    Oh man, those brown carts take me back to the days of playing Atari computer at the library.

    I had the XE when I was younger. Jut hit power without a game in it and you can play Missile Command. Same exact version that you just played.

    I've never seen hat model XE before, cool! I remember getting an Atari 400 when they were current, and I was ecstatic! Missile Command both at home and in the arcade was such a great game, but the level of difficulty made it pretty frustrating, at least for me.

    I had the XE Game System as my first console/computer. If I recall correctly you just pressed start without a cart in it to start Missile Command.

      Nope without a cart in the system and powered off. You hold down the select button and power it on. Keep it held till missile command pops up.

      I had the xe, I played missile command for hours. It was hard to find xe games though. Did yours come with flight simulator 2 as well?

    • @nicksobo7601
      @nicksobo7601 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya came with that and Bug Hunt. I also had Hard ball, Rescue on Fratulas, Ball Blazer, Larry Bird vs Dr J, I had or have I should say a few more but can't remember off the top of my head. Its all boxed up

    • @joemel2
      @joemel2 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Sobo yeah we had bug hunt with the awful light gun, pitfall 2, pole position, david's midnight magic (pinball), and flight simulator 2 which I remember being super hard to play.
      We probably had some other games but didn't find out it would play other Atari system games till quite late on and XE games we really hard to find!

    this is not an Atari Home Computer...its the XEGS (Game System) console based off the 65XE home computer

    Don't worry I did not realise that Missile Command was built into the XEGS either until recently, but if you remove the keyboard it boots into it. I think you can hold down one of the keys as well with the keyboard plugged, but yes I just use the cartridge as well.
    You can use a trackball, I have one of the Wico track balls and use it to play this game and also centipede on both the 2600 and the Atari 8-bits.

    You need to buy "Missile Command TB" from AtariAge - atariage.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=31. It has true analog support for your trackball controller:
    _"Prior to this hack, you could already plug in a Trak-Ball and use it with the 2600 version of Missile Command, but it wasn't true analog control with variable speed and direction. Instead, it simply reproduced the eight directions and one speed of a joystick, no matter how the ball was rolled. But now Missile Command TB allows you to switch the Trak-Ball from Joystick mode to true Trak-Ball mode, and gain full analog control over the aiming cursor. Speed, direction and distance all respond exactly the way they should. This really transforms what was already an excellent game into a much more satisfying arcade-like experience"_
    Be sure to order the NTSC CX-22 version.

    Turn it on either holding down select or options. I can't remember which one, but that's how to get missile command on the xe

    Failed your civilians? You merely awarded them superpowers by exposing them to radiation.

    growing up playing this during the Cold War added a certain mystique to the game, kids could imagine the government secretly tracking your hi-scores, then being asked to protect the country using an anti-nuclear missile defense system that looks just like the game... damn those Russian triangle dodgy thingies

    This is another one of those games I really loved in the arcade but completely sucked at.

    I think I've only played this on the Game Gear. I had an arcade collection back in the day that had missile command, centipede, and pong. I also had pac-man - which was probably the first time I played that game, too. A lot of good memories with the game gear. :)

    I bought a 5200. Great machine. Too bad the analog controllers were too delicate. Then I bought a 400 for about $150. Great computer, great game machine. The games were very good implementations of arcade classics, including Battlezone, my all time favorite. I miss Atari.

    I heard that the Atari Computer version of Missile Command has online multiplayer, global leaderboards, and local co-op via Wi-Fi through the Atari's AtariNet Ethernet port.

    since the Atari joystick (CX40) is compatible with the XEGS, does the 2600 Trak-Ball controller work as well?
    I would assume so...

      What got you into retro games at such a young age? I have the nostalgia factor going for me, being that I'm 33. I grew up with these classic systems, they make me feel like a child again. I've always been curious what could get somebody so young in to classic games, other than them being amazingly good.
