She has always been critical of herself and how her teammates, the youth, and the others train. It is her style. Kobe would say the same thing because they were driven by something different. (but she isn't far off, it's a different-more lax approach.

Survivor bias. She got good because she took risks. Other people who took similar risks suffered but she managed to get through it therefore gaining popularity. Her message is the loudest because she survived when in reality we should still try to look at evidence based medicine as a basis for training regimes.
Very very well done Carli for your sacrifice and achievements, but many were not as fortunate as yourself. Please don't advocate that others take the risks you took to become a legend, let others find their own path for their own goals.

Choosing to spend time with your family, choosing bodily health & longevity, choosing mental health/happiness & not having the privilege to drop everything for what is initially a "hobby" is not "soft". High level athletes are definitely at the peak of hard work, but that does not mean "everyone else that doesn't get to this level" is soft. Simone Biles stepped down because of "the yips" due to a mental block. She is the the most-decorated female gymnast with seven Olympic medals, but is she "soft"? This toxic, privileged mindset puts athletes and ppl at risk of injury.

But if you look at athletes saying they are overplayed then they simply are. Currently there are so many ACL injuries in the women’s game it’s sad to see. I appreciate her sentiment; however, I think "being soft" is a symptom of our generation having more awareness of our mental and physical health and taking precautions to protect ourselves in an increasingly hostile world. Not all of us want to be the best at something. I just want to live a simple, happy life with people I love. She said it herself-she took some hits to her mental health on her journey to become the best. Not everyone is willing to do that and I don't think it's because we lack resilience, I think it's because we're more aware of the sacrifices that are required to be the best at something and aren't willing to make those sacrifices in a world like this. She's an icon and succeeded in chasing her dream. Good for her! But, I think the notion that our generation is "being soft" is a reductionist argument.

There's just an air of "bootstraps" mentality to her talk about the athletes of today. She happens to be talented. She happens to have not ended her career pushing herself so hard. And I get it, she likes feeling special and superior, and she doesn't want to feel like she pushed her body beyond the safe zone to not be remembered. But the idea that kids today are soft for wanting to make sure they can walk into their 80's without needing heavy (and expensive) medical intervention is just ridiculous. People with their whole lives ahead of them want to know that they get to enjoy those lives. They want to know that they won't have to live off of a single big prize, or even have nothing at all. It's not being soft, it's being sensible. Sure, sensible doesn't sound as romantic, but oddly enough romance doesn't provide any of the day to day necessities like food, water, shelter, or rest. Honestly, she should be excited that the youth of today won't have to make the sacrifices she made nor take the risks she took, instead of sounding like that old timer who won't shut up about how kids today have it too easy- as if that wasn't the point.

I think Carli makes a good point about how people are a lot more self reliant anything other than the intuitiveness of our own bodies but goddamn is saying people are "soft" such a bad take. A lot of people work there ass off and just don't see success, just because you hear about the MJ's or the Kobe's who worked there ass of and made it, it doesn't mean there are thousands of others that don't. And if you don't balance yourself, then you are fully reliant on 'making it' and you don't learn of other ways that you can contribute and learn, like watching games for example. If you don't make it you are literally destroying your body and mind, essentially for nothing. It's literally survivorship bias at it's finest.
Even just looking at the stats it's apparent that people are overworking; Lonzo ball is a perfect example of this, he will probably never play again and a major contributor to that was how much he trained when he was younger. Just like the increasing amount of injuries amongst younger players, obviously it's not all because of overworking but it plays a significant part.

Workaholic here whose really bad at prioritizing my mental health (thanks anxiety), but have learned through my current job how important vacations are and have made sure to take at least one every year since I was eligible because it allows me the opportunity to refresh myself and reset my brain which ultimately helps me with my sanity/mental health to keep working as hard as I can.
Because I haven’t yet taken a vacation this year (I’m thinking of taking mine in September like I did last year), I actually had to take a mental health day the other day and not go to work because my anxiety spiked through the roof and I wasn’t in a good place mentally or physically because I only got 30-45 minutes of sleep and it reminded me that I need to take my vacation sooner rather than later, if you don’t prioritize your mental health it will come back to bite you!

Ayee! Fellow retired NJ Olympic athlete here! I would disagree with the work harder than everyone else. I would instead say work harder than 95% of everyone else and have a better mindset than anyone else. When you get to the top 5% your mindset will sort out the rest. What I mean by that is never think "I lost because he cheated" or "I lost because I wasn't feeling it today", instead think "I lost because I wasn't good enough" then take apart the situation piece by piece and analyze what you can improve on. If you are in the top 5% and you have a bad day, then you'd still destroy someone in the bottom 5%, if you want to be the best then you need to be able to beat the person who's second best even on a bad day. That is the mindset that will drive you to the top.
The second thing I would say is don't listen to others if your goal is to be the best, especially if they themselves aren't the best. If someone tells you you're wrong, try it anyway. Maybe you'll actually be wrong, but then you'll have the experience to tell you why and that may inspire you to try something that does work for you. I had 2 coaches, both Olympic gold medalists, the only thing they ever did was teach me the fundamentals, answer my questions, and warn me if I was going to injure myself. Everything else was left up to me to figure out and create a style that worked for me.
So if your goal is the top, there's 3 steps. 1. Take full responsibility 2. Analyze what you can improve even if you won 3. Be creative and think out of the box

