There's a suggestion that there is some vampiric activity in the Greene mansion. The maid seems to spy something on the POV character's neck whilst she is fitting the outfit (a bite perhaps?) and seems shocked and disturbed by it.
Later: Nope, I'm wrong. It's probably Agent Sleepwalker's sleep valve, which is positioned somewhere on the neck. The maid, as a Victorian lady, would perhaps be disturbed by this alien-looking technology
