also, I think most people who slap just think that the root-octave are the only slap notes available.

It took me more then a half year to see some improvement on my slap bass. First thing I tried to learn was rhcp's get up and jump. goddamn it was too hard. Then I changed my hand position, realised that flea has a very different style and there are plenty of better players :D and after 1 year I learned marcus miller's power :D So, don't give up man, keep practicing at least 30 min p/day and the day will come :3

Seen თეზი The teacher I had as a teen was very good and he helped me a lot with technique, but I wasn't feeling it. I stopped playing altogether for a long time (I'm 32 now) because I was frustrated with myself, and took it back up like a year ago. I don't get frustrated anymore except when I play slap. Maybe I'll try again sometime, but right now everything it does is making me want to toss the bloody bass away and I don't have a lot of time to practise, so I'm focusing on other things.
Thanks for the advice though! :)

agreed. its incredible how tasteful minimal slapping and popping can be, and there are so few instances in which one needs to go "Victor Wooten mode". Kind of like guitar players who only know how to shred but cant play rhythm, but I digress

As a bass player for the last 20 years, primarily in the US, now live in the UK, this guy is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT correct in SO SO SO many of his comments. Its actually HARDER to play SLOW with feel than fast. I stumbled onto this video inadvertently but Scott, you are absolutely correct. Watch this cat, he GETS it! I am also someone who used to only slap in E (actually its usually harmonic Em, but I am nitpicking :). Slow and steady win the groove! WELL DONE Scott, whoever the hell you are. But you UNDERSTAND the fundamentals of good percussive bass! Bravo!

Simpson Coc use your left hand to mute the other strings

    • @vincentkoster6291
      @vincentkoster6291 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Simpson Coc keep practicing and don't give up! also to keep your thumb parallel to the strings, keep in mind that your lower arm has to 'almost' touche the bridge. that way it's easier to slap with a parallel thumb instead of slapping pointing down (like flea). it takes some getting used to but don't give up practicing!

    • @chains7844
      @chains7844 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

i have the exact same problem but its now under control (just a little bit) just keep on practicing :)

    • @MidlifeRenaissanceMan
      @MidlifeRenaissanceMan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Mostly left hand muting, but I also use my right hand to mute the E string when I'm slapping the A string. I've been playing for so long, I had to stop and think about it.
Just keep practicing clean and build up your speed that way. You can also go fast and messy, then bring the tempo down to find where you clean up your playing.
I'm doing that to get my dexterity up in a guitar at the moment. I'm much more coordinated playing fast runs on a bass than on a guitar.
Bring the speed up until you fall apart, then start where you can't play clean and slow the pace down. Minimum 10 minutes twice a day

    • @tomschang2225
      @tomschang2225 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Simpson Coc
My ways of minimizing hitting those other strings is to:
      a) slap on the neck (literally my thumb hits the string above the edge of the neck of the guitar)
      b) rest stroke as much as you can. This means slapping through the string you intend to hit and resting your thumb on the next string down
If you do that right you should rarely get any other strings resonating than the one you want. That odd time out you can fret hand mute to deal with it.

Thank you! I literally groaned out load when he said B to Db. And it's gotta be B to C#, since it's a minor key. I mean, sure, technically Db Minor exists, but no one on earth ever plays in it (since its relative major is Fb Major; gimme a break). Gotta be C# Minor, so gotta be B to C#.

The thoughts of this clip are noted but the real (hidden) value of this clip is the sample you used Scott. The artist Ndegeocello has a number of very fine songs out there (and she is the bass player as well as lead vocal). The more I sample her music, the richer it becomes. Try her song called 'Make Me Wanna Holler', written for her, by Marvin Gaye. He performed a song by the same sub-name years ago - 'Inner City Blues'. The lyrics he wrote first time portray the same struggle as her version but with very different situation the 2nd time. -- as always, enjoying your way of explaining da bass.