I understand where you are coming from and I do agree with you. However, this generation is focusing more on creating a balance. They are trying to not take their work too seriously. People are trying to enjoy what they do. Your work shouldn't define your self-worth. It shouldn't be the only thing that defines you. Being sincere about your work is different than being consumed by it for most of your life until you retire. There was a study published in positive psychology which concluded that people who are younger tend to chase power, accomplishment, and fame but as they get older they start regretting their choices and wish that they could've tried to enjoy every aspect of their lives instead of chasing fame. She did all of it because she wanted to but that doesn't necessarily mean it was right for her or that it should be the standard. She is being very honest about how she had to struggle so much to reach such great heights but I can give you example of great pioneers in sports who maintained a strong work-life balance and still managed to become the greatest. I am not sure if you have heard of Virat Kohli but he is one of the best cricket players in the world. People said nasty things to him when he decided to not play a match because he had to be there for his wife who was giving birth at the time. People called him a lot of things synonymous to being soft and stuff but people who have a little bit of Empathy and sense understood that he is more than just a sportsperson. He is a human being with a personal life. I admire that man for being there for his partner when she genuinely needed him. In Carli's dictionary, that guy would be called soft and that is what I find to be a very toxic mindset. Just because you are famous doesn't mean you can't be stupid sometimes.

    • @sardalamit
      @sardalamit ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@varnikapachauri4197 Carli did mention the distinction b/w the two. I guess it was around discussing youth football...discussing when the blinders need to go on vs let them be kids.
Virat Kohli - did not know that 1 incident about him. My 2 cents on it- if he had accumulated his leaves (or whatever system pro athletes have) it's upto him to play or to be with his wife.
I have work and hobbies too. However it's my work that defines me. Since you mentioned the difference b/w generations- that's one big problem I have to deal with when managing my teams. Youngsters not putting in the hours and then complaining about the paycheck...and mid typing I just realized we might be going off topic. Anything I say here without context is just going to sound too much Scrooge McDuck.

This is a very well written response and on point. Also, people being "soft" isn't exactly a generational thing as far as I've been seeing. Irrespective of their ages, there are people who are "soft" and a minor inconvenience can quickly break them down. One must agree that it certainly becomes a problem when their minor inconveniences are projected as "tough battles/struggles of life". Our very own Ms. Ananya Pandey is a great example.

Once you choose to make it your career instead of playing for fun, you need to take your training to a whole new level, because there are so many other people on the sidelines ready to replace you if you don't. Players are playing 3 games a week for extended amounts of time which is leading to more Players being at risk for injury. So, Carli’s arguments are definitely fair at some points. I think where she falls short, and you saw it when she was on special forces, is neglecting the holistic approach to performance. She relied so heavily on the “just tough it out” mentally and didn’t always take advantage of other mental elements of the game. Even still, she’s one of the best to ever do it but she neglected a concept of balance which is what she said. I think the pendulum has swung too far the other way where we’re too concerned with “supporting” or coddling athletes and not really stretching. To be a high performer, you have to have a balance between high stretch and high support

Maybe people got softer. maybe they didn't.
However it is very difficult to compare your own life journey and your efforts to someone that maybe has the same talent but can't dedicate the majority of their week to training and sports or who doesn't have the same access to training in their home country, or doesn't have the regular access to to food and water.
People want to say that they and their hard work did it all alone, but there's more variables than just hard work...yes there's also talent how much you want it, but I am talking about resources.
that doesn't mean she didn't work hard for it, but she still had a bit of luck for being born in a family that didn't marry her off at 9 years old or that she had to train while having a handful of kids to care for.
and you have to be willing and able to make sacrifices. I am not talking about just in training, but not being able to contribute socially in the way others can or relying on others to maintain your relationships, sacrificing opportunities in education or work because they will limit your ability to train.
It's a mix of hard work, passion, talent and opportunity.

Science and our understanding of physiology has grown tremendously since Carli Lloyd’s time, however everyone’s physical/biological make up is unique and is heavily influenced by one’s lived experiences. For some athletes overtraining might have paid off well, while for others it’s led to early abrupt ends in their careers. 28:07 Absolutely, I went to practice and my teammates wouldn't go hard in practice. I tried to push them but they didn't want it, they didn't want to get tired or hurt. I hated it. Practice like you play.

As a coach, I have seen players like you time and time again. I commend you for showing up and taking practice seriously because not everyone does and the coaches do notice the ones that are there to actually get better and the ones that just show up because they have to.

@@kategrossi8717 "because they have to" should indicate that those players are not trying to reach pro level goals and should also not be pushed into that mentality. Kudos to the people that deeply care, but if it's anything other than college level athletics, you're going to have plenty of players that don't care as much.

@@TheSwauzz whether kids are trying to go pro or not(the likelihood of anyone becoming pro is so small).. I still feel as though my kids should be putting in the effort to be there. I stand by that for anything in life, why go to college to just get by? Why go to work to just get a paycheck.. in my opinion, if you're doing anything in life, you should always be putting forth effort to be the best you can be.

I completely disagree. I’ve had teammates that basically do nothing in training but kill in actually comp games.
