  • I torture test two small chainsaws! The Echo DCS5000 56v battery powered chainsaw and the Ryobi 38cc gas powered chainsaw! If you were thinking about buying either saw, this is a MUST WATCH!
There's a lot of debate about the ability of a battery powered chainsaw like the Echo DCS5000 to compete with the power of gas powered saws of their rated size. Many don't think they can compete so I'm going to find out in this video!
I wanted to test the Echo DCS5000 against a similar sized gas powered chainsaw and in this video I do just that because my sister need some big 17 inch diameter fir rounds cut down for her woodstove and her friend and pianist had his 38cc Ryobi available to test out! Let's see which one is better!
Echo says the DCS5000 is equivalent to a 40cc gas powered saw and that might be true and I wanted to know. BY the end of this video you be the judge!

I picked up an echo DCS5000 this fall it came with a 2.5 and a 5 amp battery and charger for just under $500 CDN. I love it so much I left my little 16inch CHampion (not sure of the CC) on permanent loan with a buddy. In winter temperatures I can cut over half a face cord of poplar on one charge of the 2.5 amp . I can fill my halfton with poplar poles on less than one charge of the 2.5 amp. The battery will recharge in the time it takes me to unload the truck and have a bite to eat. I love that I don't need to carry gasoline with me. The saw always starts! In winter I'd keep the gasser in the house and there was always a faint stink of gas around it. That said, if I earned my living cutting big wood all day, I'd probably want a gasser, just from the speed of refueling etc. But for the casual user, one for a farmer or rancher to throw in the back of the chore truck, or a camper. yes it would be my first choice. I'd love to see a head to head like this with other electric saws. Thanks Bud.

The Echo DCS5000 is a great saw and I agree with your assessment. I see no need for a smaller gas saw with this around! ;) Sure, the Ryobi had a little more power but the Echo held it's own and with two batteries it will go all day ;)

Would never try to compare a brand new chain with a well used chain no matter how well you think you can sharpen a chain. Would love to see this comparison again with new chain on each saw.

I think that's a great point (I didn't realize I'd not swapped out the chain until after I started filming but mentioned it in the video) and I think a great idea! I'll have to tune up the 455 but I believe with a good new chain and a tune it will out perform the Echo. However, I really like the Echo still -- 2 years later!

I’m surprised the ryobi was faster! Very interesting 🤨

Me too! I think the Echo is a very good and well-made saw, but it isn't as powerful as a small gas saw.

For 17" wood you need a bigger saw. Either would be ok in 10"wood.

LOL I have a Husqvarna 572xp for bigger wood. I wanted to see how these little saw did side by side in a torture test 😉

@@TheOldJarhead makes more sense now….ha. I think the electric chainsaws are definitely handy for small projects. Probably a lot lighter too.

Not lighter (I mentioned that in the video) but definitely have their place! Specially during fire season.
