Wale's ability to fuse spoken word, solid lyricism, conscious, reflective rap, brilliant word-play, go-go, R&B and jazz is absolutely effortless. It's extremely wild that this man isn't more widely celebrated. He's definitely in the upper echelon of hiphop! This entire set was VIBESSS and Tre's voice is absolutely beautiful!
Always enjoyed Wale, but this is the perfect setting for his music. He's always had an "old jazz man" aesthetic to his music which is extremely rare now especially. That's what always made him so unique to me. He's easily one of the best artist that blew up in the 2010s. This was a delight. He is coma style slept on and it's sad, but I do genuinely feel like his music is going to around for decades to come, because it is timeless. The newest album is legit!
This is exactly how his music needs to be experienced. Sooo dope. He’s like a glass of whiskey, smooth and ages with time. Not for everyone but for us with refined palettes. He’s dope. So underrated. Ps- the singer sounds like a man-baby. Interesting voice. In a good way... I guess? Yes? No? It works. God bless him
I was in the room when this was filmed. This was one of the few shows that NPR sold tickets to, but the musician wasn't announced until you were there so it was a total surprise. Fun fact -- it was supposed to be someone else who canceled at the last minute so Wale was called in to play. I'm guessing he was going to do one anyway as they seemed quite ready for it (at least his band did, per his own comments), but he was in fact a last minute substitution. A handful of comments about all the 'white people' in the room and I'll confirm that's true. When they announced Wale it was like ~20% of the people in the room knew who he was at all, which I thought was hilarious. I knew Wale a bit, not a ton, but UCB was legendary so when I realized those guys were the band I was beyond stoked. Wale is a great performer but as you can tell here he didn't really feel the crowd, because most of them are the typical wealthy DC transplant who just thought it would be fun and expected it to be Taylor Swift or something like that. I also think he was out of his comfort zone a bit as the Tiny Desk setup is REALLY quiet. It has a good full sound but when you're there, and I was near the front, you can honestly hardly hear it so it's super impressive these guys can play so confidently given the volume. Just my two cents. Wale is great, this live vibe is way different than most of his albums, but getting a live rendition of CC White and Sexy Lady was priceless.
@@Poshgirl99 They did it only once in the Fall of 2019. In the era of covid I doubt it happens again any time soon as we were all pushed up next to each other, super close in. Outside of the few shows where they sold tickets (it was called "Tiny Desk Fest" if you wanna look it up), the crowd is normally just NPR employees and friends of the artist who may be around.

That CC White broke my heart. I'm a D.C. area native like Wale and yeah - that white powder put a hurt on our city. That reference to Len Bias and gentrification at the end hit me square in my heart. I don't know if I'll ever return to D.C. - I know the houses I was raised in are well above my paygrade and always will be - but that song reminded me how much I love that city and how much it breaks my heart.
