The reason he guided Aang majorly though was because of his knowledge regarding how the fire nation became a waring nation and how he was responsible for that. Korra on the other hand was brought up in a time of relative peace, and as such didn't need the guidance of the past Avatars as much.
I think u mostly have to seek out the past avatars Roku just appeared due to being the closest reincarnation to Aang's and Comite amps,well and Aang's affinity in the spiritual side cause that's what Air nomads normally long for and bro was already a monk when leaving the temple, it's just Korra's character that made the thing of a guide long gone, she's more physical not really intuitive maybe that's why her avatar state was less intense than Aangs but he still shared energy and spirit bending with her when she first bended air do it's not all bad
Despite having the same birthday, I don't think Sozin secretly wished that he wanted to be the avatar, seeing that becoming a fire lord has its responsibilities, but being the avatar too would overwhelm him. The way I see it, their friendship was like a scale, balanced, until they had that discussion which disrupted the balance of their friendship.

I still would like to have a prequel series where we get more adventures of the lives of Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, Yangchen, Szeto, & Salai. Sure, the comics & novels have expanded upon their lives as the Avatar, but it would be cool to see them in an actual series.
I see a lot of people in the comments saying how better it would have been if Roku just killed Sozin when he had the chance, but on the flipside; Imagine if Roku just took like, 10 minutes to TALK about the plan with Sozin when he first brought it up. I feel like this whole beef could have been settled if there was an actual conversation, instead of him just shutting it down right there.

To me, Sozin ;s a very Bismarckian figure: i.e.,what is right is what's right for his country--and I doubt that that developed AFTER he was already sixteen. He would have had to have known that the Avatar's responsibilities would directly conflict with advancing Fire Nation interests no matter what. I therefore doubt that he would have wanted it.
Roku was definitely a member of the nobility who resided in the capital city (his having such close proximity to Prince Sozin and the royal household since childhood is *_not_* something that would be afforded to one of peasant stock), though he makes no mention of his parents. My guess has always been that Roku was orphaned and subsequently raised within the royal household, but we don't know.
