  • Chris @TheWanderingBull shows detailed instructions on how make a 2" round porcupine and deer hair head roach. You will learn about different styles such as turkey beard roaches, flat roaches and teardrop roaches as well as the use of different materials such as deer hair, turkey hair, horse hair and blond porcupine hair.
    Using a loom, Chris demonstrates how to use the hitch knot with single-ply sinew to create a 7" strand of porcupine and deer hair. Then see how to attach it to a handmade yarn base. Finally see the way different styles of roaches are worn.
    Head Roach Headdresses are worn by men in a number of Native American tribes in New England, great lakes and Missouri River regions.

    It also helps to soak the ends of the porky hair in water while you are tying. It helps the ends be more malleable where they aren't bending too hard and gives more life to the roach without the hairs breaking over time.

    My resident porcupine was killed by another animal but I salvaged what I could. I sorted all the guard hairs and wondered what I could do with them. I probably don't have enough to make a full roach, but I would love to try. Maybe I can combine materials and make something unique. Thanks so much for the tutorial, this is such a beaitiful headdress.

      Hey, thanks for watching! You could start a roach and add to it as you get more hair. Or perhaps tuft it like moose hair on leather into a design.

      We don't have a video currently on how to make a shield, thank you for the suggestion! We are always looking for new ideas. Currently we have a video on painting raw hide. You could check that out. To make the shield, a whole hide would be dried over a fire very slowly making it very thick. If it is something you will be using during a dance and want a lighter piece, you could use a hoop and stretch it around that as a smaller shield. Hope this helps & thanks for watching!

    Osiyo. Do you know if the flat roaches were prevalent among the Tsalagi? Would you consider making a short video on the flat roach and its construction? -Wado🙏

    • @thewanderingbull9843
      @thewanderingbull9843  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The flat roaches were not prevalent for the Tsalagi, however through trading it it would have been worn by some. We don't currently have a video on how to make the flat roach, but the technique for tying the hair would be the same, and then you would put it between two pieces of leather. Please feel free to call the shop with any questions - 1-800-430-2855. We would be able to discuss it with you and send some pictures if needed. Thanks for watching!

    How many ounces of porky quills did this project take? If we were to make an 18 inch roach, how many punces should i order?

    • @thewanderingbull9843
      @thewanderingbull9843  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, thanks for watching! So for an 18" roach you will want to use porcupine hair and not quills. You will need approx. 3 ounces sorted - use the longer hair in the front, then medium length and shorter in the back. Please feel free to call the shop if you have any questions! 800-430-2855