#1 thumb angle: rather than a mistake, I believe it is the hardest part to develop properly, mainly in terms of accuracy.
#2 overplaying: too much ghost notes can hurt, seriously :-) So we should remember to slap 33%, pluck 33%, and rest 33% of the slapping time

  • @thescatman5029
    @thescatman5029 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1. Many of the classic funk joints, particularly those from the 70s, are in E. (due to the fact that most bassists were 4-stringers, back then!). That may be the reasons why a lot of folk subsequently slapped in that key! Now, a good practice that goes off of that "E groove" would be two Louis Johnson joints in G minor: "Stomp" and "Get On The Floor!"
    2. "Machine Gun slapping," IMO, came from the Victor Wooten/Bill Dickens/Jaco-speed generation! (Jaco didn't slap, but bassists did adopt his 'speed'!). Everyone wanted to be those cats mentioned....! Some nice "slow slap" tunes would be Sly's "Thank You For Talking To Me Africa", Parliament's "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and Maxwell's "Somethin' Somethin'"....!

  • @BassByTheBay
    @BassByTheBay 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Scott's great, but it's a bit silly to qualify playing in E and playing fast (which is relative) as "mistakes". I'm pretty sure no one thinks it's a mistake when Marcus Miller does one of his E thump-fests, and nothing is wrong with playing fast if it sounds good.
Kinda disappointing to hear him misrepresent perfectly valid musical choices.

