I would leave needle down just for your safety purposes. But it is not necessary in order to protect the machine. And the presser foot can be up or down, it doesn't matter.

Hello, The most common ussie people have with the zipper foot is trying to put it on backwards. Make sure the fork looking prongs are facing the back of the machine when putting the foot on.
