I always felt so bad for Alex, even getting good grades, straight A's on tests and trying her best, Claire always turned her attention to Hailey and every little and meanless thing she did, leaving Alex behind.

It happens a lot, parents tend to ignore their 'smart' children because they feel like they don't need as much attention as the screw up of the family. My boyfriend always did a lot better in school than his sister and his sister was always a bit of a walking disaster so his parents basically neglected him for years and are now wondering why the bright child is developing mental issues as well

Yeah, and i think the saddest part was when Alex won almost all the school awards and Luke didn't want to hurt mannys feeling and claire said that he deserve the integrity award and that she is proud of him. AND Alex walks through wearing all her medals and saying 'maybe next year alex', it was actually meant to be a funny thing bjt it was so sad, they never told alex that they are proid of her while they always tell luke and hailey they are proud of them

I rewatch Modern Family all the time and what you described is my reaction to this episode every time.
Alex is my favorite character in the show, followed by Mitch and then Phil. I think that's because Alex and Mitch are the only characters who seem like they are human. They are complicated and have real depth. Next to them, all the other characters seem like just caricatures (including Phil). I like Phil because he's the funniest and he gives the show heart.

I love Modern Family but sometimes I feel like Alex and occasionally Mitch are the only characters on who feel like they are real human beings with complex emotions. Everyone else (including Phil whom I love) are just caricatures, especially towards the final seasons.

@@wasd_totallyreal_dsaw9865 There are one or two moments for all characters (except maybe Lily and Joe). Even Cam had one when they get denied a baby but actually Mitch outperformed him in that scene.
But yes, Jay gets a lot of moments too right after Alex and Mitch. However, I think Jay's character growth stopped in early seasons. He was supposed to be the stuck up old man with a hot wife and a step son that he had to put up with. In fact, the only purpose of having Manny as a character was to give Jay that growth and they kinda do it in the first 3-4 episodes of Season 1.

As an academic burnout who just honestly gave up with trying and just maximizing my happiness this episode made me cry. I feel like some people just think if you're smart/responsible you can do it all and that's not true at all you eventually need a break and you'll fail just like anybody does but somehow someway the mistake is amplified when you do it and nobody really knows the strain it has on you.

No child or adolescent should have this much pressure on his/her shoulders. Phil and Claire were right in wanting to talk to her during this episode and it shows great parenting prowess, but I feel like the signs were there since forever and they just ignored them.
What's worse about this episode is that most of the people that put a lot of pressure on themselves go unchecked for years, only realising something might be wrong by their second or third divorce or when they're old and people are avoiding them.

Even though I’m not actually working in these things and I’m not getting formal academic education but I’m learning and I couldn’t be more happier... trust me guys it’s not worth it doing something for others, even if you liked being looked at as the smart one.. do something you actually love to do! ❤️

I rewatched this when just a few hours ago, my mom asked for the first time in a long time about my final year on college. I was surprised when she's asking me that but i felt so disappointed when i ask her why, she answer "because your three sister has successfully graduated within 3 years and you're almost 4 years, you're the last child and you should keep it up" then i answer "well, maybe i will be your first child to break the record". I answer that spontaneously as i thought she was cared for me.. which i think maybe a little bit but still... And yes, i always try to be a perfection like Alex even though i'm the last child. My sister is also a perfection. But then again, i realized i can't keep it up with them... But at the same time, i asked myself "am i going to embarrass myself if i'm late or what?" .. i can't explain my pressure to my parents because i know they won't understand well and if they do, they will try to ask me a lot of question, trying to solve my problem or just answer "just do it, why you have to be overthinking?" And both of this, it's... It's really annoying.... So i just smile, being quiet to do my things, so yeah i felt kinda alone. Trust me, i'm doing my best to graduate from college even though thinking about the future always makes me scared, i'm always scared that i'm going to failed... I.. i also try to believe in myself more because... I'm the only one who understand myself well... Sorry if my english is messed up, i just want to let out my anger tonight #lol hope everything will be okay tho...

I’m a middle child too and I have a big sister and a little one yet neither of them feels the pressure I feel, not academically or in the topic of success. I often ask why do I feel this while we grew up in the same household. I don’t why but I’m just built that way and I just want my mom and dad to say “I don’t know how you do it with this much to do and this much pressure. We understand you and we are proud of you.” (the way Claire did to Alex) Yet they never do. My dad motivates me to get better grades though doesn’t understands me when I want to work and not go out. When it comes to my mom…One moment I feel like she understands and then she starts arguing with me on why I feel so intense pressure. I really love my parents they are the best. However, they never REALLY understood me in any matter and treat me like I have anger issues. (because they dont understand the fact that I get angry because I am under HUGE pressure.) :/
On top of this I feel left out just because of this. Middle child syndrome is literally living and breathing me.

Seriously Alex was so ignored in the series, I know it was probably to mirror, ‘middle child syndrome’, but it just got so annoying when the writers would constantly focus on immature and selfish Haley and her stupid relationships, (with the exception of Andy).
When the writers realised they couldn’t have Haley end up with Andy because the actor was too busy, we had to put up with her really creepy relationship with the older weather guy before getting knocked up by Dylan of all people! It was just so cliche and predictable, I wish they had concentrated on Alex and given her major storyline instead.

It was probably because the show’s comedy leaned heavily on lighthearted hijinks and chaos, and the Alexes of this world are less likely to get themselves into those situations.

I honestly get and relate to a lot of what Alex says and goes through, but the thing I can just never stand about her is despite everything, she still puts herself above the rest of her family, and in more than one occasion has expressed this and insulted her family’s intelligence directly, it just… I don’t know, annoys me about how she says she has a lack of support and attention

The writers themselves put in a lot of humour about Haley, Luke and Phil being not so smart. Most of the jokes about Luke and Phil in particular don’t rely on Alex’s commentary.

It's not that asian kids are way smarter just that they are more hardworking because of their upbringing and as immigrant children feel the need to earn their place in a foreign country . Any how i gave up on this rat race a few years ago i don't really get stressed out of proportion now . Someone once told me that it is only you who can free your mind ironically enough that person was of Indian decent and now that i think of it one of the coolest guys i have ever met , wish we could have been friends back then .

One main reason why I hate Claire was that yeah it's important that when one of your kids wins a lot of stuff don't make the other kids feel bad about them not getting anything but she did it so much to Alex that she felt like she had to keep getting more, putter her through stress etc. Like when she got Luke that award and was so happy for him when Alex got a lot and didn't even say she was proud. SMH.

      @pdas4182 ปีที่แล้ว

But think of it from Claire's perspective though. She has to live in a house with 4 children (including Phil) and take care of them. Sure, Phil sometimes persevere as a Dad figure, but mostly he's a child too. And in the situation, there's only so much Claire can do. She knows Alex is smart and independent, so she focuses on the other two. She didn't know what Alex was going through because she's never been like Alex. And on this episode, she understands what it means to be Alex is thus she appreciates Alex in the end. Claire has been going through a lot the whole show and yet is a really good mom to her kids. Honestly, after Alex, Claire is my favorite character of the show.
Also, the not-so-smart kid's small achievements are definitely special compared to the smart kid's 100th award. Not saying one is better than the other, but both are just different.

I always really disliked Alex, but I think a big part of that was a fear of being like her. Moreover, treating others the way she did. I am really glad she had a few episodes like this one where she could redeem herself a bit