I have some words of encouragemenr in the midst of whats going on.
It might sound wierd, but it is for real. Its long because I've tried to and any faqs! Hopefully this will answer some of those nagging questions -
Why does evil exist (and how can it be fixed), how is the whole "Jesus dying" thing really relevant to anything? To you? if you still have any questions let me know x
First, what is evil? Well, the Bible calls it the breaking of God's laws - and God intends for this world to be perfect in every way.
He also wants us to have perfect lives too - thats a part of His plan. But we dont though, do we?
Every one of us have lied, stolen (even tiny things count as stealing), spoken badly to our parents and had embarrassing and detestable thoughts in our thought life. The Bible calls this "sin", the breaking of God's laws. You might think, so what? Everyone lies and thinks bad things about others! Its human!
You're right. That's exactly what the Bible says, we're "born into sin" and that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" - Romans 3:23
    Notice something?
God's intent for us APPEARS to be the exact OPPOSITE of human nature and desires!
Not lying, not stealing, and having a perfect thought life is God's standard for us, so if it is God's standard, and we were made in "God's image", Why don't we meet it then?
Well, Remember Adam and Eve and when they sinned. Before sin they were perfect in thought word and DEED completely, just as God intended, and they had a perfect relationship with Him. ALL was perfect in every way.
But after the first sin occured due to Satan's tempting in the Garden, it destroyed that part of us that was morally perfect and in perfect harmony with God - His morals, standard, and love. Satan took over these things and so while we kept certain things, the ability to be thinking individuals with unique personalities, the moral part (affecting how our thoughts, actions and personalities operate) was damaged. To the point where we are "opposed" to God, hence His nature and standards being the opposite of what we see as reasonable or possible. The bible says "apart from God we can do nothing". Without Him, it will 100% feel "opposite", unreasonable and alien to us. Only WITH Him can we gain victory in these things.
Why doesn't God just let sin off and leave it?
The Bible describes God as a "righteous judge", many wonder why God doesn't just let sin off and leave it, but He can't. Why? That's like a if a judge let off a
murderer who broke the state law. Everyone would attack that judge and call Him corrupt, saying that he had not done right and should be fired for failing to punish the murderer for his evil. AND to completely love and be good as God is, means you need to, in turn, hate all forms of evil. You can't truly love good unless you hate the existence of evil.
This means that God needed, as a righteous judge to punish sin with the ultimate penalty of death - expressing His hatred of evil - and separation from His presence forever. Hence Hell.
"The soul that sins shall die (in Hell and suffer damnation)" - Ezekiel 18:20
BUT God, who is also perfect love, did not want to see His creation tortured and cut off from Him. He cares so much for is that He couldn't bear to see us fall into Satans hands and suffer death, even though we broke the law and deserve to be cut off from perfection forever
Because of justice, God could not leave sin and evil unpunished, BUT because of LOVE, God provided someone else to take that punishment on our behalf, satisfying both justice (by punishing the evil committed), and love (by sparing OUR lives) despite our sin.
God sent His own SON - think about that. His *Son*, the one whom He loved infinitely (the same way He loves us).
God allowed Him to take the pain we deserved, He took ALL of Gods wrath for every single sin you and I have committed. He was punished brutally and completely so that we do not have to be punished.
Back in the courtroom scenario: He paid the "fine" at His own expense (His life had to be morally perfect on this Earth, then He had to be killed as a sinless sacrifice on our behalf).
So when He returns to remove all evil from the face of the Earth, we can be spared and free because Christ has already BEEN punished on our behalf. He then rose again on the third day, conquering not only life and sin and temptation, but DEATH.
    GOD HAS POWER OVER DEATH.
"I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live (immortally and eternally in Heaven when I return)" - John 11:25,26
ALL we have to do is accept it by faith. Faith alone in Christ alone.
Religion = rules to be saved
The gospel = Christ saved us already we just have to believe it by faith. If you lack faith (as I did before), pray. He will make it strong it time. Trust Him as you would trust those close to you. He knows you even better than that. He created you and knows you inside out.
    ...WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
What does it actually mean for us?
It means we can be free from the penalty of damnation.
Not only that but we can be restored to Him and recreated into His moral image AGAIN as long as we accept Jesus having paid the price for us and accept Him as our Lord, the one who is in the front seat of our lives. He has a plan for your life, He's created you for a purpose. Just remember that. A purpose that includes being recreated into His image, one you can only accomplish through Him and reliance on His power and by following HIS way of life.
What does this new way of life entail?
It entails love, true love and service and aid to others, to "love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength" and "love your neighbour as you love yourself" Matthew 22:37, 39.
Sharing the message of Christ's death, resurrection and soon return on this Earth to give justice OR mercy depending on what the person chose.
    Sound "opposite" again?
God knows it sounds opposite, which is why, as The Bible states, this is NOT something we can do alone. It's not in our nature.
We need a new nature in the front seat, and the first step is to repent (turn from and reject our sin, pursuing the opposite direction and drawing close to God)
Christ will give us an actual DESIRE to do these things. Through the Holy Spirit, sent by Him to us after the ascension. He speaks to us through thoughts of love and truth and conviction, verses, ideas, prayers and He guides us so that we gain a desire to follow God and be able to do these "opposite" things through Him.
"With man it is impossible, but with God, NOTHING is impossible!" - Matthew 19:26
What is the way FOR though?
Firstly its to save you from sin - the only way to gain victory over sin and not have it as your master is through having Christ as your master and following His aid to resist the devil's temptations.
Christ lived down here for 33 years suffering EVERY FORM of temptation that you have ever faced - "who in every respect [has] been tempted as we are, yet without sin" Hebrews 4:15.
Therefore He is able to help us through our struggles. When the devil knows people have left his camp, he always tries harder with more temptations and evil attacks. BUT - His way is also there to guard and teach you daily in the midst of this (and despite this) sinful, selfish world.
The path He wants you to walk is a path of committment and love - its not about rules and regulations to save us - what Christ did GAVE us salvation.
    All we need is faith.
The rest, the "fruits of good works (the will to obey and follow Him)", are what come through true, maturing faith. It's all about faith and the relationship God wants with you just like before sin arrived.
God preferred His own Son to be tortured And *killed* to give a chance to us (who broke His law of perfection) so that we can live as His children again. He wants us to love and trust and worship Him.
What if I still find myself sinning after I have accepted Christ?
That's why Christ died, For our sin. His death doesn't fix us in a snap like that, but it does protect us from the damnation that our past, present and future sins would bring without Jesus.
It's a process - a lifelong process - of God bringing you back to Him, away from the destructive pleasures of sin (greed, selfish temptations, trampling on people to gain). This process takes a *lifetime*, as it does for all, but NEVER give up, when you fall, know Christ paid for that sin you committed already - just acknowledge your sin and ask for forgiveness - and you can get back up again because He already bore your guilt and shame.
Regardless of the darkness you are in or the extent or frequency of the sins you have committed or will commit, regardless of how doubtful you may feel, know that Jesus UNDERSTANDS completely and He is faithful.
"those who come to Me, I will by no means cast out" - John 6:37
    ...HOW DO I LEARN MORE?
    Don't know where to start?
Note down the Gospel of "John", or "Luke" (for a more detailed account of it all).
Remember that He will "NEVER - and that means never - leave you, NOR forsake you" - Deuteronomy 31:6
You can go to Him with them and be assured that He loves you and is for you.
Keep your heart open to Him and remember that if we pray for Christ to enter our lives, He will.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only begotten Son, that whomever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life". -
Thanks for reading if you did. I just felt that I should tell you regardless. Let me know if
you have any more questions or if you need any clarification on anything xx

