Paddy I had rats in my old yard and an old guy told me to mix plaster of paris and sugar on an old tray .. I tried it and it made a big difference in amount of them. The sugar attracts them to eat it and plater sets in their stomach Once a rat eats something they cant regurgitate it back out
Try and rig something up that will catch the seeds from your birdhouse/feeding table to catch any seeds falling, cut the food supply the rats will go elsewhere Paddy.

The rats are so intelligent aswell you know they know not to eat the poison … we have them they come off all the feilds as there digging up for new builds so the all over our estate in me gardens under the decking the absolutely horrible I went out to bleach me patio and wash me garden furniture down so me little boy could play in the garden as we have nice weather now and a saw one so we got it with the jet washer and jet washed under the decking horrible things
