    Thank you, thank you, thank you. I tried to program my dual outlet timer last night, then just tried to turn the display lights off...finally unplugged them. This morning I started searching for a "dual outlet for idiots" that just went on and off one time each day...couldn't find one. Found your video. You are a wonderful instructor for a complicated (I don't care if the manufacturers' say it is "easy") timer. Now I am all set!!! Once again, Thank You!

    In case nobody has mentioned this, with the exception of using standard time, this unit is identical to the Chicago Electric Digital Timer for Lamps & Appliances sold by Harbor Freight (which uses 24-hour military time) - SKU 95205. They're both probably made by the same manufacturer. Anyway, thank you so very much for taking the time to make this very informative video. It is concise and clear. Thank you for your efforts and good work.

    This HAS to be the BEST tutorial on this timer available to the public. A very MINOR critique is when you program event #1 "ON" setting....around 2:33 of this vid. You (mistakenly) say.... "Let's set this to go OFF at 7.30"......you mean to say, "Let's set this program 1 to go ..."ON" at 7.30. It was only a slip of the tongue....otherwise this is by FAR the BEST tutorial on this timer available under the many brands you show.
    Also this.....know whether you are on Daylight Saving Time ( March-Nov) or not. As you set the clock and the later event timing.....you can invoke DST by pressing BOTH HOUR and MINUTE....and when the "bubble" circle appears on the right of the screen....you're on DST. Do it again, the bubble disappears....and you are NOT on DST. This is great as it doesn't disturb either the basic clock setting or event prorgam setting,....it only adds or subtracts 1 hour to invoke the DST and back.

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info Will! Definitely a slip of the tongue. I think I added the DST info in the information section as someone else had pointed out I left it out. Cheers!

    Thanks for your video, very helpful. Harbor Freight sells this same timer under a different name of course. The timer uses military time or can be changed to 12 hour. Programming the timer to work within the same day is pretty simple; set the on time for 18:00 or 6pm and the off time for 22:00 or 10pm.
    But what if you only want to have the power off for 5 minutes each day beginning at 1:55 every day and restarting at 2:00pm? The problem you run into is your overlapping two days. The power needs to be immediately on and not stopped until the next day. Then it has to restart 5 minutes later.
    One option is to use 7 different programs that has the ON with today and OFF with the next day; ie Monday ON and Tues OFF, etc.
    What is more simple is to confine the ON and OFF times to one day and not confine yourself to the time and day in your time zone. Simply adjust the current time and day to a time zone west of you. If you're in the central time zone use the pacific time zone. With this timer you can set the ON time to be 0:03 and the OFF time to be 23:58. When it is about 2am Central the timer will turn off power and turn it back on.

      Great question and I apologize for not covering that. I have added an explanation to the description, but the solid black dot in the lower right indicates that DST (daylight savings time) is not turned on. To activate DST (aka, to “spring forward”) press the “Hour” and “Minute” buttons simultaneously and you’ll notice the current time will jump forward an hour and a clear dot will appear above the solid dot, but below the random dot. To deactivate DST, press the “Hour” and “Minute” buttons simultaneously and the current time will jump back an hour and the clear dot above the bottom solid dot will disappear. Thanks for the great question!

    I was losing my mind trying to program this thing. I'd figured out everything you went over in the first 6 minutes through reading the manual and testing it. What the manual does not tell you (accurately), and this video does, is what indicates that the random on/off feature is enabled. For some reason mine came with it turned on and the indicator does not flash. Thank you.

    Thank you, absolutely my friend! You saved me money but not throwing this very nice timer out the dang window because it did not come with a lick of instructions (just came in a cheap white box that said "made in china"). The timer I actually have is not a Vivosun brand. It's made by Century, but it's the same exact type model and can be set exactly the same. Thanks again my friend, I will enjoy all the bells and whistles of this cool timer because of your video. :)

      @@BruceAlanR I swear this timer has a mind of it's own. I've had it for 4 weeks and it was working flawless...until I had to change the timing again. lol I changed it from a 18/6 cycle to a 12/12 cycle and the timer would only stay ON (even when the program time was set and it was suppose to be OFF....it would still stay ON). I reset the timer with the little button but it kept doing the same thing (The actual time was 12:12am, I set it to come on at 6am/off at 6pm, but it was staying ON even though it was not 6am yet lol ). The only way I got it to work was to switch the timer from "auto" to "off", then set the program time, then switch it back to "auto" and then plug it into the outlet. If I had the device already plugged into the timer and tried to set the program time with it set to "auto" the programming time would not work (the timer would just stay on even though it was programmed to be off at that time). I'm thinking the problem was to have the timer set to "off" when I was programming it and then turn it to "auto" after it was plugged in the outlet. It can be so confusing using this timer, but it does work very good when it does work. :/

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree it seems this timer sometimes has a mind of its own. On my timer, the ON-AUTO-OFF button toggles: OFF->AUTO->ON->AUTO->OFF. This is important to note! If you plug in the timer during a programmed OFF time (meaning a time when power should be off to the outlets), you must toggle from OFF->Auto. If you plug in the timer during a programmed on time (meaning a time when power should be supplied to the outlets), you must toggle from ON->AUTO. For example, you set Program 1's ON time to 8:15PM for every day of the week.Then, you set Program 1's OFF time to be 8:30PM for every day of the week. You now plug in the timer and it's 8:20PM (which is between 8:15PM and 8:30PM... so power should be supplied to the outlets). If you only toggle from OFF->AUTO, the timer will not supply power until tomorrow night at 8:15PM. If you toggle OFF->AUTO->ON->AUTO, power to the outlets will be supplied until 8:30PM, after which time it will turn off. Hope that helps!

    Thanx Bruce...Could not figure out why my digital timer was not coming on as programmed...My current time and programming times were accurate but the Xmas window lights were not coming on at 4:30 pm as requested...Later on in your vid, you mention the random function which turns on the timer at different times...Eureka, somehow the tiny random button was on on mine and showing in my display even though I had never programmed it in there...Must have been the dog...LOL...Hit my hour button to erase it and voila, lights come on at 4:30 sharp daily...Driving me nuts for the last few days as all the other Xmas timers in the house all came on when requested (Woof never got to those yet)...Thanx and stay safe & healthy....

One thing I might add is that even after following these directions explicitly, your timer STILL DOESN'T WORK... press the reset button with a pencil, (that small one on the lower right side of the face), and start from scratch. My timer sat unused for a couple years and that's what it needed.