Hey Scott, I was wondering. What do you think of Reggae as a production boom.
I´m asking you this question, because you never talk about production (or at least from what i´ve seen, and you neither speak about teaching bass. Do yu think that Scotts Bass lessos could expand from these "subjects"...or worlds...

As a guy who sucks royally at even basic slap techniques, I think this is the very first riff I've seen in a teaching setting that both uses an effective-yet-easy interplay of basics and actually sounds stinkin' fonky. Like, in most slap exercises, I sound like a massive go-kart pileup in progress, but playing this makes me feel like a soul-funk beast. Me'Shell is a perfect example of being good enough to know how & when to scale back and give just the right amount, and this is a great presentation of how to develop that thinking. Thank you!!
Anyway, got a basic question: on your D-string pops, they're SUPER short & snappy. Is that done by lifting the fretting finger up right after the pop happens? Maybe part of my problem is being wimpy, because I only get a really pleasing short pop like that when I pop THE LIVING HELL out of the string. Even then, it seems like quite the workout to lift the fretting finger quickly enough to get the gunshot-quick ending. Just need to tighten up my technique?

Thanks for another good lesson Scott. In the 70's everything 'slappy' seemed to be in E. Shakey Ground, Play that funky music etc. More recently I've got away from EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, learning songs like 'I Like It, by De Barge. Not too tricky but sounds interesting.

Nice groove, and a great help to learn how to slap, I noticed that in this video Scott talks about the consistent slap motion in the right hand but in other videos he talks about doing a thumb-slap-thumb pluck, which isn't consistent with that, I can feel that I'm missing something in there but I can't tell what.
Also, I come from a relatively advanced theory background, and it sounds to me like the Db minor pentatonic fits really well in this key without any void notes. With that in mind, the Db minor pentatonic is actually the exact same thing as the E major pentatonic it just starts on the sixth
    Db-minor pent
    Db-Fb-Gb-Ab-Cb-Db
    E-maj pent
    E-F#-G#-B-C#-E
(Due to enharmonics, Db=C# just as Ab=G# so the notes are all the same)
So this song actually is (well, sort of) in the key of E. Though there are complications if using the actual ionian mode in E (the traditional major scale)

Hey Scott, just started listening to your channel. Just curious what type of music you enjoy most. I was really into metal and rock, but really like blues and jazz. From watching some of your videos I'm assuming you're a jazz fan. What bassist do you admire from these different music styles (rock, jazz, blues). Also I really love the feel of bass in old big band jazz.

Hi all. Thanks a lot for the riff Scott (and the song, which I didn't know at all!).
A technical question: I personally find it easier to move the right hand only when I play the high C (unlike you. You move the left hand earlier, when you play the high Bb). Any thoughts about that? Anybody? Thank you.

