Simple: He prefers the religious suspension of the ego towards death to the philosophical tending (which must -- unless you're a very gifted -- be consistent throughout life) towards the self in 'learning how to die'. And he only notes that a Christian framework -- not necessarily any one that's religious -- are still dominant in most Western views about suicide.

Montaigne's essay is just wonderfully profound! Anyone who hasn't read the essays, do so before you shuffle off the mortal coil!

I think the real question is to why we would seek meaning in the first place. I think that is an insatiable and unconscious drive and certainly not uniform.

to say that an everlasting life is meaningless is to say one's life is meaningless. "immortal life would be boring" this says more about you than it says about life

Would you care more for the grains of sand in the desert or the precious diamonds buried deep in the earth?

I dont agree fully about your theory of death..We mourn our own ignorant view of death...When someone dies we believe and assume we know what life is about..we ultimately don't and also no one will ever know...Is there an ego when someone bangs on the window and wakes us up when we are in deep sleep? No the ego appears through our conscious memory..we mourn what we think we know..

It's all infinite eternal return (Wikipedia: Eternal Return). How arrogant humans are. I've always wondered about the set elements, the earth, all the inert and already dead material that makes up the universe! What arrogance humans consumed with their mortality, what of all that is already dead, the stone, the sand, the water. Eternal return is the only fair infinitely possible forever-possibility. Everything recycles forever into everything forever.

How can suicide be dignified if a person runs away from life? It is far more dignified if a human being imbraces life how ever terrifing it may be. Atleast then we can admire his spirit for his bravery.

Because it goes against nature to take ones like. There is great fear even of the contemplation of the act. It's just as easy to run from death as it is to run from life except that I think that most all run from death and some run from life.

Atleast 'we' can admire his spirit...why should they care about what you think while they are in excruciating pain? Whats bravery worth if it amounts to nothing but more pain?

How does accepting my mortality make me more or less free? It means I am enslaved by death. He twists words and definitions in a sophists manner.

Religious belief is childish and blatantly false, so you want us to believe in it, for false comfort?

nahh...Death came into the world thru Sin!,,,,according to Holy Bible.
Suicide is a sin. It is self-Murder...Murder of anyone including oneself,is a Sin.

+Just looking You have the right to that opinion, but it should not be imposed upon the rest of humanity in the form of laws which curtail the right to die. Also, I believe that the only reason that you are religious is because of your terror of death and of the meaninglessness and ephemerality of your existence. Instead, you delude yourself into believing that there is a grand plan for your mundane little existence and God is avidly watching every move that you make. Religion = the ultimate form of hubris.

+Just looking I'm sharing my opinion with you, not seeking to impose my world outlook by denying you the right to make decisions as you see fit. Denying other people the right to choose whether to end their life (amongst many other things) is exactly what religious zealots such as yourself have in mind, and therefore that is an egregious imposition upon the lives of those who do not share your delusions.
