thunder storm which is never a good idea. In other words, this is the time that you simply take the correct option and that is to wait until this thunderstorm passes by. Thunderstorms are fast moving storms, so in about 5 tot 10 min it will have passed and you can make you approach. No need to play hero and hope all will go well. I still remember the Delta flight 191 at Dallas in 1985, which also tried to land in a thunderstorm, killed 137 people.

      Delaying the landing was the call I would have made, and did make in watching the video. Yes, you can make it down but the risk of flying into wind shear simply isn’t worth a 10-minute delay.

Asked ATC how it looked and I’ll never forget the reply, “looks good here, I’m in a concrete brick building on the ground the question is, how does it look to you seven miles out at 5000 feet.” Pause....I chickened out and asked for radar vectors to the alternate. But if you were to install a camera it would be in the front and it would have no protection so if there was a crash it would be damaged or destroyed.

    I encountered similar conditions on my last flight, 35 years ago. I landed in Amarillo TX. The ground crew took the airplane to the nearest hangar, without fueling it, and without asking. We were stuck until the next day. My last flight was also the most exciting. This was all VFR. The airfield went IMC right after we landed.

    You know what’s awesome about typical convective weather? Unless it’s associated with a front... it will probably pass in 15 minutes. I’ve flown Cessnas in conditions like this... simply waiting for the storm to pass the airport before landing in VFR conditions and calm winds.

    On Friday, 02August1985 a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar crashed at Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport killing 134 passengers and crew. One person on the ground was also killed. The National Transportation Safety Board's post accident findings are as follows:
    "PROBABLE CAUSE: "The flight crew's decision to initiate and continue the approach into a cumulonimbus cloud which they observed to contain visible lightning; the lack of specific guidelines, procedures and training for avoiding and escaping from low-level windshear; and the lack of definitive, real-time windshear hazard information. This resulted in the aircraft's encounter at low altitude with a microburst-induced, severe windshear from a rapidly developing thunderstorm located on the final approach course."
    Of course, you are entitled to your own opinion as to the wisdom of this particular flight crews actions shown in this video.

    • @joeyjamison5772
      @joeyjamison5772 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, I thought the same thing, unless he was fuel critical, I wouldn't have continued the approach into a thunderstorm with lightning, wind, heavy rain and extremely low visibility. You're just asking for it.

      +steveo1kinevo . Why not take the safer option. Abort the approach rather than flying yourself into a corner which is very difficult to get out of? From the radar screen it looks like they have plenty of options to turn away, join a holding and come back in when the thunder storm has passed.

      +jeff jj "based on experience" is one of the common mistakes we learn to avoid during every human factors course during ATPL training. Everyone please look exactly at position 0:11 in this video. Early on, it shows the ND screen (navigation display) displaying 70% of the runway in heavy rain (red color)!!! The pilots had plenty of time to avoid this thunderstorm and wait it out, WITHOUT having to fly near it or through it. The pilots missed this opportunity and instead opted to continue their very dangerous approach into red-painted t-storm activity, which was clearly shown on their navigation screens. Both of these pilot should have been fired for this. They put the lives of everyone on board at extreme risk. They were given the tools to help them fly safely around t-storm activity and they chose to ignore those tools and fly directly into the heart of a t-storm!!

    • @KirukatoMirekuru

      They should have done it but they were running out of fuel. You think that they fill up the tanks to full, But they only fill up the tank so you can just about to reach the Airport. (And its Cheaper!) They weren't putting everyone in danger. If they kept on waiting until the storm goes away, THAT will make the Passengers and the Pilots in danger. Plus Pilots are very professional and can hadle this type of stuff. Just trust the pilots. They go back to training every year to check if they can still fly the aircraft in different type of weather and scenarios.

      The WX reports should have called for this stuff and they should have had alternate fuel. If not and yes that happens then they should have considered another airport or waited even 15 minutes to try the approach. If things were the way you say then this country is flying in an amateur and Mickey Mouse fashion which is the way many if not all South American countries are willing to accept.

    • @airman329
      @airman329 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Playing Devils Advocate here. If you notice on the ND the WX looks bad for sure, but it’s moving away from the airport. Notice the winds on the ND. Only issue I see them having is if a go around was necessary. Then they would have been in the thick of it. Airlines in the US make these landings daily, with 300 pax on board, and never the worse off. By the time they landed all the heavy rain, hail, and crazy downburst would have passed as they were approaching the cell from behind. With that being said, I would have done a couple of turns in the hold to give this WX a few miles distance.

So they changed course, little they know is that, they are heading to an even bigger zone of red colour on screen. As a result, they flew straight into a thunderstorm, the thunderstorm shut down the entire the aircraft and the aircraft fell out of the sky