Great vid and a wicked groove. Being a bit pedantic, that groove is C# minor not Db minor. C# is the relative minor of E major, i.e. four sharps. Db minor would be the relative of Fb, and that would be vile to read - Db, Eb, Fb, Gb,Ab, Bbb, Cb.

I wouldn't have picked either of those.... my (and many others, from my observation) biggest problem is simply over playing... Slapping just brings it out of me, and it's a constant struggle to only give the tune what it needs and not throw in "clever" fills everywhere...

This song has a really nice groove/flow to it, but the Jesus lyrics really get annoying after a while. A lot of soul inspired gospel sounds great at first but then gets old really fast after I hear "Jesus, Lord, Prayer, Mary, God, Heaven, blah blah blah" 50 times all before the first chorus.Anyways, great video and lesson! Thanks for the tips!

  • @tomlewis4748

I notice that you are adding a little muted slap directy after the 2nd D flat. I understand this is a percussive technique that adds to the actual riff, although it is not really a part of it. Also, you make little 'downbeat' clicks on the bass, also which are in this percussive category (and of course this will continue through an amp). These are common touches for a bass player, that I expect (I do it all the time, too), and they help you keep the rhythm. I would only not do them if they were being duplicated by a percussionist in the band/studio, such as a conga player.
Also, were you aware of the swing here in this song? At ~90 BPM, all even 16th notes are delayed about 7 ms off the grid. I think you also played it with this groove naturally. But did you do that consciously? (sure is a great track, huh?)

  • @pizzicato16
    @pizzicato16 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Scott. I love you. You are easily the best bass educator on the internet, that's why love watching you. But the music theory nerd in me is cringing when you call the key Db minor, and when you say "B to Db". Enharmonically that is incorrect. Db minor is a theoretical key (no one wants to think about B double flat). But C# minor is E major, which we all know and love.
Also, much respect on using some Me'shell. She is one of the best out there as far as feel and I don't think she gets the respect she deserves.
Thanks for all you do, and I hope it's okay I hit you with some supernerdiness!

    hello!
i have a question! but i am not english so my language could be a bit difficult.
my question is: which amp brands are realy clear or natural and dont change the sound ???
i heared about "glockenklang" that they are good if i want 100% of my original clear bass sound like 1:1 it is.
and i heared that some amps or amp-brands are changing the sound of the base a little bit and giving it an "akzent"...
i am looking for an amp which is 1 on 1 the original sound and i just
heared about "glockenklang" that they are the best in it but i want to
have a choice... maybe you can help me with this problem. i want an amp
which gives me 1on1 sound so that i can start forming my own style of
sound with a neutral base and than i can add some EQ-modeling or
    effect-pedals or what ever.
how can i find this kind of amp ??
which speakers and which electronix are the "best" for this???
    thank you!

Don't like speed for speeds sake in bass or guitar - except if it is Ida Nielsen who I like watching and also like watching her play the bass. I'm completely new to slap bass overall. Would you say that a lot of the time you are slapping on the low note & then plucking the higher octave of that same note? The whole "structure" of slap bass has always just confused me. I've mainly been a rock/punk bassist playing with a pick my whole life, but recently began working to make myself a better finger style & slap player since I am playing more covers now that are all completely different.

The most common mistake I see: thumb slapping angle when it's more of a vertical angle. They're severely limiting their skills and by making their thumb more horizontal and striking through the string rather than on it will ultimately sound cleaner & opens up more opportunities for things like double thumb (Wooten style).

Hi Scott. I've got a question re the position of the thumb. Up or down. There seems to be two types of people. Those that slap with the thumb up (as in Louis Johnson) and those that slap with the thumb down... er... everyone else. I admit I'm a bit of a thumb upper. I've tried the thumb down and my shoulder suddenly raises up. Does it matter which way the thumb goes?
