  • The Zen Center of NYC / Fire Lotus Temple, is the city branch of Zen Mountain Monastery. It was founded in Manhattan in the mid-90s, and moved to its current location in downtown Brooklyn in June of 2000. This film was made in 2015 to celebrate 15 years at 500 State Street.
In addition to regular workshops, meditation retreats and daily zazen, the Temple has a residency program for those wishing to practice and train in a communal environment while working or studying in the city. Many get their first experience of the Zen Center through the popular Sunday morning which features beginning instruction in Zen meditation, a talk by one of the teachers or senior students, and an opportunity to get to know some of the people who practice regularly at the Temple.

6:50 .. I just want to thank you Yukon.. I’m new to all of Zen and can’t describe how much I appreciate your lessons.. there’s a not so sober past I have and I listen to your talks and learn a little bit about you and feel like “here is someone that has felt those experiences and affects” and to here your wisdom I am grateful.. I digress 🙏🏼

Lovely video, thanks for sharing, gassho. After 11 years without new videos from MRO, it's great to see new content as you continue to evolve your practice and participation. Hopefully the first of many!

It looks more like a Christian church than a monastery..

The Zen Center of NYC was in fact a church in the 1980s and 1990s. Then the building was purchased and renovated in 2000 by the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism after the church relocated elsewhere.
Zen Mountain Monastery was designed in the late 1920s to be a Catholic retreat center though that quickly shifted into being a Christian summer camp for many years. So, you're on to something!
