PISMO CLAMS, How To Harvest & Purge Your Clams To Cook Them
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 ม.ค. 2024
- A valid fishing license is required. You must have an accurate clam caliper on your person while clamming. The clams must measure at least 4.5" to keep. You must keep all your clams on your person at all times. Keep your clams separate from other members of your party. Please re-bury all under-sized clams to help them successfully make more baby clams.
Please release all undersized clams to ensure we will always have plenty of keeper clams on the beach at all times in the future. It’s up to us to keep this fishery sustainable by respecting the minimum clam size and to re-bury the shorts to ensure survival.
Thank you!
Minimum Size: 4.5”

Great video! I’ve been clamming Pismo for a lot of years. Glad to see them returning. I use a tenderizing mallet to soften the foot which tenderizes it making it a lot less chewy.
Great video! Try a bucket of ocean water to purge them in. Sit overnight. Perfectly clean and alive the next day. Cheers!
I'm glad to see Pismo clams are still around. We would go out to the oil piers in the late 60s by just using our feet to dig for clams , just north of Hobson Beach Campground to get Pismo clams & bring to my Auntie Toots & she would make clam chowder for dinner when we camped at Hobsons
Wow that is such a cool story. You ought to share that on a podcast sometime. These stories are so cool. Everyone has their own stories.
All the way down in Ventura huh? It would be rad to see them really populate all along the coast line. We just gotta leave the shorts alone and let nature do her thing.
Looks like fun. Using a poop fork to find clams…. Sounds legit 😂🤘🏼
Dude those look amazing 🙌🏼 Definitely going to try that ASAP 😋yum 👍🏽
This is great. Any chance you can make a vid on harvesting mussels from shore (time of year, what to avoid, and so on) and then the prep for eating?
You got it!!! Thanks for asking! This is a good time of year, mid winter, the colder the better. They grow where the waves smash into the reef/rocks, so out on the ends of points, or north side of the point where it’s still rocky. North facing rocky beaches. Need clam waves and/or low tide to get them safely.
I love some mussels in a spaghetti sauce. For sure I have this on the agenda along with trying to snare some crabs so that’ll be coming up soon as I can find a day with small waves and low tide 👍 thank you for this request
You're tough and fearless! I a wetsuit and anchor next??
I do think a wetsuit would be a good move. And maybe some arm floaties.
I’m hoping to see a home made clam chowder catch and cook…
For my NorCal brothers, put it inside a sourdough bread bowl 🍻
Finished watching and your recipe looks 🔥
Legit! OK... Challenge accepted.
@@VINCEGOESFISHINGi just finished watching and your recipe is on my to do list for real 🍻
That is exactly the type of fork my dad used 40 years ago. He used to walk parallel to shore. Clams normally orient themselves perpendicular to shore.
What do you mean "Clams normally orient themselves perpendicular to shore." Can you clarify that?
Surf clams usually point one end towards the dunes and the other end towards the open water, that orientation is 90 degrees perpendicular to the surf line aka beach - hope that helps.
@@michaelhamerski2168 Ohhhhh I seee... So, bury the clam as though it's "talking to the dunes". Thanks for sharing this tip.
Yup, that's why you walk parallel to the shore while poking your fork into the sand. You could use a 4 prong fork 16" wide and not miss any legal clams and cover more distance faster.
@@michaelhamerski2168 Great info man! This will help a lot of people be successful and also help conserve our clam fishery! Thank you so much!
Hi Vince! Love you channel man. Recently moved to Socal. What do you suggest for the tide level for keeper pismo clams?
Any minus tide. The lower the better.
Was this an incoming tide that you dug?
So what beach was that?
Where can I buy those perch pouches in person?
BeenThereCaughtThat in Santa Maria. Call ahead to make sure they are in stock. Or contact @Hook2Cook maybe he can sell them to you directly.
